    1. [NYWESTCH] CANNIFF KENNIFF AKENIF
    2. Marg Smith
    3. "Families of the Colonial Manor of Philipsburg", page 114, "CANNIFF", by Grenville Mackenzie, records 1. Jeremiah KENNIFF or AKENIF settled in Westchester before 1657, and in Mamaroneck before 1670, and had the following children: 2. Jeremiah, b.abt. 1660, married Anne WOOD 3. Esther, b. abt. 1665, married Nathan BAILEY, married 1718, Isaac LAWRENCE. Mackenzie then goes on to record Jeremiah 2 had children, including: 4. Anna, b.1685, married Abraham Van AMBURGH 5. Elizabeth, (no birth details) married William BENNETT Another four children are listed: Jeremiah, Abigail, Maria and William,.born between 1689 and 1701. I thought it was interesting that Annatje, who married Abraham Van AMBURGH, was having children (1695 -1714) in a similar time frame as her father, Jeremiah 2 . I thought it was interesting that Annatje's sister Elizabeth, married William BENNETT was having children in the same time frame (1707-1709) as her father, Jeremiah 2. I thought it was interetsing that Annatje had (her aunty??) Esther, daughter of Jeremiah 1, as a sponsor for her daughter Esther's baptism. Then I received some invaluable assistance from a Dutch Colonies List Member, Pam SEARS, who found the following information: * Baptism Record: The Reformed Dutch Church of New York, page 191: Annekan, oud 3 Jaren, Jeremias, 30 June 1689: Parents: Jeremiah KENNICH, Anne WOOD. Sponsors: Jacob de KEY, Hillegond TEUNIS. Jeremiah 2 had a daughter Annekan, baptised at the age of three with her brother Jeremiah 3. on the 30 June 1689. Did Jeremiah 2 and Annatje WOOD/ WOELFSE have two daughters with the same first name, who lived, married and had children? Pam SEARS also found Antje Canniff/Ceniff, married Jacobus De Baun 12 Jan 1709 at the Reformed Church of Tappan, Rockland Co., NY" The 1702 Census of Orange County, NY, records Jeremiah CENIFF, and Anna, his wife, had three sons and three daughters The transcriptions of baptisms by Pam SEARS records these children as: 1. Annekan 2. Jeremiah (Both baptised together 30 June 1689) 3. Abigael: Baptism Record: The Reformed Dutch Church of New York, page 208: Abigael, 11 May 1692. Parents: Jeremias KENNIP, Anna WOOD. Sponsors: Teunis de KEY, Helena van BRUG 4. Marytje: Baptism Record of the Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, Rockland County, NY (1694-1899): 11 April 1695: Marytje. Parents: Jeremy CENNIFF, Anna WOELFFS; Sponsors: Cozyn HARINGH, Maria FOERS. 5. Unknown KENNIF - a male child (1702 Census) 6. William: Baptism Record of the Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, Rockland County, NY (1694-1899): 14 January 1702: William. Parents: Jeremia CENNIFF, Annitje CENNIFF; Sponsors: William JUWELL. No Annatje, b. abt 1670, married Abraham Van AMBURGH and no Elizabeth, b. abt 1675, married William BENNETT. Of course these two would have been married and having children before this census, but the BIG question is: Are they the daughters of Jeremiah 2, as Mackenzie records, or are they HIS SISTERS, and the daughters of Jeremiah 1??? Would Jeremiah 2 have a much older family followed years later by six more children? Would Jeremiah 2 give two of his daughters the same first name when neither died young?? Mackenzie records Elizabeth as a daughter of Jeremiah 2, however the baptism of two of her sons at the approximate same time as her father is questionable, though possible. It would be more plausible that she is the sister of Jeremiah 2. Mackenzie records Anna, married Abraham Van AMBURGH, as a daughter of Jeremiah 2, however the 1702 census of Orange County, NY records: Jeremiah CENNIF and Anna, his wife, had three male children and three female children. All female children have been accounted for, through baptism records, and two Annas would have been family members if the Mackenzie information was also considered. So were Elizabeth and Anna older siblings, already married and having children, or were they actually the sisters of Jeremiah, not his daughters? Did Annatje have her aunty Esther, daughter of Jeremiah 1, as a sponsor for her daughter Esther's baptism, or was sponsor Esther actually Annatje's sister?? With the invaluable help of Pam SEARS, we suggest the following: 1. Jeremiah KENNIFF or AKENIFsettled in Westchester before 1657, and had the following children: i Jeremiah Kenniff, born Abt. 1660; married Annatje Woelfse Abt. 1685. ii Annatje Kenniff, born Abt. 1670; married Abraham Van Amburgh. Abt 1694 iii. Esther Kenniff, born Abt. 1672; married Nathan Bally Abt. 1695. iv. Elizabeth Kenniff, born Abt. 1675; married Willem Bennett Abt. 1702. Jeremiah 2, married Anna WOOD/ WOULFES had the following children: (baptismsa as recorded above:) 1. Annekan b abt 1686 2. Jeremiah, b. abt 1689 3. Abigael, b. abt 1692 4. Marytje, b. abt. 1695 5. Unknown KENNIF (male child) 6. William, b. abt 1701. Annatje KENNIFF, b. abt 1670, married Abraham Van AMBURGH abt 1694, had the following children: i Hendrick, b. abt 1695 ii Isaac, b. abt. 1697 iii Annatje, b. abt 1700 iv Elizabeth v Esther b. abt. 1707 vi Sarah b. abt. 1709 vii Jeremiah, b. abt. 1712 viii Rachel, b.abt. 1714 Apologies for not putting in all the baptism details for the last mentioned family - this email is getting too long!! Would anyone like to comment, correct or add to our findings please? All comments and suggestions are very welcome! Many thanks, especially to Pam Marg Smith Mardi, NSW Australia (where its almost midnight!!)

    3. Marg, Hendrick Van Amburgh married my 5th great aunt, Hannah Smith, d o Caleb Smith and Unknown. Hannah and Hendrick had a son they named Abraham after his grandfather. Hannah died young and Hendrick remarried a Dutch woman. The two had several children some of whom removed Upstate to the Shawngunk area. I have been following this family for over a decade with little luck. My primary interest is in the Smith side for I am trying to trace back past Hannah Smith's grandfather, Matthew Smith. He was residing in Eastchester in 1681 in the home of Thomas Palmer and testified at Thomas' inquest (documented) when Thomas drowned at Hellgate. That's not to say I'm disinterested in the Kennif side.....they are related to Hannah's son Abraham who is part of my line. 3. Addendum: Forgot to add in the previous post that Hannah Smith was ca 17 yrs old when she married Hendrick Van Amburgh. He was almost as old as her father. This was common in the early days in this area because there were few settlers at the time......maybe all areas but I can't state that for sure because I haven't researched all areas.LOL.
