Hi, In the History of Town of Java, in the article "The Town of and The Township of Java" by William Roche, page 67, Bill refers to Ferd Bartz having the "register from the old [Markey's] hotel which goes back years and years. I believe he also has some old pictures and if anyone would get in touch with George Fitzmaurice, he is 94 and lived around Java and Sheldon till 1933....." The History was compiled in 1976. Does anyone know what happened to the hotel register and photos? Trish Hackett Nicola Seattle, WA
The 1880 census lists a Frances Putney as the daughter of Morgan Putney. My sister found Frances, born November 24, 1879 on some Putney records she saw from another Putney. Frances was listed as being married to Andrew Powell. having 6 children, one of which is Bessie and another one Claude. The person who had the records is gone now and we can't find a Frances Putney any place other that census. Does any one have a 1900 census? I saw my father's name on it and think probably the Powell family might be on it also. Thank you again. Jann Whalen Parks Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together. On March 18, 1818 the legislature divided the Town of Nunda and organized the four western Allegany townships (now Pike, Eagle, Hume and Centerville) into a new town called Pike. In 1846 the towns of Eagle and Pike were annexed to Wyoming County from Allegany. Wyoming County had been formed from Genesee County on May 14, 1841. An 1866 atlas shows an E. Ward, an A. Ward, an O. Ward and a W. Ward residing near the northern edge of the Town of Eagle. From the 1880 census of Eagle (LDS film 1254948): Family no. 122 - Charles Ward 21 Farm Laborer b. NY Ellen 19 Keeping house Cyrus (unable to read age) b. NY Family no. 125 - John Ward 36 Farmer b. NY Mary 37 Keeping house b. NY These families resided on or near the Center Road east of Eagle Village. Hope these notes are of some help. Good Hunting ww

New York State Assemblyman William Magee is sponsoring a bill that would allow the adoption of cemeteries, much the same way that people can now adopt stretches of highway. see: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=07044 Bill in part reads: JUSTIFICATION: There are currently over 1,800 regulated not-for-profit cemeteries in New York State of which at least 35 have become insolvent since 1990 leaving municipal taxpayers with the bill for the upkeep of these historic and familial institutions. Worse yet, at a cost of at least $2,500 per acre for simple, basic maintenance less than 10 percent of this state`s not-for-profit cemeteries have the required assets to even maintain at least ten acres of their burial grounds. Clearly, a community`s heritage, history, customs and traditions are contained within their cemeteries and this is even more true as genealogy and the tracing of ones roots plays a greater and greater role in the lives of this generation and future generations. Given that cemetery associations and municipalities, alike, are struggling to preserve, maintain and retain these ties to our past and links to our future under very tight budget constraints it would only make sense to implement an "Adopt-A-Cemetery" program to allow businesses, fraternal organizations, service groups and individuals to assist in and receive recognition for helping in the preservation of one of our most sacred places - our cemeteries. Similar initiatives have been widely successful in Texas and Georgia and the establishment of such a program in New York State - modeled after the highly successful "Adopt-A-Highway" program - would preserve our cemeteries for generations to come and lower the burden that is placed on these associations as well as the residents and taxpayers of this great state. ........... Come on all you New York Staters - contact your assembly people and tell them to vote this in. Then get groups to do it. Also contact people on other NYS County L lists. And for those of us who now live elsewhere, we should bring this to the attention of our state legislators. --
Its been a while since I've posted my WARD brick wall. If anyone has a connection, please contact me. Charles WARD born 15 May 1805 in Allegany County, New York (I think). (Have found no record of him there. Do not know his parents. I do know there was a James Ward living in the town of Nunda, Allegany County, New York during the early years (1810) of this county and while he had a number of children, it appears that he had no son named Charles. I also know there was a Zebadiah Ward that lived in this same area of Allegany County, NY during that same period of time but have never been able to find any other names in his family there. First record found so far of my Charles WARD is in Adams County, Illinois on 17 August 1836 where he married: Martha BURKE born 11 March 1816 in Russel County, Virginia daughter of John BURKE and Rebecca VERMILLION. The records found to date indicate that my Charles was born in Allegany County, New York in 1805 and showed up in Adams County, Illinois in 1836, where he married and had a relatively large family. But, according to an old family "hand-me-down" story just recently found, Charles migrated to Illinois sometime during that 1805 and 1836 time frame, by riding a mule from West Virginia to Golden, Illinois. Golden is in fact, in Adams County, Illinois but this is the first time I've ever found anything that suggest Charles might have been in West Virginia at an earlier age. In all my years of research on my great grandfather, Charles WARD I have always been operating under the idea that he was born in Allegany County, New York. Recently, I began reviewing all the New York counties all around Allegany County and I thought it sure would seem possible that my Charles was born in one of these other counties. I had only one source that indicated he was born and it sure seems possible that one source could have been wrong because it was hand written on the back of a Deed of Trust for some property purchased by Charles' son many years later. The handwritten info included dates and places of birth and death for Charles, his wife, and Charles' son and his wife (my grand parents). My guess is that it was written many years later by my grandmother in and effort to record data about her husband's family. In this investigation of mine into the surrounding counties of Allegany County, NY, I discovered that there is a town about 10 miles from the western border of Allegany County in Cattaraugus County. Sure seems possible that maybe sometime in the early 1900's, when my grandmother and grandfather were documenting the family records, that they remembered the name Allegany and knew that is was in New York but upon looking at a map back in those old days, only saw Allegany County, New York, when maybe Charles was really born in the town of Allegany, Cattaraugus County, NY. Does anyone have any record showing a Charles Ward or a child of some family of WARDs that's about the right age, in the counties all around Allegany County, New York or even of West Virginia during that time frame? Would sure appreciate hearing from you, if so or if you have any suggestions.
I have gotten some further information from Dad's family tree records. This may be right but I'm still having no luck finding an obituary. Ola Dean Hall B. January 29, 1909, Moreland, New York D. November 30, 1936, Montour Falls, New York Thank you very much to everyone who has responded. Mari
Hello Everyone, I just joined the list. I'm looking for help with some information on Ola Dean Hall, Father of James Ola Hall, B. 07/31/1932 D. 06/27/2003 I am going through some family tree stuff but the date of Ola Dean Hall is wrong because he died at a very young age with some sort of heart trouble. I would love any information leading to Ola Dean Hall. I have part of an obituary but it's torn in half and I can't read the correct dates for his birth or his death. Thank you. Mari

OOPS, so sorry, list! I forgot to take rich text off when I sent the earlier email. Deepest apologies! Trying again! Going to send the newspaper article separately. _______ Hi! The attached article about the renovation of the Doolittle house was recently published in the Batavia newspaper. The house does look wonderful, once again. If anyone has any old photos of Wethersfield Springs they would be willing to share with me, I would be very grateful. I am writing a book about the Boddy family that once lived there (and also in Hermitage). There are many Boddys in St. Clement's Cemetery. (Little pun!). Would especially like photos of the "old tavern hotel" and St. Clement's Church as well as the Eli Rood Homestead. Elizabeth Boddy married David Porter ROOD in 1850. William Boddy was the deputy postmaster in 1870 and also ran the Boddy Hotel. He was a member of St. Clement's vestry for many years. Randy, you asked about the county historian. The Wyoming County Historian is Doris Bannister and the address is Wyoming County Historian's office, 26 Linwood Ave., Warsaw, New York 14569. The wonderful quarterly publication Historical Wyoming is still being published at the nominal fee of only $7.50 a year. Hello, Can anyone tell me what repository has the 1855 and 1865 New York state census for Wyoming County? Thank you. Sandra
I seem to remember someone on the list asking about the Doolittles in Wethersfield, but I don't have the contact any more. I though you would be interested to know that the Jan. 1960 "Historical Wyoming" is all about Wethersfield, and the Doolittles seemed to be a key founding family. You can probably find a copy in most local libraries, or order a copy from the Wyoming Co. Historian. Best Regards, Randy Hume

I have found one book entitled CIVIL WAR LETTERS OF CHARLES BARBER, which I purchased. Found some information regarding my THOMAS SURNAME. Would like to have more information about the communities, churches, cemeteries, to verify some of the census records I have obtained regarding THOMAS/CLARK/MARTIN and SHELDON families. I would like to find out why these families migrated to the area and again why they left and went further west. Appreciate your attention, Kay Karry
