Judy, this IS genealogy.....it's family history.....a look at the past in comparison to the present. Mine too, Marilyn. Sue, we were not allowed to use an "ink pen" until 6th grade, then we had to use it for all English compositions..... so we had 3yrs to practice for 8th grade Regents (6th,7th and 8th) when we would be required to write ALL English Regents exams in INK. .....meaning NO mistakes because "scratch outs" meant lost points. You are absolutely right Ed....and that's why we were required to take Latin back then. Something like 75% of English words are Latin derivatives...maybe more!! I took 3 yrs of Latin in high school ....Latin 4 was not offered...then majored in Latin in Albany State Teachers' College after high school. When I went back to collage in 1981 for Nursing I went full time days with all the new high school grads. I was appalled at their ignorance of their native tongue and of course they knew NOTHING about medical terms (so important in Nursing) because they had no background in Latin. My Freshman English Professor in DCC when I went back in 1981 told me after the first class that "I was a joy to have in class". She went on to say that kids today are taught nothing compared to when she and I went to school....she was absolutely right. I could hardly believe the essays they wrote....pathetic!! I'm finding nowadays too that Geography is not taught in most of the schools. I remember when I was in grade school the huge flat map of the world next to the blackboard.....rolled up only when school was closed.....and the enormous round globe on a stand in the library. School kids and young adults for the most part haven't a clue as to what a map looks like.....or which country abuts which, etc. Maureen ----- Original Message ----- From: <GWGEHoyt@aol.com> To: <nywestch@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2007 11:15 AM Subject: Re: [NYWESTCH] Ramblings about Dutch >I had two years of Latin in High School and it has been a help to me > throughout my whole life. > George > > > ************************************** > Get a sneak peek of > the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour > *************************************** > Have you checked out the Westchester County GenWeb site yet? > http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywestch/ > *************************************** > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NYWESTCH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I realize that my remarks might not reflect those of everyone on the site. I got to thinking that maybe through our memories and discussions we will come up with some interesting solutions, if we continue tro discuss what is going on right now that is so distressing to all of us. (It is giving me some ideas for my thesis.) I really appreciate hearing everyone's viewpoints. Mine represent my own feelings about the subject, which certainly seem to be the same as others. My thoughts about solutions might be different, but I am sure we all have important things to contribute. Sue
Most of our gas stations and Mini-Marts, etc.are owned by Pakistanis. They all speak English ;otherwise they would get no business.None of us locals speak Arabic dialects and don't intend to learn.LOL. Most of the cab companies are being taken over by Jamaicans (the few guys that aren't drug dealers). They are operating on a shoestring and work their tails off. They all speak English too or would get no business, although they speak Spanish among themselves. We have a small legal Mexican population.....families mostly. They too work very hard and expect no favors from the locals....and that includes learning English so they can get jobs and navigate stores etc. We also must have a fair number of illegal Mexicans here too like elsewhere but they are surely not advertising their status nor calling attention to themselves by making demands. All of our "foreign" doctors learned English in their country of origin....some with heavy accents, of course. So too for the IBMers brought over to the area IBM plants. I have several friends fron India who learned "English immersion" in their own country in elementary school. One close friend (Master's educated) says EVERYBODY who is educated ar all is expected to speak fluent English. She speaks English with a British accent for she was taught by Brit teachers in India. I just have to tell everyone that I heard David McCollough speak at a nearby university a few years ago. He talked so much about Washington, that I wrote him a letter telling him about a little, somewhat unknown book, written about the upbringing of Washington and what went into the making of his character. I thought it would interest him. He wrote me a thankyou note on vellum paper, with a fountain pen, signed by himself, and it had a lovely embossed address at the top. I thought that was so wonderful. I told him the man who wrote the book, "The Making of George Washington," wrote it "because the world needs Washington again." David said that he has spent so much time researching these men that he feels like he is from that century. We need more men like David McCollugh and George Washington. Our young people need to know, and we need to know what went into the development of such a great man like Washington- the little book is available on the net from Patriotic Education Inc, and was my first introduction to a man who was declared to be the best man produced in a 1000 year period of history. I bet those of us who love to do family research can find ways to use it to interest young people in history, geography, culture, language, etc. I had a lousy experience with history classes in school, but doing family history has sparked my interest. There are lots of ways to do this, but it isn't easy unless you live in a culture that respects these things. Even if a minority of us are able to do something about the situation, that is very important. Since most children arent book oriented, then good historical vidoes or visual media can be helpful to start them on the right track. At least we can leave a good legacy as an example. I live in the West, but grew up in a small town near NYC ( Old Greenwich, Conn.). I lived on that coast most of my life, and there is so much historical there to see, that that is another way- family trips to see these things. About the Spanish problem- the only way to change the problem is to change laws, and it seems that it has become a precident. When something becomes a precident, it is hard to fight that. So maybe you have to work with individual children caught in this situation, I don't know. I heard a lawyer lecture and say that the best way to destroy the Constitution is to hav the UN make a precident, and then all other nations follow through on adopting that. We are in difficult times, but there must be some solutions. Sue

Hi List: I was stationed in Northern Japan in the late 1960's. We lived off base right below the Japanese High School. There were 4 Japanese high school girls that used to come twice a week to talk to my wife. They would just talk about every day things. In Japan they have to be able to speak conversational English in order to go to college. They learned text book English in school. Since this does relate to our interest in preserving our heritage, I think we ought to discusss what we can do about the situation, rather than keep complaining. Anyone have any ideas? Personally I think the public schools have become a lost cause, but that may be a negative viewpoint that is incorrect. I am taking a masters degree from a college that teaches like George Wythe mentored the founding fathers, such as Jefferson. When I read their undergraduate degree, I was really upset that I had not had the opportunity to go there to school or have a similar education. I would have had a real well rounded education of value. I think one little solution is reading good books in a family and as individuals. We all have things we can do ourselves to improve. Maureen asked if the Dutch pronounce their W like a V as the Germans do. On another mailing list, someone had written that the sounds were not identical in the two languages. I have a Dutch friend named Willem who was a teacher, so I asked him that same question a few years ago. Their pronunciation is as a VW, he said. To say the English letter V, as in veal, we start a 'hum' then push the bottom lip away from the teeth while saying an EE sound. The V can come in front of other vowels as in vat or vine. To make the VW sound you should pick a vowel sound to use with it. To say Will as VWill, you would put your teeth on the top of your bottom lip and start to 'hum' the first part of the V sound. Then push the lips away from the teeth while saying a WI sound. A few years ago I spent a lot of time writing a webpage on how Americans would pronounce Dutch words, especially names. Although I can pronounce German rather well, I do not know Dutch pronunciation. At various times, I asked four Dutch speaking people to pronounce some words for me. I could not put on paper what I was hearing, so I abandoned the project when it was about 95% complete. I thought it would be useful for genealogists to realize that Catarina, Catharina, Cataryna, and Catherine would have all been pronounced the same by a Dutch person (COT-uh-REE-nuh), and therefore they could be thought of as all the same name when sorting through records looking for an ancestor. The early spelling variations were frequently created by the person writing down the name, and what was written depended on that person's education and primary language (English, Dutch, German). The Albany area of New York State was settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s. Surprisingly, Dutch was still spoken in many Albany homes after 1800, and business was still conducted in Dutch in 1800, although I think that government business was entirely in English. The Dutch language did not survive as long in Westchester County. Albany was much more isolated from New York City where the English had the greatest influence. Albany's isolation was due to the fact that there were no roads between the cities for a very long time. Traffic and trade was by sail boat which was impossible in Winter and slow during the other seasons. The portion of the Hudson River between the cities is tidal, which causes the water to travel toward NYC part of the day (falling tide), then flow back toward Albany later (rising tide). It is not like a normal river where you could expect the flow to take the boat downstream. The back flow toward Albany is a real benefit when sailing in that direction, of course. The isolation meant that the Dutch language could flourish in the Albany area. The Reformed church records were in Dutch for a long time. Reformed church sermons were in Dutch even after 1800 in Albany. In 1815 in two Reformed Churches in Albany, there was a need for two sermons each Sunday, one in Dutch and one in English. For genealogical research in the Albany area, it would be helpful to know how the Dutch pronounced names. For example, if an English woman married a Dutch man and got married in a Reformed Church, her name could be spelled in a Dutch way in the marriage register, but the pronunciation of the name would be the same for the Dutch writer/scribe as it was for the English woman. Spelling differences may not be as important as they first seem. Cliff Lamere
Even though we are off topic, I think we are on topic. We are talking about the legal loss of our language and culture to others. I have found that the oldest historical books are the best to read; they are not prejudiced or interpretive, they are better written, they are free from humanistic values, and they use superior English. I find them really fascinating and informative as they were written closer to the events about which you want to understand. You notice, also, when you read old records, how well some people wrote- almost calligraphically. This clear writing precedes from a disciplined individual, and preserves history better. Genealogy and family history are about the conservation of records and history from the point of view of the family. It adds to history and connects you to it. If students have no knowledge of their own culture, language, and history, how can they relate to the past at all? How could they write decent journals recording their lives and the lives of their families? How can they run the country with a sense of its founding purpose, and with no understanding of what we represent, or at least used to represent- with no sense of history or culture ? I am reading a very interesting book called "The Fourth Turning." It explains that there are repeating cycles throughout history that are very predictable. You can, if you understand these cycles, see where we are in our own historical cycle and prepare yourself and your children for the future. The American public, the authors explain, have bought the concept of linear history- which means that history is simply a series of disconnected events, and that things always improve. This eliminates any understanding of how our present relates to the past and affects the future. When the linear events become crises events, people tend to think that the line is going down or getting worse and not improving and they have nothing from the past to relate to, or to know how to interpret, understand, or influence the present and future. We are in a period where we need to create outstanding young individuals to face the upcoming events or our cycle. One very important spiritual leader said that the Spanish population is increasing faster in this country than any other and it will be the cause of great problems in the future. You don't lose your identity when you live here, if you learn English. My ancestors probably spoke their original language as well as English, like most of ours, but they were proud to be Americans. I am, too, and I respect all nationalities. I have lived in other countries, and learned their language; it was helpful to have friends who also spoke my language, to assist me. I think we are headed for trouble with what has been happening due to illegal immigration, and no legal need for assimilation. Sue

If I had children, I would home teach them. Children that are home taught develop an interest in learning, and become self motivated.Their parent's can discern their learning style and thereby assist them better. They don't become "socialized" so that they relate to their peer group's values more than those of their family. They are farther advanced than other students, and spend less time studying. I would never send a child to school today - it is too confusing to them and most of them lose their interest in learning pretty quickly. Also, schools are now dangerous places, and I would be frightened to send a child to a school. It wasn't that way when I grew up, but the things that go on in schools now horrify me. My husband sub. teaches and the students are about as civilized as a group of mad gorillas. They'll be ready when Spanish is the "official" language ot ther USA! Were lost. By the way "rowdyrebel was aB-17 Flying Fortress in WW2. My uncle flew 2 missions in that plane before he shot down on 13 April 1944. There is great competition to get into the prgram. All my grandchildren (4 of them) are accelerated, and a poor school system is made tolerable by the fact that at least they are learning fluent Spanish. The one who just finished first grade alternated weeks of instruction--one week all in English, the next all in Spanish. He entered the program at the last possible grade, as they moved in with me last summer. After 1st grade it is closed to new students, so the the 4th and 5th graders couldn't take it. However, I must repeat, participation is highly competitive and no one is in the program whose parents don't want them there. > > PS.
