    1. [NYWYOMIN] Bennington cemeteries
    2. I`m hoping someone on the list can give me the names & locations of all the cemeteries in the town of Bennington. I have visited the Cowlesville Cemetery on Lapp Rd but have not found the graves of my Skeele ggggrandparents there. Both died in Cowlesville, I believe; one in 1856 & the other probably between 1860 & 1870. I`ll be grateful for any help. Pat

    2. Jann Parks
    3. Thank you to all you told me where Wales Center is. When I was a kid and visited my Aunt and Uncle, The Chet Hall's there, there was a little store that housed a grocery, gas station, the post office also. I was 7 at the time. They lived in a big house by the creek. The cemetery was up the hill. I hope this is the right Wales Center for me. 1. [NYWYOMIN] St. Cecilia's Church/Cemetery website update
    2. Carolyn Obertein
    3. Thank you for all the contributions for the new St. Cecilia's Website. I added 1/2 of St. Cecilia's Church Cemetery photos today. You will find a map of the cemetery which I broke into sections. If you click on a section it will take you to the names and where they are in that section. You can then click on a name and it will take you to a photo of the headstone. I am working on an alphabetical index for the sections to make it easier to find a headstone. I will soon be adding the 2nd half of the cemetery so please keep checking back.Barb has a great 1853 platt map of Sheldon that is now on the site. If you pull up the map and click on an area you want to see it will take you to a close up so you can better read the names. Barb has also sent photos of the priest of St. Cecilia's. Scott has sent a great photo of St. Cecilia's when it was a woodframe church. If anyone has more information or photos of the church I will be glad to post them. I will also be adding a ne! w section for anyone that would like to add thier family information. If you have a biography of anyone that is buried in the cemetery or that attended the church I will also create a page for each person as information is sent to me. I want to especially thank Barb Durfee, Sheldon Town Historian who has agreed to co-author the page with me. Also, a huge thank you to Scott Barvian for everything he has contributed. He has offered to write a history of the church. 1. [NYWYOMIN] Name Changes/Adoption
    2. Dawn, >From my experience indexing our county's Probate Records (Michigan), I have seen adult men who wanted to change their surname, even if they had a family. It looks like the man had it done and his wife and children's names were changed also. As to where to look, I would start with the Probate/Guardianship Records in the County Court House. They probably have some type of index, in house. Go back to when the man was first born; if he was orphaned. By law someone had to be appointed his guardian, even if his mother was still alive. Then work forward using the surnames that were around him. Adoption files are probably sealed, but following his original surname, you might find some interesting reading in these files. When you find an event, note the date and check the local newspapers for any news article. Sometimes in the social/happening columns. As to the historical society having anything, you could ask. We are indexing the Probate Records from out county, so our library has an index to encourage people to search further. We have about 20,000 names and still going. I have had the pleasant experience, while working on the index, to hear the surprise of a patron who finds one of their people in our binder of names. Good Luck in what you find. Susanne ***** You Wrote: somewhere around 1913, while living near Perry, NY (Wyoming Co.), my great-grandfather found out that he had been orphaned "twice". (He was orphaned as a baby, adopted, and orphaned again.) He had not known about the first time. He subsequently went to court to try to change his last name to his original birth name, but by then he had a wife and child, and, according to family recollections, the judge told him that since he already had a family, he shouldn't change his name. Unfortunately, because of things like orphanage fires and the like, the only documentation I have of any of this comes from what my grandparent's generation remembers. So, I would like to get a copy of the above mentioned court records, but I am not sure where to look. Does anyone know whether this type of thing would be a county court or state court issue? If county court, which particular court would be the most likely -- orphan's court, prothonotary, etc.? Or would the Wyoming County historical society be the best place to look?

My name is David Lindsay Giacomelli and I am trying to assist Elizabeth Wilson, the wife of one of my cousins, to research the Smallwood side of her family. Elizabeth lives in Italy and does not have access to the Internet so I am helping her from half way around the world. One of Elizabeth’s great grandmothers was Sarah Elizabeth SMALLWOOD born in Warsaw, New York on 13 February 1849 and died 13 January 1943. I would very much appreciate any assistance or guidance that you may be able to provide to me to help Elizabeth in her quest. I personally have an interest in family history and I suppose it must have rubbed off a little on Elizabeth when I met her in Italy two years and again last fall when she and her husband visited us here in Victoria. Thank you so much for your time. Dave Giacomelli on Vancouver Island ==== NYWYOMIN Mailing List ==== Visit the Wyoming Co. GenWEb http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywyomin
