    2. Benita, You can go to the Westchester County Archives in Elmsford. They are open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for research. They have many maps you can look at and they can show you how to search back through the deeds (which is what is done in a title search- which I believe only goes back 75 or 100 years) to see the names of owners. The Westchester County Historical Society is there and I think this is where you should start your search. They are very knowledgeable and can help guide you. Have you checked to see if the New Rochelle Library has a local history collection? It might contain old photographs. You might also want to check with the Library in White Plains, being the county seat, they may have information that would be helpful. Property tax rolls might also be helpful, they probably would be found in New Rochelle's Town Hall or they would know where to find them. The Town's Zoning/Building/Planning Dept. should also have access to old maps. They might have photos too ! Up here in Dutchess County, I went to my Town Hall in LaGrange and found a notation in property tax rolls about the 1855 farm house next to my property and it said that Mr. East's son was building the house for his bride. Maybe I was just lucky in that search..... Have you talked to any nearby elderly neighbors to see if they might know something about the house? Have you checked withe local newspaper to see if they have a collection of old photos? Have you contacted the Town Historian? Good luck! 3. Hi Everyone, Just dug up some family skeletons on my grannies 4th hubby ADOLPHUS HENRY NEY. I went on a new site Footnote.com that is copying records from the Nat'l Archives. I input Adolphus' name & printed out 80+ pages from The Federal Bureau of Investigation on gold ole Adolphus. Fantastic info on him from this report. He was a famous chemist & that I knew but did not know he was a German Alien Enemy No. 4095 during WW1. He came to the US first in 1903 & lived in Buffalo, then went to England & returned in 1910. I found on Ancestry a city directory for Scarsdale for 1918-1919 for him on POST ROAD. He was arrested & sent to Ft. Oglethorpe prison in GA 3/14/1919, and paroled in Dec 1919. He was then in jail 5/15/1920 in Scranton, PA for embezzlement & issuing threats that he was going to blow-up the Sepoy Color Co. plant where he worked. Does anyone have any info on this person??? He did not marry my grannie until 1928 or so. Thanks, Suzi Motley Wilmington, NC

    1. [NYWESTCH] a question from a newbie on this list
    2. Benita Gross
    3. Hi all, I live in New Rochelle and found this list by way of searching for information about my house. I am impressed with the resourcefullness of the folks on this list, and your attention to detail. I am also surprised by the dead ends these historical searches can lead one to - for instance, the NEw Rochelle Historical Society listed on the NYGenWeb - the phone is disconnected and web search doesn't find any other contact info for them. So, I am asking for some suggestions regarding the original construction of my house - where besides the building dept and the title search might I look for info? Photographs? The names of the original owners? The house was built in 1895 and there was an addition ,made in 1930. The title doesn't have any details - but bascially the back of the house was added on then. I would like to know how it looked before that change. Thanks Benita ____________________________________________________________________________________ Pinpoint customers who are looking for what you sell. http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/

Does such an organization still exists? If so, perhaps their weight added to the preservation cause might be useful. 3. I haven't had a chance to read it in full yet, but there is also an interesting article here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/downloads/pdf/reports/potterbldg.pdf about an office building he had built in 1883-1886 in NYC which NYC has designated as a landmark building. The entire article looks to be interesting reading. The landmark designation is on page 14, his bio included in the article indicates that he left no well, per a NYTimes article dated January 10, 1894. Granted underground cattle tunnels are not as impressive as an early "skyscaper" office building, however, it does show the man is a person of significant historical importance. Potter's earlier building, completed in 1857, was known as the World Building, after the New York World which was based there. (This was before Joseph Pulitzer bought the paper.) 1. [NYWESTCH] Orlando B Potter, lawyer, farmer, builder of tunnels in Ossining? Part1
    2. Hello everyone. I spent some time thinking about those tunnels. Time for research. Why would a farmer go through the expense to do such a thing? I guess because he had more money than almost anyone and could do it. Does the fact he was a very important person in many fields constitute enough to get these tunnels and rooms declared historic, I have no clue. Was there some particular reason when he built them? Trying to find a safer way to store grains or did he just not what the cattle trampling his fields so they looked nice? It also looks like after he died that the "farm" became a Fresh Air establishment with 2 of his daughters living there with their many servants. His Probate file might give some clues as to the disposition of his estate, but I am sure it is HUGE and it could be in either Elmsford or NYC. I do not plan to look for or read it. I have included here what I could find on the Internet and in my subscription libraries. Trying to prove some historic value to the tunnels may prove difficult and time consuming, unless someone can get the Town of Ossining to declare it historic, I doubt there will be any way to save it. After doing this research I would say he did build the tunnels. I wonder if the The New York State Agricultural Society could shed some light on the tunnels. I will post my findings in 5 emails since it is to large for 1 email. 3. You're welcome, Barb. Even when I was in my twenties it only went as far as the turnoff to Craryville...then much later I was up that way again and it connected to the Mass Turnpike. 3. I think you're right Barb. We lived near Route 55 and it was basically the only state road in the area. The Taconic (which we locals simply called the Parkway..and still do among ourselves) was far away and 82 also....so drivers coming and going to and from NYC used 55 most of the time. Later when the Taconic became popular with hunters there were a lot of State Police stops for "deer" that were proudly displayed on the fenders of cars going to NYC. Actually they were cows. Our neighbor who had Jerseys painted signs on them saying "COW". We had only one Jersey for personal use and kept her near the barn during deer hunting season. The rest of ours were Holsteins .......with a couple of Guernseys which we kept out of sight too...... especially after the time I was hanging clothes and several bullets went thru the garment in my hand. When I ran for the house the idiots kept shooting at me. Found out later they were from NYC. 3. Thanks, Jean Ann. It had occurred to me that perhaps the tunnels were used for cattle moving from pasture to pasture...... except my thought was that a busily trafficked road might have been the reason. I grew up on a dairy farm and when farmland was taken for state and county roads it often dissected the pastures used for cattle to eat. "Cattle Crossing" signs usually sufficed for county roads back then but many people traveling thru on state roads to and from NYC hadn't a clue as to what the signs meant......and when they were told were absolutely amazed that CATTLE had the right-of-way.LOL. Our cows moved just fine on grass and didn't stop when they weren't supposed to. Either that guy had really stupid cows or he was a "gentleman farmer" who knew nothing about them. LOL. 3. I did one year of dress revue, but mostly just cattle. My grandmother was Ivy Fish--a real character. Those were indeed the "good old days." My biggest thing was to get up ahead of (why can't I think of his name?) and get the milking machine first so I could be done early. My grandmother wouldn't let me leave before 4. The boys had no such rules, but I still managed to get it first at least half the time. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. 3. We had Jerseys, but did lose a few to hunters. My uncle, who lived in Salt point, closer to you, had Guernseys. Did you show at the Rhinebeck Fair? My uncle was in charge of the livestocvk show for many, many years. My grandmother slept in the gorl's dorm and enforced curfew when I was young. We lived in southern Columbia County. I was on 55 a couple of weeks ago going to check out my great-grandparents graves in Pleasant Valley--I was staying with a cousin still in Columbia County. He is in the northeast part. The Parkway didn't go that far when I was growing up. It ended at Red Hook. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Barbara Barbara L. de Mare, Esq.
