My youngest grandchildren--Pre-K and 1st grade (going into G and 2nd) are in a full Spanish immersion program. They have to take the third grade state-wide tests in both English and Spanish and pass both to stay in. Although there are some native speakers, there are more English speakera in the program. Supposedly by 3rd grade you can't tell which is which. It is certainly good for teaching our kids Spanish which, as much as I resent it, is a necessity in today's business world. "extra" in the school budget to be able to continue "Immersion" classes in Spanish for KINDERGARTN AND 1ST GRADES! Two pages later there was an article about needing a Bond issue for needed items in the 2007-2008 year. Figure THAT one out! "Both sides of mouth talking" There were a lot of Italian immigrants whose kids came to my school. They learned rapidly, we gave them help and they could practice by translating at home to mama and papa. Worked really well and pretty fast, too!.
