    3. How about learning to speak, read and write English as superbly as our founding father's did, or even as weel as the men and women of the 1800's. My husband had a woman at work, who was a Phi Beta Capa grad, write a resignation letter to him and there were something like 20 gramattical errors in it; at this time, in any class, you only have to write so that someone can make sense of it; and you don't have to know how to spell correctly. When I went to school we could not even use a pen until we wrote well with a pencil and every teacher expected corrected gramatical errors.. 3. Down here the municipalities had to pass ordinances that all businesses have a sign in English so that the police and foreman can find the right places. The old Mom-and-Pop businesses are all Korean owned now--delis, gas stations, nail places of course, etc., etc. The supermarkets closest to me which ever way I go are Korean. The old Jewish Community Center and the biggest synagogue are now Korean churches. One has a small sign Sunday 1 PM English service, the other Sunday 1 PM Spanish service. Then of course there are all the doctors, etc. More and more professional buildings by the hospital are Korean, Chinese or Japanese. We truly are multicultural. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. 3. We have a such an awful school system they need something like the Spanish immersion program to coax middle class kilds into the school. That and the outrageous price of private schools. They now want $23,000 for elementary school--the same school where I sent my kids for a thousand. Middle class kids have long avoided the Englewood public schools, but my daughter has 4 children--you do the math. Hence they are in the public schools taking odvantage of whatever they have to offer. Learning Spanish prevents total boredom, as they are all well ahead of grade level. 3. That was before centralization I assume. Salt Point students now attend Arlington or Hyde Park according to boundaries. I had a 4H leader back in the fifties who told us she rode horseback to Poughkeepsie High from Poughquag in order to get a high school diploma back when she was a girl. 3. My niece teaches 5th grade in Arlington School District....at the Beekman Elementary School. I wonder why little kids are so interested in learning Spanish. When Iwas in high school practically everyone groaned and complained because they had to have 2 yrs of Latin if continuing on to college or going into Nursing. I personally loved Latin and majored in it in college. Our school systems up here are mostly very good by today's standards but all would fall short of what I learned when I was in school way back when. 3. My youngest grandchild will be 12 next week and as far as I know has had no "Spanish immersion" in Arlington School District here in Dutchess County. My older grandson had none either in Hyde Park or Arlington. My granddaughter on the other hand speaks fluent Spanish because she took Spanish as a major. I too would resent having Spanish or any other subject shoved down my kindergartener's throat .....but then again I would have been at the school raising Hell......as a taxpayer I have the right to open my mouth. So many of today's parents are such sheep...except for my son who does not allow my grandson to be pushed around by adults.....in school or out. 3. When I went to school it was never necessary to send anyone home because they didn't speak English. Even later on when the German girl I mentioned and her brother came over here they learned to speak English just fine. He was 6 yrs old and in a short time spoke English with NO accent. She was 15 and spoke with a very slight accent for a couple of years. Ay home they had to speak German, or Russian, or Polish all of which they had learned to speak fluently in Europe because their mother never learned a word of English and their father was not far behind. 3. The Spanish immersion program in which my grandchildren participate is not "shoved down anyone's throat." There is great competition to get into the prgram. All my grandchildren (4 of them) are accelerated, and a poor school system is made tolerable by the fact that at least they are learning fluent Spanish. The one who just finished first grade alternated weeks of instruction--one week all in English, the next all in Spanish. He entered the program at the last possible grade, as they moved in with me last summer. After 1st grade it is closed to new students, so the the 4th and 5th graders couldn't take it. However, I must repeat, participation is highly competitive and no one is in the program whose parents don't want them there. PS. My niece teaches Earth Science in Arlington Barbara L. de Mare, Esq.
