I've frequently heard Nancy for Ann, although was confused until I figured it out. Polly is still used for Mary, but never heard it used for Elizabeth. I guess you can call yourself whatever you want. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Nicknames years ago were certainly different than today. My 4th g-grandmother, Elizabeth Sherwood Smith had the "pet name" (as they called it) of Polly. My 4th g-grandmother, Ann Sherwood Ward, had the pet name of Nancy. On the other side of the family my maternal grandmother, Mary Donovan Ryan, was always called Mamie.
