I haven't had a chance to read it in full yet, but there is also an interesting article here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/downloads/pdf/reports/potterbldg.pdf about an office building he had built in 1883-1886 in NYC which NYC has designated as a landmark building. The entire article looks to be interesting reading. The landmark designation is on page 14, his bio included in the article indicates that he left no well, per a NYTimes article dated January 10, 1894. Granted underground cattle tunnels are not as impressive as an early "skyscaper" office building, however, it does show the man is a person of significant historical importance.
