Find My Past and Mocavo will unite this year and memberships will go to the custodial survivor: FMP. This is timely to members. You can usually negotiate for a few free months added to your membership deadline. If you're new to family research, tighten your seat belts. These mergers of genealogy companies, search engines, programs, and software has become characteristic to genealogy on the internet...at least in the profit-making sector. By the time the general public learns of changes, it's usually too late to stop the rolling stone. Our frustration sets in when the purchaser doesn't understand the product as well as we do. Many Irish searchers were lured into at least a trail membership with Find My Past. It offers records from the United Kingdom, which includes Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. It's historical Irish newspapers help put flesh on the bones of our Irish born ancestors, yes, Catholics included. Find My Past has an ongoing business relationship with NYC based New York Genealogical & Biographical Society aka NYG&BS (http://newyorkfamilyhistory.org/). Now, Utah born D. Joshua Taylor, MLS, leaves Find My Past to become president of NYG&BS on February 1st, 2016. It appears Josh paved the thoroughfare between both genealogical entities. NYG&BS traversed multiple cosmetic surgeries in the past decade. Once upon a time "the society" with moonlight in their eyes, owned a four-story building at 122 East 58th Street, replete with members-only research facilities, a private library, and bloodlines of urban aristocrats. [For the curious, its former grandeur and political demise, is in the annals of Rootsweb's NYC-L.] The building? Sold. Books? Reside at NYPL. The last many years NYG&BS sells courses, trips, and historical periodicals. Sounds like retail to me. Following the NYG&BS saga has been a real trip. Perhaps a reinvention to "The Housewives of NYG&BS" will succeed? Or, perhaps Josh Taylor will create a persona for NYG&BS that's culturally inclusive? *NYG&BS http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=New_York_Genealogical_and_Biographical_Society Barb Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com
