The Huntsville Daily Times published in Huntsville, AL May 27 1915 Page/Column: Page 6, Column 4 NOTABLE BIRTHDAYS ----------------- MAY 27 ----------------- John Kendrick BANGS, magazine writer and author of popular American books, whose prolific and varied writings have made him the best known American writer of today, is 53 years old today. He has been writing for thirty years, ever since he left college. Born at Yonkers, N. Y., May 27, 1862, he won his philosophy degree at Columbia at the age of 21,and began the study of law. The world of letters attracted him more than the law books, and he became associate editor of Life in 1884. Four years later he joined the staff of Harper’s Magazine and after eleven years there joined the staffs of various other publications. His first book was “Roger Cammerden” produced in 1886 when he was only 22 years old. One or two books a year have come from his pen ever since, and the big magazines have printed numberless stories by Bangs. He married Miss Mary B. GRAY of New York in 1904, and they make their home at Ogunquit, on the Maine coast, and in New York.
