    3. Forgot to mention if you're a local, you may want to check deeds in the County Clerk's Office. For example for my town of Alabama (Genesee County) I found some very interesting things on our St. Patricks Church. (which I'll eventually get posted to my websites new home.) In 1877, Rev. Stephen V. Ryan, Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, purchased lots in the towns of Genesee County. The deed at Liber 151 page 38 is the lot in the town of Alabama for St. Patrick's. Martin W. Donnell quitclaimed the land for $1.00. On January 4, 1898 Bishop James E. Quigley of Buffalo sold the plots Ryan purchased in the towns of Alabama, Byron, and Pavilion for $1.00 to The Diocese of Buffalo. There are several deeds such as this in the clerk's office in Genesee showing the Catholic Church's desire to expand its faith. So you may find the same thing in Wyoming County. Just a thought of another place to look. -- Cindy Amrhein Town of Alabama Historian in Genesee Co., NY Experience the Town of Alabama in Genesee County, NY. http://www.rootsweb.com/nycalaba/ APHNYS (Association of Public Historians of New York State) http://www.tier.net/~aphnys __________________________________________________________________ Try AOL and get 1045 hours FREE for 45 days! http://free.aol.com/tryaolfree/index.adp?375380 Get AOL Instant Messenger 5.1 for FREE! 3. The web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyerie/buffalo/rcparish.htm has info on a few Buffalo parishes. I would like to get whatever might have been written about the Wyoming County parishes. However, the owner of the page (Holly Timm, [email protected]) has not answered email, and the Erie County Rootsweb page says that it does not have an owner. The address for the "NYGenWeb State Coordinator, [email protected]", is not even a valid email address. (So many layers- "NYGenWeb", "USGenWeb" - it is so confusing.) If anyone can help with this, please let me know.

    3. Hello. I second this notion. I just spent 5 years tracing my maternal grandmother's lineage starting with her obituary in 1956. That article was all about her husband and nothing about HER. That inspired me to do a thorough search of her life and I didn't find out too much about her. Sad. 3. ****************** Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State July 24-1868 * * Attica. Attica continues to go ahead; the building and improvement mania is yet raging and bids fair to hold out during the season. The American Hotel is undergoing thorough repairs and is to be made to look like new, outside and in, while the barn is being enlarged and will be made much more commodious. With J.C. BUMP, Esq. to look after and attend to the wants of the traveling public the American as certainly become a first-class house. FAY & Son have got on a full "head of steam": and are prepared to do all kinds of turning in wood, brass, or iron. They are putting in a new plainer, jointer, saws, &c &c., which will make theirs a complete shop for all kinds of wood and iron work. We are glad to welcome to Attica, M.K. TRIPP, a Photographist, of superior skill. Mr. TRIPP has had years of experience in Cincinnati Ohio, and Rochester N.Y., and has opened a gallery here, where he is prepared to take pictures of all kinds and sizes. If you want a good barrel of apples go to PEMBER's barrel factory, for-well, PEMBER is bound to furnish the barrels, good ones too, for all that come, but not the apples. Willis PARKER, an employee on the R.R. between here and Hornelsville, got one of his thumbs badly mashed by the cars one day last week. It will be quite likely to make him "loaf" sometime, a thing Willis is not use to. We have not had a frost in Attica in three weeks or more, and unless the thermometer takes some pretty short turns we shall not look for one much just yet. J.G. DORANCE's Arctic Soda Fountain keeps things tolerably cool, though. * * The Warsaw 'New Yorker' and the Perry 'Sun' are "phighting" about Silver Lake.-The 'Sun' heats up awful because the 'New Yorker' alluded to the pond as a Warsaw attraction; and the 'New Yorker', on after consideration, don't think the puddle of any great account anyway. Pshaw, neighbors, don't contend over so small a matter. *********************************************

Trish Hackett Nicola Seattle, WA Reprinted with permission from the author of Remember When..., p. 8, Arcade Herald, March 20, 2003, copied by Trish Hackett Nicola (*See below for information on how to receive a copy of the original article or obituary.) 10 Years Ago - March 18, 1993 The worst winter storm in several years shut down the area for most of a weekend. Snowfall ranged from several inches to over two feet, but the high winds made it impossible for plows to keep some roads open. Kevin and Karen SCHAMBACH were preparing for a grand opening at their new maple syrup supply business on Route 39 in Sardinia. Deaths: Kenneth KOCH, 65, of Farmersville; Kathryn LATSON LEWIS, 90, formerly of Arcade. 25 Years Ago - March 22, 1978 The Pioneer girls' basketball team lost to Niagara-Wheatfield, 56-51, in the Class A sectional semi-finals. Nancy GETHICKER led the team with 31 points. Pioneer, coached by Buzz CHADDOCK, finished with an 18-2 record for the season. Ruth KENYON was elected president of the Chaffee-Sardinia Firemen's Auxiliary. Hazel ROBINSON LOCKE, a native of McKinstry, died at age 81. 35 Years Ago - March 21, 1968 The Delevan-Machias basketball team, coached by Buzz CHADDOCK, won its second straight Section VI Class C title by crushing Mayville, 109-63. High scorers were Stan JANAS, John KRIST, Jack LISENBY and Mike DUGAN. Arcade's basketball team lost to Penn Yan, 61-58, in the Section V Class B semi-final game. The defeat ended a 31-game win streak, over two seasons for Coach Tom POPE's defending sectional champions. Robert BLACKMAN was elected commander of the American Legion post in Holland. Deaths: Thomas DOUGLASS, 92, of Arcade; Mary Alice SCHANG of Yorkshire. 50 Years Ago - March 19, 1953 J. T. SULLIVAN was re-elected mayor and Clyde DICKEY was re-elected trustee in the Village of Arcade. Shirley CONROY of Java Center was named valedictorian and Dennis SHARON of Arcade was salutatorian of the Class of 1953 at Arcade Central School. The congregation of the Delevan Baptist Church burned the mortgage on its five-year old building. Shirley GARLAPO was elected president of the Arcade Monday Club. 3. Regarding this message from Jan. 2002: --- Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 14:28:55 -0800 From: "Anita Hayes" <[email protected]> Subject: [NYWYOMIN] Town of Sheldon Cemeteries St. Mary Queen of the Rosary RC Church Cemetery, Strykersville, Town of Sheldon: This cemetery is associated with St. Mary's which was organized in November 1885. Two acres of land southwest of the village was purchased in 1887 for a cemetery. --- County Historian Harry S. Douglass wrote ("Strykersville Sketches", 1958): "Doubtless at the formation of the church, a cemetery was laid out just to the west of the Strykersville community burying grounds. The earliest tombstone death found is that of Andrew Kuster who died October 30, 1885, a few days before the formation of the parish." My gr-gr-gr-grandparents (Metzger) died in July and September 1885 and are buried at St. Mary's (their gravestone is still very readable; Douglass probably missed it in 1958). Their funerals (and Kuster's) are in the records of St. Cecilia's in nearby Sheldon - which do not mention burial in Strykersville, but it seems that priests often "forgot" to document burials not made in their own cemetery. The LDS microfilm of funeral records for St. Mary's begins in April 1886. If anyone is familiar with St. Mary's Parish and can help me sort this out, please let me know. I would like to establish whether the Metzgers were buried there in 1885, or buried elsewhere and moved to St. Mary's later. Thanks.

Genealogical Publishing Co. did a reprint in 1999, and Ancestry.com is selling it for about $20, borders.com for $25. The description is:"The 10,000 vital records in this work were drawn from the marriage and death columns of five western New York newspapers published before 1850: the Republican Advocate of Batavia, the Steuben Farmers Advocate of Bath, the Geneva Gazette, the Jamestown Journal, and Palmyra's Wayne Sentinel." I'm just asking to help decide whether to buy it or not. I wonder if there would be much from Wyoming Co.? Pre-1850, were there any local papers (Perry or Warsaw), or might Batavia been the closest? Any comments would be welcome. Randy Hume
