I am not related to you but I have researched the family you describe and I have found many records both in England and in USA for them, such as birth, death and burial places. If you want the information from me, just email me me direct. It is 2 reports long, and not small enough to post here. 1. [NYWESTCH] News: 9/11 Inquiry Released
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Everyone I've met in Metro NYC knew at least one of the sacrificial victims or first responders of the NYC World Trade Center attack of September 11, 2001. Today, the final 28-page document pertaining to the 9/11 investigation was declassified and released to the public, with "lightly redacted" text. "Newly declassified pages from a congressional report into 9/11 released Friday have reignited speculation that some of the hijackers had links to Saudis, including government officials — allegations that were never substantiated by later U.S. investigations into the terrorist attacks. "Congress released the last chapter of the congressional inquiry that has been kept under wraps for more than 13 years, stored in a secure room in the basement of the Capitol. Lawmakers and relatives of victims of the attacks, who believe that Saudi links to the attackers were not thoroughly investigated, campaigned for years to get the pages released." 2. mizscarlettny via
    3. It was about this time, three years ago, that we lost our friend and genealogist extraordinaire, Walter Greenspan. Many thanks to Marie for digging out my original post from Rootsweb's archives. Walter GREENSPAN, of Great Falls, MT and Jerico, NY passed away on 13 July 2013, at 66 years of age, after a sudden illness. Walter was born in Brooklyn, NYC on 20 Dec 1945 to Jack and Beatrice GREENSPAN. Walter was involved in the Jewish community of Great Falls, MT before they knew what matzoh was [He had it shipped from NY.] or had an in-state rabbai. Walter had a keen wit, astute mind, and was formerly a commodities analyst. He is survived by two adult, twin daughters who were his pride and joy. Walter was also involved with Metro NYC Genealogy for the past decase, and was a whiz at finding genealogical repositories for others. We, in Metro NYC will miss him terribly. 1. [NYWESTCH] Charles Waldron and Ellen Tickel Help needed
    2. Brian J Densmore via
    3. Ok, I have uncovered a rather perplexing issue. Charles Waldron 1856, Haverstraw,NY - 1933 (Sussex, NJ) was the son of Calvin Waldron and Mary Youmans He married Ellen "Tickel" (~1855-1922/3) in 1876, had 14 children of whom 5 lived to adulthood. The source of the marriage date comes from my deceased cousin Margaret Kussel McDermett, who's source was from her mother's genealogy notes (Anna Margaret Waldron, Charles' niece). Charles was her father's twin, Thomas. In a census, Elizabeth "Tickle", his mother-in-law, is in his household in Yonkers. He was horseback patrolman from the late 1880s to the early 1900s. He retired to the Lake Hopatcong area. I have an obituary for his son Thomas (1885-1946) indicating Ellen Griefson as his mother. I have an obituary for his daughter Susan Waldron Callan (1887-1967) also indicating Ellen Griefson as Charles wife. A son Charles Waldron, Jr. died in Du Bois, PA between 1952 and 1954. I don't have a death record for him, but know for a fact he was alive in 1951 and dead by 1954. A son George Henry died between 1946 and, apparently, 1967. No death record for him either. It would be in Florida. Probably. Lastly his daughter Mary Ellen "Ella" (also seen as Helen) Waldron Logan also apparently died between 1946 and 1967. But again no death record. No birth or baptism records for any of the children. I'm fairly certain Riker's states Ellen Tickel, but also gives 4 children. I can prove at least 8 of the asserted 14 (from a US Census). So, I have a problem. Elizabeth Tickel, known mother in law. Two children's obits separated by 21 years reporting the same mother, which is not Tickel/Tickle. Since Ellen came over in the 1870s and married Charles in 1878, she won't be in any US Census with her maiden name, unless it's in NY in 1875, but Charles was probably in PA in most of the 1870s. Moving to Yonkers in 1885ish. But Riker's got that name from somewhere. Granted there are lots of blanks and wrong information in Riker's for at least the Waldron clan. My suspicion is Elizabeth Tickel is a remarried widow. Should I use that theory and use Griefson as Ellen's maiden name, along with notes? I have an actual date of marriage, but again the source is from a research note from Charles' niece, and my grandaunt. Unfortunately Anna burned both the Family Bible, and much of her research work in her furnace in her elder years (Alzheimer's). So a good bit is gone. Thanks, Brian

It wasn't just girls. Let us not forget about farming kids off to foster homes. My mother and her siblings were all given over to a foster family in Peekskill, when my grandfather had my grandmother committed. She didn't have the most stable of mental states, due probably from diabetes in part. At least that's the PC story. I won't be outing any skeletons in this post. Not that there are any skeletons to dig up, that is. ;) I'm not sure how it was all worked out. If the courts are involved the records will all be sealed, and you'll no be allowed to look at them lads and lasses. This is NY we're talking about, after all. I'll note, I've seen multiple foster situations in the '30s and '40s in NY. There was also consider shipping kids off to grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. That of course still happens. I ran into a case, yesterday, of one in my own distant family that happened last year! Online Newspapers, digging up the dirt on your family. Oh my. Brian

    3. If your ancestor lived in a house that was still standing circa 1939, you may be in luck. Through FDR's Works Projects program, every building in Greater NYC was photographed in black and white. These are called the WPA Tax Photos. If you ever tried to photograph a NYC building, the streets can be so narrow that you can't capture the entire building in your viewfinder. That's not the case with these WPA shots. I own a few and have seen many more. They are beautiful, clear shots taken by professional photographers. If you have the opportunity, preview the photograph before ordering. 3. My grandmother & her sister are listed on the 1900 Federal census as "inmates" in The House of the Good Shepherd" in Chicago, IL. This was a Catholic institution established in the mid 1800's , managed by Catholic Sisters from St. Louis. Today this institution is still meeting the needs of families. Their early days were some what described as teaching young females "social" graces. I have no doubt that my dear beloved grandmother & her equally cherished sister may well have been "wayward" back in the day. However, I think they were placed in the institution because their father had died in 1895 in Kansas City, MO. & their mother was making her way back to family in Michigan. She was a widow with 5 children & needed a job. Long considered the south village's best kept secret, it has now been discovered, and is much coveted especially since it is perfectly balanced between the Village and Soho. This block has been the home of some of New York's most celebrated artists.
