    1. Re: [NYWESTCH] Nick/Pet names for Ellen
    2. Brian Shelley
    3. Barbara, Due to the closeness in origin between the names Ellen, Helen, and Eleanor, the following appear to have been fairly common in usage for each: 1) "Ellie" as a diminutive 2) Limited-to-moderate interchangeable usage of Lena, Aileen, Eileen, Elaine, Eleanor, Ellen, Lanna (and one might think, Lana), Lenora, Nora 3) The Irish tended to use Nell, Nelly, and Nellie as nick/pet names for Ellen. Hope this helps. Brian

    3. Bill -- you didn't give the name of the person who wrote the will and you didn't give the date of writing the will and of its probate. This information might help others to help you identify these folks. I believe an indenture is a deed, so it would most probably be filed with county land records, probably at the county courthouse. Here's another will that might possibly help -- In his will, dated 15 Feb 1792, probated 13 May 1805, John Kniffin, Senior, of Rye, devised to wife ----- the use of one third of lands [etc,] to revert to sons Elisha, John, Isaac, William, Hackaliah, and Nathan; mentioned son Caleb; all lands to be divided among the first mentioned six sons when Nathan, youngest son, arrived at age of 21; "When my daughters get married, I order the family if they are able to assist them to some things." 3. Looks as if his wife is claiming no right to his estate except her legal right of dower (which he can't wiggle out of)....and also looks as if he doesn't have the cash to give her at the time of the reading of his will. Isaac Kniffen might have been a relative who lent dowry money to her father and thus would have a legal claim if it hadn't been paid back. I have no idea if these claims were filed at the time of their execution. Maybe you can Google "indenture Tripartite" . It sounds like a three party indenture.....wife, her father and Isaac against estate of the husband. 3. Thanks, Brian. I saw that same explanation online when doing my own research......just never had the occasion to meet/know of any "Mary/ Polly personally......several Elizabeth/Polly though including in my own family. My name is supposed to be an alternative for "Mary" (Gaelic) but I've never used the name Mary for myself and never will. My mother named me Maureen because she liked that particular name (her favorite movie star at the time I was born) and quite uncommon when I was growing up.....only 2 Maureens in a school of 600+. 1. [NYWESTCH] Mary/Polly origins
    2. Brian Shelley
    3. As one who has a Mary/Polly in my own lines, I've always been curious as to the origin. In reading recent posts, I am apparently not the only one. So...I did a little checking... Mary is the English form of the Latin name "Maria", which means "beloved" (most likely owing it's origin and meaning to the Bible). In England, the name "Molly" came to very common usage as a derivation of "Mary" (I would venture a guess that such was due to English/Scot/Irish language patterns and intricacies), and has as its meaning the same "beloved" as Maria/Mary. At some point in time, the M from "Molly" and P from "Polly" became commonly interchangeable. Hence, we have a proggression from Maria to Mary to Molly to Polly. Not very scientific, I know. Just thought I'd throw it out for general consumption and discourse. Brian

    3. Hi! I got a lead (from the IGI) that suggested that my Eliz. Dutcher of Putnam County, New York was the daughter of the above two adults. Since I haven't had any luck finding her parents in Putnam or Dutchess County, I thought that this was worth exploring... Elizabeth was born October 3, 1797. She married John Bailey on Feb. 13, 1813 in Philipstown, NY She died August 24, 1885. This information is from John Bailey's pension records from the War of 1812. Thanks for any suggestions or leads... Amy

    3. I have the book "Names, Names, & More Names - Locating Dutch Ancestors in Colonial America" by Arthur C.M. Kelly (1999). He worked with a lot of Dutch names as he transcribed Eastern New York Dutch and Lutheran church records for over 60 books. According to him, Dercktje/Dercktie and Dirckje/Dirkje and variations mean Theodora. In the book there is no name beginning with Di- or De- which translates to Dorothy. Most begin with Do-, a few with Du-, the closest being Dortje. It is a valuable book if you don't mind the pages falling out of this poorly-glued paperback. Cliff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
