When anyone searches Westchester, especially river towns, and especially Northern Westchester, you should check Rockland as well. The Hudson River narrows as you track it north of NYC. From Peekskill, I can easily see houses, count train cars on Rockland's former West Shore Line [now only freight], and even traffic on Rt. 9W. Residents, farmers & their produce, and bricks from the river-line brickyards* made multiple daily boat/ferry runs across the Hudson. Once the Erie Canal was operating, the daily flow of products and people on the Hudson made it the major, busy thoroughfare. *Brickyards employed "famine"era Irish. Purdy? Hmm... now that's an interesting name. Quaker? Interesting. I have a potential Purdy in my direct line. I've actually been trying to disprove that one in preference for another couple. What have you got on Purdy? My Purdy would actually have lived in Rockland County, for a while at least. Quakers kept good records, if she was a Purdy, I should be able to find out more about her. That opens up a whole new line of research. > > > > It's surprising that folks don't inquire about early > Quaker records in Northern Westchester County, > especially around Chappaqua, Amawalk, and Purchase. > > While previewing these, I found many of these > surnames: BIRDSALL, CARPENTER, HAIGHT, > MILLER & PURDY. > > I hope this brings you closer to your ancestors, > Barb > > > > *************************************** > Have you checked out the Westchester County GenWeb site yet? > http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/ > *************************************** > Browse or Search the Mailing List Archives of postings sent to this list > over the years. A few months ago someone posted onlist for this surname in Ossining/Sing Sing, NY. I have more information on this name. Please contact me. Thank you, Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com
It's surprising that folks don't inquire about early Quaker records in Northern Westchester County, especially around Chappaqua, Amawalk, and Purchase. While previewing these, I found many of these surnames: BIRDSALL, CARPENTER, HAIGHT, MILLER & PURDY. I hope this brings you closer to your ancestors, Barb

A few random thoughts re: Orphan Asylums, an area near to my heart. 1) You are more likely to get records if the facility is closed and the nuns no longer reside on the "home's" property. 2) For Catholic institutions of all types, contact the archivist for the Archdiocese/Diocese where the "home" was located. I have the record of them selling the property, but I do not know how they obtained it. It isn't in the grantor or grantee books. I'm guessing it might have been from a probate, but I don't have any further information. Cornelia's maiden name, or a previously married name, was Cornelia Ingersoll. I do know that a Josiah Ingersoll farmed land in the same area -- I think it was part of the Beekman Patent. I'm not sure how many were aware of this story, and the related issues. It may be of interest to both of these groups, even though it pertains specifically to New York City. I wasn't even aware this source of data existed. Makes me wonder about similar records in Westchester, that I would be interested in. Dear Friends, Today's Westchester County, NY, shares its southern border with the Bronx. There was a town called West Chester [and East Chester] within Westchester County. 1868 Beers map> This was the southernmost section of Westchester Co. http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~21172~610001:Westchester,-N-Y- Including> West Farms, Morrisiana, Wakefield, Olinville, Bronxdale, Unionport, Stinard Town, Middletown, Schuylerville, Wrights Island and Fort Schuyler In the yellow (western) section, see Woodlawn Cemetery? In the NW green section marked Catholic Cemetery is today's St. Raymond's Cemetery. You can use these cemeteries and bodies of water as definitive points in your research. I hope this brings you closer to your ancestors, Barb

Great stuff! Which line I'm from is my problem. Adrian "Edward" Waldron (Jr) married Anne Secor on 10 Feb 1803 in West Hempstead, Rockland, NY. She was between 9 and 19 at the time, and she was 9 months pregnant. The first child was born 17 days later. So, definitely older than 9, I think. I've only been able to use secondary records to set her age. She died between 1823 and 1825 with 10 children (at least 6 survived). I've used a process of elimination, but forgot what I used to do that, other than the Census records. So, I wanted to do it right and build the Sicard/Secor/... line out fully from Ambroise into it's own gedcom database, complete with citations. At the moment, my theory is her father was John Secor. It's possible she had a brother John J Secor. I have a list of six Secor men who are alternate possibilities. Benjamin and James D. Secor I have been able to positively rule out. Also ruling out the Dutchess County Secor line. There are two Johns. It's always possible there are yet other possible fathers, such as one of the Loyalists. Edward Waldron's father was a Patriot. Which might explain the utter silence on Anne's family. With some patience, detective work, maybe some DNA, and a little luck, I think I can convincingly solve this mystery. It's a real thorn in my tree. > The name Sicard was changed into about 8 different names by the 3rd and > 4th generations: Secord, Secor, Secort, Sicar, Sicart, Secoy, etc The I know. I've experienced this phenomenon before with other names. Thank you, Brian
Brian, That's my family, a well known Huguenot name. What do you need to know ? Ambroise Sicard was born in Mornac, near La Rochelle, France, about 1631 and had salt flats and vine yards. He fled from there to London about 1680 with his five surviving children, Ambroise 1666-1673, Daniel 1672-1742, Jacques 1675-1773, Marie 1677, Silvie 1678. His wife has never been identified and even a trip to France and London has not helped me give her a name or what happened to her. The Huguenot Church in Threadneedle Street sent Ambroise and those 5 children on to New York., where they helped found the city of New Rochelle, NY. In 1695 letters of denization were granted to he and his 3 sons., making them all English subjects. In his 1701 will he gave each of his sons a house and land in the new Rochelle area. In Sept 1698, Ambroise and his son Daniel, Daniel's, wife Catherine and 6 month old Daniel were listed in the 1st census taken in New Rochelle, and the other sons and their families are also listed. In 1712 he was still alive in the next census and named James Sycar, 75, living with Daniel Sycar Sr, and his family. I don't know what line you belong to but mine is Daniel and his son Daniel Secord, born in New Rochelle in March 1698 and listed in that 1st census. His son Jacques/James born 1732 is my 5th ggf. The name Sicard was changed into about 8 different names by the 3rd and 4th generations: Secord, Secor, Secort, Sicar, Sicart, Secoy, etc The Loyalist line who went to Canada during the American revolution came from the Secords, the sons of that 2nd Daniel. If you need more info, just ask, Sicard/Secord descendant > Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2015 10:05:11 -0500 > To: nywestch@rootsweb.com > Subject: [NYWESTCH] SECOR/SECORD/SICARD research > From: nywestch@rootsweb.com > > > > Is anyone on the list researching the Huguenot Secor/Sicard family? > Does anyone know of a one name study of the family? > > > > *************************************** > Have you checked out the Westchester County GenWeb site yet? > http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/ > *************************************** > Browse or Search the Mailing List Archives of postings sent to this list over the years. Dear Friends, Wonder why you can't find your ancestors in a census? Here, a Brooklyn Eagle reporter interviewed a census enumerator, Mr. Sedgwick, and several conductors from the Brooklyn City Railroad Company* about their participation in 1890 U.S. Census.
