I can't see Marcy for Ellen, but I can see Marcella becoming either Ellen or Marcy. The only nickname I have ever heard for Ellen is naturally, Ellie. You have heard that the Cockneys have a habit of rhyming words, which extends to names. Perhaps that was not limited to Cockneys,so that Molly became Polly just by the sound of it. Patsy for Martha was common, but I believe Patsy and Patty are just a rhyme of Mattie, which seems to fit the name Martha. Remember these were pet names. Someday figure out how Jack became a nickname for John. The French Jacque is translated Jacob. Jacob is not John. The Scots say "Jock". but it is translated correctly as Jacob, not John. Jean, Jane, Jenny, and even Joan are all forms of the same name. Yes, I know Jenny is now used for Jennifer. But that is a newer model of the old standby.
