One of my RW ancestors Jonathon Youmans, born in 1763, enlisted, and was put to work doing various tasks in Ann Hawke Hayes outfit, in the later years of the war. He would have been 15 in 1778 when he enlisted. So they definitely allowed it, but they were mostly gophers, I think, doing "householding", as I like to call them, types of duties.
