    3. Great point, Mark, but that's not a definitive predictor. Often a site lists the newspaper you're looking for, but doesn't have the years you need. I still rely on my volumes of Maher's "Index to Marriages and Deaths in the New York Herald" [favored by Irish], but that ends in 1876. The value of any subscription will depend on whether the company has digitized the newspapers you are interested in. Before subscribing, check to see which newspapers it has available. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com -----Original Message----- From: Mark Lomax <mlomax1074@gmail.com> Access to Newspaperarchive.com is available through many public libraries. Check with your local public libraries before subscribing. I have access through the Los Angeles Public Library. Currently, I have a personal subscription to GenealogyBank.com, and I had a subscription to Newspapers.com (owned by Ancestry.com), which I let lapse. They all have different newspapers available for searching. The value of any subscription will depend on whether the company has digitized the newspapers you are interested in. 1. [NYWESTCH] Westchester' "Cemetery Row"
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Manhattan has its Restaurant Row, but Westchester has "Cemetery Row!" Our ancestors certainly had foresight when they plotted the farmland landscape for the county's largest cemeteries. As you travel north from the Town of North White Plains, along Bronx River Parkway, to the Taconic State Parkway, you reach Valhalla then Hawthorne.* Metro North Railroad's Harlem Line has stations in all three towns. Proximity to trains was certainly a consideration for this master plan. And, it's super convenient to those of us who perform gravestone photography. These are the cemeteries in Cemetery Row. Gate of Heaven---RC, inception 1916 [usurped old Fairview Cemetery] 10 West Stevens Ave. Hawthorne, NY 10532-2205 914-769-3673 Kensico Cemetery---Non-sect; inception 1889 273 Lakeview Avenue Valhalla, NY 10595 Toll free 1-888-KENSICO (536-7426) Mount Eden Cemetery---Jewish; inception 1927 20 Commerce St, Hawthorne, NY 10532 914-769-0603 Mount Pleasant Cemetery---Jewish; inception 1889 80 Commernce Street Hawthorne, NY 914-769-0397 Sharon Gardens---Jewish; inception 1953; maintained by Kensico 273 Lakeview Avenue Valhalla, NY 10595 Toll free: 1-888-KENSICO (536-7426) [closed Saturdays] * Hawthorne NY was named after American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. His daughter Rose converted to Catholicism and began Rosary Hill, a cancer hospice in Hawthorne NY. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com

    1. [NYWESTCH] Catholic Cemetery w/non-Catholic Burials
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. If you cannot locate a pre-1916 burial cemetery for a loved one, this is for you. When Gate of Heaven Cemetery opened (1916; Catholic), their grounds usurped the old Fairview Cemetery (non-sectarian). Fairview deaths are definitely in section 36, and perhaps adjacent areas. (MAP: http://gateofheavenny.com/pdf/Gate-of-Heaven-Cemetery-Map.pdf) Gate of Heaven is the only NY Archdiocesan cemetery in Westchester County NY. St. Raymond's is the only NY Archdiocesan cemetery in Bronx County NY. Fairview Cemetery is not listed in Find A Grave's 236 county cemeteries, nor is it listed in Westchester Gen Web. Gate of Heaven is digitizing its burials. Staff and I experimented with death dates to determine if Fairview burials appear in their database yet. We did get hits for as far back as 1910 and I noticed some Jewish names were found that year. This tells me that Gate of Heaven is incorporating its early Fairview Cemetery records into their database. Sharon Gardens,Valhalla NY is in the same area, but didn't begin serving only Jewish residents until 1953. Sharon Gardens is a section of the non-sectarian Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY (non-sectarian, opened 1889). In conclusion, if you have Jewish ancestors who died in Westchester or Bronx counties pre 1953, check Kensico Cemetery first. If your Jewish and non-Catholic ancestors died before 1916, check with with Gate of Heaven and ask them to search Fairview Cemetery records. You just might find that missing ancestor's burial. 3. I for one am thankful for his lndexes, so I can find the wills on familysearch. If I could not find what I am looking for and really need it, I would not mind paying him for it. I have spent a lot of money over the years traveling to different states to do research and get records. In the olden days, we would go to Pittsfield Mass for a week a couple of times a year to do census records and look at ship records. I once spent an entire week there going through World War 1 Draft cards for NYC looking for 1 person to break down a brick wall, now I get it in seconds on Ancestry. Paying for subscriptions, etc is so much cheaper than gas, hotel room and food and you can do it from the comfort of your home. Thank you David. Keep up the good work ! 3. Miz, obvious you did NOT bother to read carefully, not only that you forwarded to Westchester list. 1. The lists I created from RAW records. 15-20 years before the images start going online, and those images are still without any online indexes except mine. AND the lists are FREE to read and decide. 2. Provided the link to FamilySearch's county probate collection. 3. Only thing I sell is "Clean Scanned, Paper or PDF copy of record" and the link is provided for more details on this: http://www.sampubco.com/wills/order.htm READ this: What do you get from ordering? 1. Straightening the page 2. Crop out excess empty space 3. Resize from oversize 4. Improve contrast if necessary 5. Then the pages are zipped to be sent OR are printed. 6. If PDF is request, the images are incorporated into PDF and sent by email notice. (What is PDF, anyway? It is a booklet of few pages.) And I'm not selling RAW images. I am selling service to make better images or should I say repair (YOU should see many of the raw images in light writing, images being crooked, poor contrast, excess empty space around the images, etc. Probate files are insane, a lot of strips of papers taking up less than half of a page with other half taking space showing nothing on back of strips.) 3. Here is an alphabetized list of veterans who are buried in Ossining, Westchester, NY. http://findgrave.org/city-ossining-ny/ As I previewed several name that I know, I *think* these are more recent burials, meaning, not Civil War veterans, but I did not click on each and every one.
