In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous brick factories along the Hudson north of Ossining all the way past what is now the Croton Harmon shops. All appeared to be served by the railroad. This may be one of the basements form this type of business. If someone has access to Sanbone fire maps that may give an idea of the type of business that was on that site. One could also try looking at early city directories as well. John LaBarre
The clay for the bricks was dug from the banks of the Hudson, both sides of the river. There was a time when Haverstraw on the west bank had a huge brick industry. The bricks were shipped down the river to the city and metropolitan NJ on barges, not by rail. I have a page on the brick industry on my website Dutch Door Genealogy, under "Other, Historical". There is a brick museum in Haverstraw http://www.haverstrawbrickmuseum.org While I have no idea what the massive structure in Ossining was for, I can't think that it had anything to do with bricks, sorry.
