    2. Bob, I just sent to NYS for a Civil War records for $3. I will let you know what it includes when I receive it. This is much less than the NARA files. I was googling around last weekend and found New York State Archives - http://iarchives.nysed.gov/CivilWarWeb/print.jsp that is the page I printed my request so you would have to go back to "home" tab and start your search, it searches by Name & company if know if not just the Name and will list all of them, I found only about 6 James Dickinson's so I narrowed it down by age, and took a chance for $3 to see if it has enough detail to prove he's mine. Thanks, Carol L. Heap "You live as long as you are remembered"

Dickinson from Poughkeepsie who enlisted in NY Infantry 95th. http://iarchives.nysed.gov/CivilWarWeb/print.jsp this is the page I printed so click on home and it should tale you back to the beginning. 3. Thanks, Maureen. Saratoga would make a nice weekend trip from here. I heard a while ago that there are Civil War records in Albany that can be sent for. .....that was approx a decade ago when I had a classmate at SUNY who worked in the CW record room up there. Too bad I forgot his name but he probably would have moved on by now anyway. 2. Mercy! With all this information about SMITHS zipping through cyber space, I can't help but jump in and inquire if anyone has any information about a Mary Ann Smith, b. 1813 in Connecticut and died May 26, 1901 in Richfield Springs, Otsego Co. NY. She was married to Nathan Layten, b 1806, d.1872 in Richfield Springs, NY. Apparently late in life she married a Buell, however I found her death certificate listen under Layten. The one and only thing I wanted from that birth certificate were her parent's names -- Smith was written as her father and her mother's name was so badly smudged, it's impossible to read. I've yet to recover from that disappointment! All records indicate her birth place as Conn. -- no city or town! Another disappointment! Mary Ann was my great grandmother! HELP! 3. Thanks, Maureen. That is the same Samuel H Smith as on the cemetery card with all the same info......yet NARA can't find him. Samuel's wife's name was Almyra (Ward) Smith and he outlived her. She died in 1869......and yes, he died in August 1871. 3. No, Bill, that's Samuel S Smith dob 1791 who married Elizabeth Orser. They are buried in Sleepy Hollow. "My" Samuel Smith is Caleb and Elizabeth Sherwood's grandson, whose father is John Smith. I know very little about John except he married someone named Effie and that both are in my family records. McKenzie has him listed as one of Caleb and Elizabeth's children but with no other info except his name and death date. 3. The card also says that Sam enlisted in Ashford, CT, but someone on the Military List told me that guys sometimes enlisted where they got bigger bonuses or for other reasons even though they didn't live in that particular place. I never knew Sam to live in CT but I suppose it's possible. 3. Maureen: Is Samuel's father Caleb SMITH married to Elizabeth Sherwood? Bill Forshay >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> quillpen1 <quillpen1@optonline.net> wrote: Thanks, Maureen. Here's what is on the cemetery card: Smith, Samuel H, dob 1808, dod Aug 15,1871, date of enlistment Oct 4 1861, date of discharge Oct 25, 1862, Wounded Sept 17, 1862 at Antietom, MD (that's the spelling on the card). I know from family records and Dale Cemetery records that birth and death dates are correct so that would have made him 53 yrs old at time of enlistment. 3. Robert, Is it possible for you to do a lookup for my g-g-grandfather Samuel Smith??
