I will definitely follow up his possible involvement in the Civil War which could have been a possibility. "Grandpa" Joseph was involved in the European Revolutions of 1848 and I have read that many Germans who fought for the Union during the War were 1848s. I couldn't find his name on the websites you have mentioned though, although I have tried different spellings of his name, but I will contact the Westchester County Archives and the Historical Society.
