Author: 10thGenColonialAmerican Surnames: TOMPKINS Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: I am stuck on my 3rd Great Grandfather- Solomon Tompkins (born approx 1800-1815) in Peekskill, Putnam, NY- I have his parents as John M Tompkins and Mary E Kear. I see numerous trees with Solomon in them- BUT as sorts of misinformation. I find trees that have Solomon as Solomon Jr- born 1800-1871 -and finding John M Tompkins- but listing different children. My findings show a Solomon K Tompkins married 3 times 1) Josephine Winants (?), 2) Rebecca Merians, 3)Catherine(last name unknown-Possibly a sister to Josephine) My Great Grandfather was William Elias Tompkins born 1876 NY died 1939 in Ohio- his father was Elias Quincy Tompkins born in 1848 NY died 1920 in PA. In searching 1850,1860, 1870 and 1880 census records and a death certificate of Elias Q- appears that Solomon and 1st wife Josephine had Augusta, Philander and Edward- 2nd wife Rebecca had Warren, Josephine(?). Elias, Edgar and Theodore- and 3rd wife Catherine- no children. In looking at Elias Quincy Tompkins death certificate- is list father as ? Tompkins and mother as Elizabeth Wyants. it is signed by Mrs J A Maxwell- who is Gertrude Tompkins-Maxwell - daughter of Elias Quincy Tompkins. I believe Elizabeth Wyants to be Catherine Elizabeth Wyants Tompkins- 3rd wife.. Why first name of Father is left blank ??? Any help would be truly appreciated.
