You should try old handwriting in German!? I'm doing German Church records from the early 1800s and they're making my eyes cross... I've got an Ellen who was "Nellie".? An Irish lass. I think there were so many nicknames or pet names prior to 1900 because of old naming traditions that made for duplications within the same household. Otherwise, what would be the point of that grand Irish tradition of calling men named John, "Jack"? Or why bother with Harry for Henry?? I have a German cook book that talks about the naming tradition for girls.? In the writer's family, I believe it was either her mother or grandmother's family that ended up with 5 girls named Elizabeth so they all went by their middle name. While ramblings on Dutch language and culture may be relevant to thre board, it seems that the discussion has degenerated into a xenophobic discussion of other ethnic groups. The lack of assimilation by some ethnic groups will definitely change the cultural landscape of the United States. but is this an appropriate venue for discussion. It would seem that contact with your elected representatives would be more useful. My pedigree is quite diverse, Irish French, Canadien(Queebec), Iriquois, and Jewish. Just a reminder that the purpose of this list is to discuss genealogy relating to Westchester county in New York state. So, folks, the discussions found under the subject of "Dutch Ramblinges" or "Ramblings about Dutch" are no longer a topic for this list. If you want to discuss the political situation in America, then please go to those lists which specialize in that subject. Let's get back to genealogy which is why we all came here. NY Westchester Mailing List Administrator http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/NY/westchester.html
I would think we would be able to discuss the Dutch ramblings subject on a mailing list concerning American History. In looking at mailing lists, there are all sorts for specific periods, but none for general Amer. History. Could we start one? Sue

Barbara- I know some children do. But the majority don't. I only have step grandchildren and don't have much input. I give them books every year, even though they don't want them, hoping that eventually they will get the point. You are lucky to have that opportunity. Sue-- This got interesting. I also lived in Japan for 3-1/2 years in the 1958-1962 time period. I was in the USAF and we lived 11 NW of Tokyo in Grant Heights Military Housing Annex. I didn't learn too much Japanese, but what I did learn, I still remember quite well. In my second career, I was back over there a lot on two and three day business trips. Tho Japanese that I learned many years ago still got me around. I am one of those Americans who doesn't live in Tokyo, but can still get around on the trains system unaided. When I was there in 1988, there was a paperbook entitled "Tokyo Survival Guide." It was interesting because if still reflected the situation of many years earlier. All of our "foreign" doctors learned English in their country of origin....some with heavy accents, of course. So too for the IBMers brought over to the area IBM plants. There are still some book-oriented children, Sue. My grandchildren are among them. If they see adults reading, they are more apt to read. Plus--that is the only legal excuse to stay up late. They devour books. This mean grandma only allows educational TV and insists on at least a book a week, depending on the size. Last week I was assigning the 7 year old a book a day. Every night when I came home he had read what I told him to--much to my shock! But he loves studying geography, so to get me to teach him, he reads the stuff I tell him to read. My daughter homeschooled until each child had a firm foundation ijn reading in math--about 2nd grade. The younger ones were homeschooled less, but read earlier as they had learned when their older siblings were being taught. Once they read well, they can learn anything else. Now my daughter says she has given her children their foundations, and she has gone back to school. Actually, my children are 34 ans almost 38, and both are in graduate school. My son should finish his Ph. D. by June, and my daughter just started an M.S.-MBA program run jointly by UMDNJ and Rutgers. She just finished her B.S. with a 3.8 cum while rasing 4 children. She tells anyone who will listen not to be satupid like her, and go through college when you are supposed to. Now I am rambling--sorry. barbara Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. I need to go out and do errands, but wanted to make one more comment. I guess I am unwinding from a workshop of classes I just attended from a week. The discussion is so interesing, but I have participated too much, maybe. I recently visited NYC to reseach. No one in the stores could speak English to me. It was like when I lived in Belgium and Japan, but this was in America. In Begium I relearned French, but I could never learn all of the languages now spoken in NYC and other major cities. Each year when we returned for our vacation ( we were gone ten years in Belgium and Japan), I heard more and more foreign languages in the supermarkets. It was amazing to see the change each year. Bill- I lived in Japan for four years. You can talk to an English speaking Japanese person for a long time and suddenly realize that they don't know what you have said. Their culture is to always agree, which means- "keep talking," not -"I understand you." I loved living there, and had a lot of really funny experiences because of this problem. But they really do want to learn English, and the problem is that English and Japanese have absolutely nothing in common, which makes it really difficult. I love my Japanese friends and once you have one, you have one for ever. The funniest book I used to own was called "Gems of Japanized English." I wish I had it still, as I would laugh so hard reading it that I would hurt all over. They are a fun people and love anything American. Bet you had a great time there.
