Almost everyone in my genealogy class--including the instructor, since I began with this group 10 years ago-- has maintained Polly is a nick name or pet name for Mary. While I never could see the connection between "M" and "P", I accepted the more experienced explanation. Then I had a Joel Bacon marry a "Polly" Wheaton or Whitten in CT 1790 and found I had one, too!
