I sent this info to my niece who lives in Washington. Her reply is interesting. Do check out her pictures on the link at the bottom. they are more extensive. I also googled St. Augustine Church in Ossining, had to scroll all the way down and went to History of the church. The on to the 4th page to see the info about Washington. _____ Her reply: Hi, I can't believe you got that!!! The link below are photos that were taken right after it was found, the photo on the first page, bottom row, laft you will see me arguing with the NYS historians, lol. They are beautiful!!! And, (gotta love the local papers) according to local history (St Augustine's Church, which is very close to the area, go to their site and click on "history") the tunnels were apparently originally built as an escape route for G Washington and troops, who had an encampment near by. The bricks that the historian took to "examine" were found on the floor of the main tunnel, and were NOT the same bricks in the structures. (Also found on the floor, snapple bottles, a folding chair, etc.) The bricks that make this thing up appear to be "homemade" they are irregular, and if you break any of them in half, they are black on the inside, (overcooked, lol), and have no markings on them. Lol, don't get me started, the property is owned by Mystic Pointe (condo complex) and they are thinking of filling the tunnels and chambers, and covering them up, they claim they can't afford to do anything else. What a shame. Bet you didn't think you'd get all that, huh? Anyway, the photos are of the "airholes" some of the tunnel and some of the chambers. If you look at the floor in the photos, you'll see how many you are looking at, some are doubles. The tunnel part starts at Route 9 (I couldn't get close enough to see if the bricks that seal that part are the same bricks as the rest, may have been sealed when they moved Rte 9, as it appears to go under), I have found parts of this thing all the way down towards the river. (The "entrance" on the nature trail in Mystic has an Indian Midden on top of it, historian said it was at least 400 to 600 years old). Check it out, let me know what you think!!
