Bill -- If you send me your email address I will send you my Genealogical Report on William Forster and his descendants. It is the sum of many years work and I prefer not to make it available to persons who have no interest in this family. First of all I would like to thank those of you who are answering my questions about being a family historian. Your answers have been fascinating, amazing and very helpful. I would like to add one important question- # 16) Have you discovered new historical information, or corrected historically accepted information; has your research uncovered information that would add important change our our general present day understanding of history in some area ? Also, I realize that some of the questions need to be reworded so I don't get just a yes or no answer, but some more details. So if I have asked you if you have a better sense of patriotism or a better sense of history or a better sense of your place in history or the family, would you give me some details. Thanks for all of the interesting responses. Tomorrow I will reword the questions so that I can learn more about your experiences as a family historian, as I am getting some fabulous answers from all of you. Thanks, Sue For example on question Do you have an increased understanding of history- would you change it to In what way do you have an increased understanding of history? And in the question- Are you more patriotic, please change it to "In what ways have you become more patriotic? I am realizing some of my questions need only a yes or no answer, so if you could give me some explanations, that would be great. Thanks again, Sue
Please change the subject line to reflect your message. All the messages say Family Historians, and we are missing a variety of surnames and topics. Thanks! Thanks Sue. I will have to put the Greenwich library on my list. I keep wanting to get there anyway, so this should be an added incentive. It isn't that far from where I live in New Jersey. I don't know if this will be any help, but there is a Vasti White Conklin buried in the Terry cemetery. Don't know how they would be related to the Terry family. I do plan on re-researching my ancestor Isaac Van Wart as a result of this exchange of thoughts and ideas. I would like to pass this on though -- I have a copy of a deposition written by John Martine and his son-in-law Marmaduke Forster, to the government requesting reimbursement for the articles stripped from their farm by American soldiers. The document is in storage just now (I live in FL and have suffered damage from hurricanes over the years, so I store my "valuables" during this time of year), so I can't give you the date, but it's a fascinating thing to read! John & Marmaduke hid from who they thought were British soldiers marching up the road to the farm -- they turned out to be American soldiers! Do you see any connection between what those American soldiers did, and Isaac and his companions? One more, then I'll hang it up! I have a letter from my deceased cousin Kent Forster, who was a professor of history at Penn State. He wrote: " In Tarrytown, NY, there is a statue of Isaac Van Wort, another ancestor of Dad's. This statue was erected because he captured the famous British spy Major John Andre. Years ago I discovered in the local archives, that our ancestor, far from being the good Patriot, was a highway bandit who stole Andre's boots. When the boots came off a map of the fort at West Point fell out. Van Wart was probably illiterate, but he passed on the map, and Major Andre, to Washington and was made a Revolutionary hero. Poor Andre was hanged and made a British hero. Frankly, I have more sympathy for Andre." So that's it! This had been interesting, fun, AND has inspired me to keep on digging! Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, and also for discovering that I may have another "cousin" among those who have responded! Cheers, Jean I must however, quote a passage of a letter written to me years ago by my cousin Kent Forster, who was a history professor at Penn State. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

George -- I LOVED your denial of coming from the same line as the Hoyt who teemed up with Benedict in Canada! Hey -- I had the courage to admit being a descendant of a highway robber, and I've stirred up a hornet's nest! I have a murderer in my ancestry too, but I'll not reveal his name! Tee hee! This has been an interesting thread which no one will ever find in the Archives, folks since it is not titled Andre or whatever. Please, please can we have the subject line that apply to the subject matter. It only takes a moment to change it, hit reply and type in a new subject line. Have a nice holiday weekend! Many people in those days were illiterate.....and during the Rev War both side "stole". The English and Hesseins stole from the townspeople and the townspeople and Militia stole back what they could. Barbara- I don't know if this is helpful, but I have been in the Greenwich Library and there are alot of oral histories there. I bought two, as I was raised in Old Greenwich, Conn. Maybe they can be of help to you. It is a very good library. Jean: I have a Marmaduke Forster, b: 1735 the son of William Forster and Jane Barnes. Is this the one you are talking about. If so, could you give me some information on him from there down, his wife and children and so forth. His home in Pleasantville is being restored and will be turned into offices, I believe. There was quite a "to do" about whether to restore the old home or tear it down to build condos, but thankfully, the structure was determined to be sound and so it is being renovated. Yes, Benedict Arnold was loathed, and for good reason! Such a shame though, as he started his career on a positive note and would have gone far had it not been for his flawed attitude in thinking he was not getting the promotions and attentions he thought he deserved. Benedict knew full well that whoever controlled West Point, controlled the river, and whoever controlled the river, controlled the country! We could have all been British now, had it not been for Isaac Van Wart!
