Here's a fascinating article about historic Jewish cemeteries that are tuck away in unlikely corners of today's Manhattan.>>> http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-news-and-politics/76248/buried These three cemeteries belong to Congregation Shearith Israel, a Spanish/Portuguese synagogue that was established in 1654 and is the oldest Jewish congregation in North America! This was the only Jewish congregation in New York City until 1825. "They are perhaps the most durable legacy of New York City’s long-ago Jewish past. The Shearith Israel congregation was founded by 23 Jewish refugees, descendants of Spanish Jews, exiled during the Inquisition, who fled from Recife, Brazil, after it was taken from the Dutch by the Portuguese. They were fleeing anti-Semitism but were greeted coldly by Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch director-general of the colony of New Netherland." The original Wave Hill mansion was built in 1843 by William Lewis Morris, a NYC attorney, and and later rented by Theodore Roosevelt, American author Mark Twain, and Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini. Ultimately, Robert Moses persuaded the owner to donate it to the City of New York. Today, visitors enjoy the lovely grounds and horticultural wonders. Today's New York Times questions if the resignation of census department director John H. Thompson will impede the 2020 US Census.>>> https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/us/politics/john-h-thompson-quits.html?_r=0 Remember the 1890 NYC Police Census? Then, New York City politicos [including Manhattan and minimal parts of today's Bronx] believed its population was erroneously under-counted in the 1890 U.S. Census. So, in the fall of 1890, the city assigned NYPD officers to the task of recounting its population. The results were supervised on a daily basis and officers made return trips, as necessary. Then, as now, federal funding and congressional representation was dependent upon population numbers. Little did municipal leaders know that most of the 1890 US census would be destroyed in a Commerce Department fire in 1921! I've searched the 1890 NYC Police Census in-person at the NYC Municipal Archives and it's invaluable. Although Ancestry and Family Search provide search engines to it, neither is complete. It is perhaps the most complicated and time consuming census to search, but results are well worth the effort. To search it, you *must* have a street address for your ancestor, then use the Jensen guide to ascertain which book numbers and complimentary microfilm number to search. Just imagine the numbers of immigrants packed into those old tenement buildings. One house address may be found in multiple books and films. No one said genealogy research would be easy! There is a great article in the newest (Jan 2017) issue of the NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD called "Identifying the Families of Lorinah (Brush) (Hait) Olmstead" by Michael G. Hait. First, as the editor says in her editorial, this is a superb article for learning how to research women who marry your male ancestors when there is no direct proof of who they are, so it is worth studying by anyone. I found it interesting for that reason. But second, it is filled with information about related Brushes, Haits (and their various spellings such as Hoyts), Olmsteads, Meads, and many others, including Downeses, of particular interest to me (although after following the name through many records, I use the spelling Downs and Downses) since I descend from Seth Downs and Sarah Lounsbury. These families married and moved back and forth between the Bedford and Pound Ridge, Westchester Co., NY, and Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT, areas in the 17th and early 18th centuries although many eventually moved on to New Jersey, upstate New York, Michigan, and other points west. Does anyone have a current address for Marianne Dunnell who descends from Silas Smith Downs and Lucy Ann Brush in this article? She did a lot of work on the family back around 2000, and perhaps Mr. Hait would like to fill in some gaps with what she passed on to me. I have been unable to reach her with the old webtv.net address, probably long gone. -- Elizabeth
