    3. Carol-- Thank you for sharing this! I've been reading, chasing and tracing Westchester cemeteries in the vicinity of Rye, Harrison and White Plains for almost 2 years--unable to learn what, when or where cemeteries were moved when the church yard was destroyed. Many suggestions and dead ends--no pun intended. Christ Church in Rye had a fire prior to 1785 and my last letter to Grace Church, WP went unanswered, with a report [perhaps on this list] saying it is now a shelter or something like that? Need to contact the Episcopalian Archives. When this popped from my screen -- while rather aimlessly reading/deleting some mail, it really woke me up! These are my people--Captain Joseph Hatfield's daughter Ann married my Mr. Tredwell. their 3rd daughter is my ggrandmother, Rebecca, and I have been unable to prove the connection to her parents. I can now try for an obit or death record of Captain Joseph--hoping he mentions daughter and granddaughter in a Will. I believe he died in 1837. Thanks SO much! If posted to any other lists, please copy: seamus@nycap.rr.com B. The largest project the Troy Irish Genealogy Society has undertaken so far is the automation of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index. This 10 Volume Marriage Index of Rensselaer County marriages, from 1908 to 1935, has over 60,000 names. Volume I (January 1908-April 1913) with its 5,000 marriages and 10,000 names, was added to the TIGS website on June 13, 2006. Volume II, (April 1913-May 1918) with another 5,000 marriages and 10,000 names was added to the TIGS website on January 12, 2007. Volume III, (May 1918-April 1920) with another 2,000 marriages and 4,000 names has now been added to the TIGS website. C. You can view these marriage records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. D. If you are researching relatives with a RENSSELAER COUNTY, NY area connection, you will be interested in these three on-line, name searchable, records of 24,000 names of local residents who were married in Rensselaer County, New York. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, you might want to check out the data base. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. You may even find an earlier marriage for your relative that you never knew about. E. In order to appreciate the marriage index on the TIGS website, you need an understanding of the set up of the Marriage Index book at the County Clerk's Office. All marriages, along with complete detailed information on the bride and groom and their parents, were first entered into the Record of Marriages Book. Brides and Grooms names were then posted to the Marriage INDEX Book which served as a locating device to find the complete record in the Record of Marriages Book itself. Without the Marriage Index, you could not easily locate a name in the Record of Marriages Book. The Marriage Index Book has SEPARATE pages of data for Brides and SEPARATE pages of data for Grooms. For example, for the letter "A", there is a page of Brides names beginning with "A" and ANOTHER page of Grooms names beginning with the letter "A". The data on each page is limited to the first and last name, a page reference number, a marriage license number and the date of the marriage. Names of SPOUSES are NOT linked together in the index. The only linkage to the spouse in the Marriage Index is the marriage number. F. The TIGS data base has greatly improved the usefulness of the Marriage Index as follows: 1. By using the marriage number, the TIGS Marriage Index now links the names of the brides AND the grooms on ONE LINE of data, thus providing a much more useful research tool. 2. Some entries in the Record of Marriages Book were never posted to the Marriage Index Book. These missing records were identified by TIGS workers and added to the TIGS Marriage Index. 3. A number of records in the Marriage Index showed only INITIALS for either the bride or the groom. In many cases TIGS workers were able to determine the ACTUAL names from the original source documents and added them to the TIGS data base. 4. Several records for grooms names were originally posted to the brides pages of the Marriage Index Book and a number of brides names were posted to the grooms pages of the Marriage Index Book. TIGS workers corrected these errors in developing the TIGS index. 5. A number of transcribing errors when the Marriage Index Book was created were discovered by TIGS workers and corrected. 6. Last but not least, the TIGS Marriage Index is in strict alphabetical order unlike the original index. For example, on the original index, you may have four or more lengthy pages of Grooms names ALL beginning with the first two letters "Ma" and in no order whatsoever. G. In using the TIGS Marriage Index data base, keep in mind the following: 1. Handwriting in some cases was very difficult to read and there could be some problems with spelling. 2. It appears that all of the postings to the Vol. III Marriage Index Book show a office filing date instead of the date of the marriage. The entry in the Marriage Book itself, however, will show the date of the marriage. 3. Remember, the TIGS index is a transcription of the Marriage Index Book and NOT the Record of Marriages Book itself. It is always possible that the original source documents, the Affidavit For License To Marry, the Certificate And Record of Marriage and the Certificate of Consent, (for minors), were not posted correctly to the Record of Marriages Book, or that entries in the Record of Marriages Book were not posted correctly to the Marriage Index Book, or that TIGS transcribers misread the handwriting. If there is a question on any entry, the actual source documents at the County Clerk's Office would have to be referenced. H. In working on Volume 3 of the Marriage Index it was discovered that none of the original records could be located. Extensive searching has yet to locate these records. Photocopies of the original Volume 3 marriage documents, therefore, are not available. For marriage numbers from 10000 to 12000 in Volume 3, the only item available will be a photocopy of the full detailed record that was posted to the Marriage Record Book FROM the original documents. The County Clerk's Office has agreed to provide a photocopy of the Marriage Record Book entry for those names where the original documents are not available. This photocopy WILL show the correct date of marriage. In order to copy the record, this very heavy and large book (13 x 19) has to be moved from the basement vault and taken to a photocopier on the first floor I. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request copies from the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. There are SEPARATE request forms for Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3. J. The original pages of the Marriage Index Book were scanned by TIGS members. The resulting pdf files were then sent to the volunteers working on the project as an attachment to an email, along with an Excel spreadsheet for data entry. This extensive data base was made possible by over 30 volunteers from all over the United States. Volunteer names are shown on the TIGS website. K. The next step in the Marriage Index Project will be Volume 4 & 5 which are in one combined index. These 2 volumnes cover another 4,000 records and 8,000 names. If you want to be added to the list of volunteer transcribers, send an email off list to: seamus@nycap.rr.com with your name, address and telephone number. You will be contacted when work on Volume 4 & 5 starts shortly. L. TIGS would like to hear from you if this marriage index was helpful in your family research. I have an ancestor's house in New Rochelle, too. He and his son built it ca 1720, and it still has a lot of the original mud and oystershell mortar between the rocks. What is now the front of the house was originally the back and vice versa. I was lucky enough to spend the night in the oldest part of the house, which is in wonderful conditlion or was then, in about 1983 or-4). It was then owned by a man who was a college professor and also an historian. His wife, who was British, was an excellent interior designer had a big hand in making sure that all the furniture in the house was either original to it, or was at least of the same era. It you're ever in Westchester Co., and are interested in seeing it, ask someone about it. As far as I know, it's just known as the Lispenard House. The address is 180 Davenport Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10806. I can't tell you who lives there now, and the man who owned it when I was there, has since died, and I think his wife took their two young children back to England, where I'm sure she had family. The Lispenard family were Huguenots, and came to Albany, NY, about 1680. (The orginal last name was L'Espenard, but was anglesized to Lispenard. At one time, he owned most of what is now the Financial District of NY. Part of Trinity Church and part of the Trade Towers were built on land that had belonged to the Lispenards. One of his sons, Leonard, eventually inherited a lot of the land, and buillt his home in a parklike area. He opened it the public who wanted to take picnics in the summer, and to be seen by their wealthy friends. Antoine was in his 80's when he and another son built the house in New Rochelle. All the walls are 1918 inches thick, and even in the summer time, the house is comfortably cool. I hope that this will be helpful to you! Best regards, Barbara Cofer It's is wonderful conditlion ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

Based on information he received from a cousin, George was said to be buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Yonkers, NY, they checked and found no record of this person buried there, that's how I became involved St. Mary's Yonkers Cemetery contacted me at St. Mary's Cemetery Rye Brook, NY. I checked out records and no luck either. 1.George Edward Reffell born June 24, 1893 in Chelsea London 2. Was in the Royal Flying Corps During WWII. 3. Married a Vernon McMartin in 1925 she was from Minnesota, died 1/10/1944. 4. There were no children. 5. A small death notice in the New York Times says he was Vice President of the G.A Saxton Co. Inc.(Investment Securities) of 70 Pine Street, NY, and that he lived at Scarsdale Manor Apartments. and died at White Plains Hospital on 10/1/1954. Any help or suggestions on where to go from here would be most appreciated. 3. Very nice, Holly. Thanks so much. In all my years of Westchester research I didn't know those were online. My only problem when I got to images was that I needed to unblock my Pop UP blocker because I usually have it enabled so as not to get ads constantly. After I unblocked , it worked like a charm. 3. You can search the deed index for Westchester County online, back to the old deeds. http://ccpv.westchesterclerk.com/ Choose public Access. It only works with Internet Explorer, not Firefox. Chose Index books. Enter a few letters of the last name. Choose Grantor or Grantee. Choose a time range. Before 1898, there is no use to choose a town because they are all lumped together. Click search. For 1670 to 1898, yu will get all the images with deeds for grantors or grantees beginning with that letter. They are not in order! They are in order by Filename, which will be like 1000M1, 1000M2, for the M's. You have to guess and use trial and error to find the one you need. When you click on an Image, and one or more files comes up in another window, click open. Once it opens in Windows Photo Viewer, you can navigate through the pages in that image file using the page numbers in the toolbar at the bottom of the page. They will send you the actual deed copies, once you find the index reference, for a nominal amount. http://www.westchesterclerk.com/sections.asp?mu_step=004 Holly East Bangor, PA >-----Original Message----- >From: nywestch-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nywestch-bounces@rootsweb.com] >On Behalf Of Benita Gross >Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 5:47 PM >To: nywestch@rootsweb.com >Subject: [NYWESTCH] a question from a newbie on this list > >Hi all, >I live in New Rochelle and found this list by way of >searching for information about my house. >I am impressed with the resourcefullness of the folks >on this list, and your attention to detail. >I am also surprised by the dead ends these historical >searches can lead one to - for instance, the NEw >Rochelle Historical Society listed on the NYGenWeb - >the phone is disconnected and web search doesn't find >any other contact info for them. >So, I am asking for some suggestions regarding the >original construction of my house - where besides the >building dept and the title search might I look for >info? 3. My beloved family home in Watertown, NY, is still standing. Sold to others, I still consider it MY house as it was built when I was 2 and remember being very excited when we went to check its progress. I decided to make a doll house replica of it. Since I haven't been inside it for years, I had no idea of measurements. I wrote the Building Dept of Watertown and the connected me to some office where they still had the blueprints of the house. What a find! Doll house was built, enjoyed, and is now setting in the Co. Historical Bldg.
