I looked at the Manhattan City directories around that year, Joseph Schmerbach appears only in the 1856 directory as a proprietor of a "Porter House", 66 Beekman. Corrections to these city directories usually began sometime in the year before the year of publication, so, he was probably added to the directory before the career altering incident.
