I just rolled thru the 27 pages of St Joseph's Home in 1900, anyone over age 15 seems to be listed as a servant. Just a few age 16 are listed as "at school". I still think the church farmed them out to save money and "teach them a trade". 15 seems to be the magic number as I went thru each page of inmates. I am sure kids got lost in the system back then as much as they do now... sent out to work and then lose track of them. I am so glad none of my ancestors ended up in St. Joseph's. The nuns who ran St Josephs also ran the Assumption School in Peekskill. I wonder if they would have a history of the home or knowledge of the rules back then.
