    3. Check back with them on Monday and we'll see the exact date of the publication. They mentioned 1940 in the talk but I don't recall what the year was on the images that they showed. Regardless, considering the number of people living in NYC at that time, having a free, online version of a phone directory plus the linking to Steve Morse's web site to use the address to obtain the ED will be a great access after the 1940 census is released. ----- Original Message ----- From: "W David Samuelsen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2012 3:28 PM Subject: Re: [NYWESTCH] New tool announced for NYC for 1940 Census > Correction: I meant 1941 city directory to get 1940 residency. > > oops! 1. [NYWESTCH] New tool announced for NYC for 1940 Census
    2. Cathy-0
    3. Last Saturday, March 24, a new tool was announced by the staff of the New York Public Library in preparation for the 1940 Federal Census which becomes available on Monday, April 2 at 9:00 EDT. This new tool is an online 1940 telephone directory for the five boroughs of New York City and will be free to use from their internet web pages. You can search the telephone phone directory for an address of your family in NYC and then click on the small window which allows you to type the address into a search box that then links to the web site of Steve Morse. In linking to Morse's web site, you will then be able to identify the enumeration district (ED) in which the street address is found. Once the 1940 Census becomes available online, the library staff also hopes to eventually link each ED to the first web page of the census showing the pages for that ED in New York City. If so, then this will be an outstanding tool for searching the 1940 census for NYC residents until such time as an index to the census becomes available. The NYPL staff stated that they expect to have new telephone directory tool available *** on Monday, April 2 *** on the Milstein page of the New York Public Library: http://www.nypl.org/milstein So, if you expect to search for family from NYC in the 1940 Federal census, give the NYPL web site a look on Monday. Happy Hunting!
