I work near the Bronx addresses you list - I could drive by one day and take a look at the builidings. I did that a few years back when my elderly aunt gave me the address where she was born in the Bronx - she described the building and it is still standing! ( but the haunted house around the corner was no longer standing) The Mount Vernon addresses are also not very far - so let me know how urgently you need this info and I will try and search for you. Carol, Enter the addresses into Mapquest and see if they are there first, if not then you will need to hunt for old maps. Judy ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
I have a few family addresses - Bronx, NY my two Great-grandfathers were butchers in the 1880 to 1920 time period- John Schulz - butcher is listed at 811 Cortland Ave, Bronx, NY Fernand Hirsch - butcher is listed at 804 Melrose Ave. Bronx, NY Are either of these areas still the same or have they been torn down for renewal? My guess is that the families lived over the shops. And I would love to get a photo of the stores if they are still there, does anyone know the nearest cross street to these addresses if I have to order a old photo from the city? My Great-grandfather Joseph Dickinson, census 1900 is listed at 10 South 10th Ave, City of Mount Vernon, NY - does anyone know if this address is still there? Again a cross street would be helpful if I need to order a old photo from the city. Thanks, Carol L. Heap

John: You mentioned that you go to Familysearch.org and order Certificates for $2.00. Could you possibly tell me in baby steps how you go about ordering them? I went to the site you mentioned and I didn't see anything about getting certificates. Bill Forshay - San Antonio, TX ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Bill, Below is part of email I sent out before to the list. Hope it helps you. If you still need more help PLEASE just ask, I'd love to share what ever I too learned from the list. June :-) P.S. not "John" - ha ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is what I did, first have to get the certificate number. I found them on http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm and http://www.germangenealogygroup.com/otherdb.stm and http://www.stevemorse.org/ In their VITAL records section. You copy all the information you find (names, date, where it took place & certificate number). Then you go to the LDS site http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp This is the section I used as my family all were in NY http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localityhitlist&columns=*%2C0%2C0&PLACE=New+York&PARTOF=New+York&prePLACE=New+York&prePARTOF=New+York Go to the borough that you are interested in & look under vital records - NOT - indexes. Click on marriage certificates or death certificates & etc. Click on upper right hand corner - View Film Notes. Scroll & check for your date & where your certificate number you got from the sites above, fits in & then it's the FHL number on the far right that you have to use to send out to the FHC on that "Request for Photocopies" form. For $2.00 you can't miss - it's worth taking the chance to see if they are yours or not. Out of the 8, I sent for - 4 were my family - 1, I put in the wrong certificate number in - 3 I don't think are mine, but waiting to find more proof. I wish you good luck, Cliff. If I could help you more just ask (like I did to others, as I was scared not knowing "how" to do it - but with the list help, it turned out easy). June :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Request For Photocopies - Form You can print out on both sides of one sheet of paper. the front page you put your name & address - email address & phone #. On the back side (second sheet) under "General Microfilm or Microfiche". There are 9 columns 1 - you put the long # from the right side of the LDS film page (like 1955887) 2 - leave blank - unless you want to order several of the same certificate 3 - Name of individual 4 - Is self explanatory 5 - Is self explanatory 6 - Date of event 7 - Place of event (like Bronx, NY) 8 - leave blank 9 - Would be the certificate number of the event you found (like I did on the Italian site & other great sites out there).
Hi Shelley Cardiel, I have Jennings in my family. My Paternal Grandmother's sister Gladys Boyce married a Roy Jennings. Roy's parents were Nathan Jennings and Emma Moody. I have forwarded your email to my cousin that is a Jennings and an avid family history researcher to see if this is her family. Thanks for posting this hopefully it is our family. Hi Charles, Thanks. It certainly sounds similar. I suspect that the Surbraney I'm trying to place was given a family name/surname for her first name.....so common back then. On the other hand if she was Romanian that could simply have been a regular given name in that country. Maureen ----- Original Message ----- From: "C. Barbara: Our Gardner/Garner family DNA is a 67 match for the LaMar family of Lille, France. But we have no paper work to make a connection. Do you know anything about this? We have no idea where our family originated. Just showed up in NC in 1775. I've "rescued" and old marriage certificate belonging to Mr. John STOOTHOFF of Brooklyn, NY and his bride Miss Amanda F. JENNINGS of New York City, NY. The couple was married on the 2nd of Aug 1854 at the Norfolk Street Baptist Church in New York City with the officiating Pastor being M. L. ARMITAGE. The certificate was placed in an envelope with the name Mrs. J. STOOTHOFF and the words "Marriage Certificate" written on the front of the envelope. Based on limited research I was able to locate census information regarding this family: 1860 census of New York City, NY: John STOOTHOFF, age 31, a Clerk, born NY Amanda STOOTHOFF, age 30, born NY Harry STOOTHOFF, age 5, born NY Eunice JENNINGS, age 25, born NY 1900 census of Mt. DONIGAN, son-in-law, age 49, born Oct 1850, married 5 years, born NY, parents born NY/NJ, a Tobacco Merchant Mary J. DONIGAN, dau-in-law, age 40, born Jan 1860, married 5 years, no children, born NY, parents born NY Elizabeth DONIGAN, granddau, age 16, born Feb 1884, born NY, parents born NY, at School Harry DONIGAN, grandson, age 14, born Oct 1885, born NY, parents born NY, at School Elizabeth DONIGAN, lodger, age 71, a widow, born Dec 1828, 1 child/1 living, born NJ, parents born Ireland/England +2 additional lodgers I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
