    3. I am helping a friend. her grandmother was Lilly Kniffin Carter, born July 30, 1872, Perry, N.Y. She died in 1950 in Minnesota. Acc. to my friend, Lilly's father was Thor (Thorn?) Kniffin and mother was Lauretta Taylor. Lilly had a brother, Ward B. Kniffin, and sisters Elsie (Atkinson), Pearl (Brady), and Elva (Spayer). Family photos include Earl A. Taylor and Floy (Floyd?) W. Taylor. Acc. to my research in 1880 census, these may be sons of Reuben and Julia Taylor, Perry Town. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone on this list? It may be that the Taylors were from Perry and that the Kniffin's were from elsewhere. I do not know at this time. Thanks you in advance for any assistance or leads you may be able to give me. NY is new genealogical territory for me. Joan Dwyer, Minneapolis, Minnesota

    1. [NYWYOMIN] MARSTON in Blakely Cemetery, Torrey Hill Road, Java
    2. Patricia Tharp
    3. The following is taken from Blakely Cemetery Inscriptions found in the January 1956 issue of Historical Wyoming, page 61: MARSTON, Artemecia E., wife Obed R. Marston Esq., Feb. 20, 1791-July 11, 1843, 52y. [Editor's note, her stone is badly weathered. She was probably the wife of the Java Town Clerk in 1845, Obed R. Marston). The introduction to this one and one-half page article reads, "This burial place was apparently set aside by Captain Justus Blakely on his farm as a neighborhood cemetery. The oldest identified burial occurred in 1838 and interments have continued in recent years. It is located in the southwest corner of Lot 20, Range 3, on the Torrey Hill Road, immediately west of the junction of that road with the Java Lake-Java Five Corners road. The Torrey Hill road has its western terminus at the Cattaraugus Road, south of Java Center. When these inscriptions were taken on Nov. 14, 1948, the grounds were unfenced, a majority of the stones fallen and some badly weathered. It is reasonably ceratin that some stones have been destroyed and of a certainty that additional burials are on the plot. Some data below has been supplied from other souces." Surnames are: ATCHISON, BLAKELY, CURTIS, JACKSON, LORD, MARSTON (only the one above), PRESTON, THORNTON, TORREY/TORRY _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus

    1. [NYWYOMIN] Gravestone of John MACWHORTER
    2. Jon von Briesen
    3. Dear Friends, I am relatively new to this list. I descend from Fargo, Day, McWhorter, Kimball of Warsaw and from Rescom Tallman of Castile. There is no gravestone at John McWhorter's (1737-1813) burial site, in the Old Pioneer Cem., Warsaw --- just bronze DAR/SAR plaques to honor his Rev. War service. Saw reference, in a family tree submission on the web to someone's having seen John's gravestone at "Homer Holly house." Wyoming Co. Historian verifies that there was a Homer Holly residence, at 127 Wyoming Ave., Warsaw. This Holly family descended from John McWhorter also. This sighting was apparently in the early 1990s. I was unable to contact either the submitter, or the person who claimed to have seen the stone. Does anybody know anything of the whereabouts of this stone? Does anybody know Holly descendants who might know of its whereabouts? I would love to have a picture(s) of this gravestone and to know what was inscribed thereon. Thank you very much. 3. I am tracing lineage of a Lydia Martin, whose parents were Albert Martin and Rachel Shelman. A question has been raised by scanning the 1850 NY Census, Java, Wyoming Co., NY It shows an ALBERT MARTIN, AGE 27 with no wife mentioned but a daughter Lydia M, age 3 (this would be my gggrandmother, Charles A 2 and Rosana 2 mo. The time cycle is right but a surname appearing before his in the census gives a JACOB SHELMAN, age 57 and Lydia age 43 as having 4 children, Rachel 27, Pliney 19, Peter 16, and George 10. I am wondering about Rachel 27 ---- she is a like age with Albert. But it is a mystery. Was she visiting next door when census taker arrived or????? Anyone have any information about these two families. I have pictures of Pliney, Charles A and Rosanna in later life. Thank you for reading this and I have my fingers crossed., Kay Karry

    3. Progressive Batavian Batavia, Genesee County, New York State February 12-1869 Bethany. Married.-In Bethany, Genesee co., Jan. 30th, 1869, by Rev. S. Hulse, Mr. Smith Lord to Mrs. Aken, of Warsaw. M.E. Croff, who has been absent in attendance upon his sick father, has returned, re-opened his harness shop and is again ready for all customers. An old-fashioned spelling school was held at the East Road school kept by A.J. Rumsey, on Monday evening last. Miss Frances Gifford was champion speller of the evening. The monotony of our usually quiet community has been somewhat relieved by several very pleasant "surprises"--one given to our faithful and time-tried friend of nineteen years, Mr. L. Stevens a few evenings prior to his taking leave of the County poor House. The feeling of regret among the inmates seemed universal. Another surprise at D. Wade's was well attended and enjoyed. At the Railroad meeting held at Pavilion on the 30th ult., the following named gentlemen were appointed Committees for making a kind of preliminary survey of several talked of Railroad routes from that place to Railroad connections north. The direct route to Batavia-John Doty, Warren Fay, Wm.C. Smead, Prescott Smead, John Lauderdale, R.A. Crofoot, Sylvester Carr, Richard Pierson. The route to LeRoy-Geo. Tomlinson, Oswald Bond, Nathan Bryant, Chester Hannum, Elbert Townsend, E.H. Talmadge, Morris Dutton. The route to Stafford-L. Crofoot, C.E. Tillotson, Enoch Heath, Marshal Starr, Theodore Henry, Austin Walker, Cyrus Tompkins. The adjourned meeting, to hear the reports of the above Committees, is to be held at the Hotel in Pavilion on Saturday, 13th inst. Border Counties. It is stated that Mr. Wm. G. Wright formerly of Hornelsville was recently sentenced to the Sate Prison for two years and six months for forging railroad tickets. At Suspension Bridge quite a number belonging to the Congregational Church have been immersed, lately, and have declared for the Baptist faith. They have been trying to fix the personale of the "wickedest man" in Wellsville, Allegany County, but there's so many of him they can't do it. Mr. L. Chaffee, of Warsaw, has been appointed Superintendent of the Wrapping Department in the Assembly at Albany. H.B. Jenks, Esq., late cashier of the Wyoming County National bank is about to engage in the forwarding business at Chicago. Gen. Kilpatrick and wife were at Niagara Falls on the 30th ult. The Angelica, Allegany County, 'Reporter' urges the Erie Railroad Company to build their second track from Almond to Belvidere, by way of Angelica, and save 14 miles distance thereby and find a practicable grade. Two boys near Canisteo, Steuben County, quarreled a few days ago, when one of them broke the arm of the other by a blow of his fist. Hard striker, for a boy. Rev. C.R. Wilkins, of Medina, Orleans Co., has accepted a call from the Waskegan Presbyterian Church at Chicago, at a salary of two thousand dollars. A series of Religious meetings are being held in the different Churches of the village of Warsaw, and much interest is manifested in spiritual matters. The collector of the town of Genesee, was knocked down in the highway on Friday night, 26th ult., while going to his home, and robbed of $600. In Avoca, Steuben Co., Martin Hamlin's house was destroyed by fire on the 2d inst. The family were away from home on a visit and returned just in time to see the last part of the structure tumble in.
