    2. Robert Vail
    3. Just as a final parting shot on this subject. I have just come across some transcribed letters between Alfred Vail, the inventor of the Morse Code and co-inventor of the telegraph, during his final 10 years of life where he dedicated himself to compiling the Vail family genealogy. In one letter, dated 12/31/1851 to Isaac Vail in Verbank, Dutchess County, NY, he addressed this very same subject that we are discussing. In his response letter to Isaac Vail, he stated "The papers concerning your Grandfather, (CPT Israel Vail), father and others are precious documents. Endeavor, if you can, to collect the incidents of his life. They tread the monotony of the genealogical record and are very valuable." This says it all for me. Robert S. Vail Titusville, FL -----Original Message----- From: nywestch-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nywestch-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of GWGEHoyt@aol.com Sent: Monday, August 27, 2007 6:23 PM To: nywestch@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYWESTCH] Genealogy vs. Family History Friends, To me, it's family history, not just genealogy. Genealogy would only record events. What about the ancestor who was such an alcholic that he became paralyzed? What about the successful ancestor who had some 20 land dealings in Stamford CT in the late 1700's and early 1800's, to then die as a destitute pauper in 1836. What about the ancestor who had a stroke and his widow toiled over his daily life? What about the ancestors in Poland with 9 children and all die but four. And three of those four immigrate into the USA in the 1870's. When the widow left behind dies, her remaining daughter was destitute and even the fee for the church funeral was waived by the Parish Priest. What about the stories about the Polish in Nebraska who built a lean-to to live in on the south side of a hill where the sun would strike it the most for heat? And the snakes, and tornadoes, etc. The loneliness of the Nebraska prairie made many a woman cry out for companionship. What about the Irish brogue that you would never find in B/M/D records. What about the Irish Potato famine in the 1850's? Many of these stories were verbally carried on down generation-to-generation and end up in Family Histories. Verbal stories are very much a part of the whole picture. Would you find these on a genealogy chart? To me, genealogy is only about the family tree. Family history is about the family tree PLUS all of the personal stories that accompany it. Did the actual head of household give the responses? It should be a family member, but sometimes the census taker might get the information from a neighbor or an employee. That is why you should only use the census as a guide. If most of the census years ages are close to what they should be, then I would think they are pretty accurate, but if one seems way off, consider someone other than family member guessed on the names and ages and birthplaces. 3. Thanks........that is what I was hoping. I ran into a "bump in the road" on a census and the only conclusion I could come up with was that one of the children gave the information and thus is was somewhat skewed. 3. My thanks to Judy & Judy. I took Judy Merritt's advice and phone the Field Library. Judy Wolf was correct on the details. The Field home did have a chapel on the property that sat quite a few people. Apparently the marriage I mentioned took place within it. Until today I thought Fieldhome was a village or other locality. It's nice to have that straightened out. Cliff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Who answered the questions? Whoever was home when the enumerator came to the door--and that means not out in the fields, in the barn, etc. Sometimes it was one of the kids! Sometimes it was Grandma--who only know data on one side of the family. Often the enumerator recorded his information as notes--had his wife with good penmanship do the actual record later at home. As with many things, it was not a purely mechanical record--only as 'mechanical' as a human with related frailties can make it. I seem to recall reading somewhere that there was a Chapel on the property and that early on it was a rest home. I called a friend in Peekskill just now and she says part of the building is still being used as nursing home. 3. I have a marriage record for someone who got married at "Fieldhome.Yorktown" in 1895. A person working for the Town of Yorktown said it was now a nursing home and used to be the home of a Field family. I'm not sure that has anything to do with the place mentioned in the marriage record, but maybe so. I found this online about a man in about 1900. "He is also President of the Board of Trustees of the Field Library, Peekskill; Trustee and Treasurer of the Field Home, Yorktown;" That sounds like the Yorktown employeee could be correct. Anyone know? Cliff

    2. Thanks Barbara and Judy for your input. As far as I know the family were Congregationalists. The ancestors were founders of the Church in Middletown, Upper Houses. I am subbed to the MA Berkshire List and am the researcher for SAVAGE listed on the board, although I am 2000 miles away and don't get back that way much anymore. My most recent stay for fall was in Westchester in 2002, going there in August and leaving in December after a bit of snow. I was glad to get back to the southwest and warmer winters. I did grow up in New York, but after over 20 years here. I am thoroughly acclimated to the area. I have been working on later generations of the family but will eventually get back to this time period. I need to finish my work for DAR for Hiel SAVAGE first. Thanks again for your suggestions and Judy enjoy the garden tour, too early for the fall foliage, but still good weather. 3. If I may butt in? I have Bacons who left Middletown CT for Lanesboro, MA Nathaniel Bacon gave land in Lanesboro to 2 of his sons . There was also a CT resident named John Bourne [an in-law] who scouted land in Ohio, returned and got several families to join him in I think first, Washington County...they were there in the first census to statehood for Ohio in 1803. Mine went to Scioto, then Ross county--or boundaries changed. Mine remained in Ohio until Illinois was approaching statehood, then went to Alton, IL in 1817-1818. It's my guess the bounties being offered to boost the population count were enticing settlers--I know Ohio's was "No taxes for 5 years". I will have to dig out that research--been trying to get past a couple of other stumbling blocks, so want to be sure about my information. I'm closing down my desk right now--I will get back as soon as I can. I also want to find out if Joel Bacon married Polly Wheaton (Whitten) in CT or MA. I think CT because the Bacons were pretty well entrenched in CT for about a century. Again, the time thing--get going until something interrupts and then the 'thread' gets lost... You could try subscribing to the Berkshire list and asking them, they might know. Many times one person or family got the wanderlust, other family members followed, sometimes groups of families for the same town would up and leave together. I guess there was safety in numbers. Look and see what industries up there might be have drawn them to go to that region. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~maberksh/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~maberksh/) there is a researcher in Lanesborough for Savage. If you can ever have a chance The Berskshires is great place for an Autumn vacation. There is also a NARA in Pittsfield and a wonderful library in Pittsfield too. The folks at that NARA are the nicest people. I'll be up there in 2 weeks, but on a garden tour, I doubt if they would have the answers you need there!
