I have been following this thread, and would like to put my take on this. There are in the NYS archives in their Digital Collections, 2 digitized files concerning the account books the state had to audit and close out debts for anything concerning the war. They list the places where the state's money went. Applications for pensions and the dates of service by soldiers or survivors are listed. Claims for pay while a prisoner are listed. Mililtia, NMilitary and Civilians who supplied materials or labor are also listed. Even the owners who had guns or lead taken by the state. It makes for fascinating reading. While not indexed or with alot of place names it is a gold mine for uinformation if you have the patience. The books can be downloaded in 20 pg increments and the handwqriting is fairly clear.
