I think I finally found something. http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/fa/A0200.shtml It's no wonder I couldn't find any online records about this. it looks like two thirds of the original records referenced may have burned up in 1911. ============== "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State" (Comptroller's Office, Albany, 1904) provides name indexes, volume lists, regimental lists, and some samples of records from the original, complete record series. Users are cautioned that roughly two-thirds of the records referenced in this resource were destroyed in the State Capitol fire of 1911. ============== The DAR Application I have is from 1903. So the applicant was probably able to view the originals of them before the fire. I have a research request in at the DAR to see what they have. it looks like there may be indexes on Microfim that survived, but not much else. Grrrrrr. Does anybody have any experience with these records? For those of you struggling to find proof of Patriotism, this could explain much of your trouble. 3. Does anybody know of a Genealogist or Historian that specializes in Philipsburg Manor? I cannot seem to find the answers to wife's family myself, so I am ready to cave in and hire some help. William Yerks and his son Harmen were tenant farmers on the Manor around the time of the Revolution. I am looking for information that will help us prove that they were considered Patriots of the Revolution. I found an old souvenir book that lists them as members of the East Philipsburg Militia, but I cannot seem to find any further info about that. I also found a tree that indicated that William's wife, Catherine, filed for a pension. I cannot find that pension application. Thanks. Philip Hayes Philip L. Her name was Margaret and she died in an automobile accident in New Rochelle, NY in 1916, she was 28 Ralph B. Feriola went to court in order to represent young Margaret's estate. I pieced together page 2 of the probate file to make it easier for viewing here (see the attached). To view the complete probate file, go to Familysearch.org and navigate to "Kings County Estate Files" and Margaret C. Hyland 1917. 1. [NYWESTCH] East Philipsburg Militia Muster Roll found in a Tarrytown Souvenir Book

Author: philiplhayes Surnames: Yerks Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.westchester/7257/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I came across a DAR application that brought me to a book entitled "Souvenir of the Revolutionary Soldier's Monument Dedication at Tarrytown, NY, October 19th, 1894". I found that book as a PDF online. http://play.google.com/books/reader?id=nktGAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA43 In it, there is a Revolutionary War Muster Roll. According to the book, the original Muster Roll was in the possession of a Professor Bashford Dean of New York. In addition to the well known John Yerks (a member of the group of Patriots who captured Major Andre), there are several other Yerks family members from Philipsburg on the Roll. John Yerks Sr. John Yerks Jr. James Yerks, William Yerks I do not see any mention of them (except John) or most of the others on that Muster Roll in any online databases. Does this muster roll exist today? Where? Who has it? Is it authentic? What do you make of the fact that names on this list are not seen anywhere online. My wife's great x 6 Grandfather is the William Yerks mentioned on the roll. Do you think I can use this reference on a DAR application? Thanks. Philip L. Author: vansicklen1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.westchester/7256.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here are two death notices for James' wife Margaret: Brooklyn Daily Eagle Wednesday, March 25, 1931; page 17 DEATHS HYLAND - On March 22, 1931. Margaret Hyland, widow of James Hyland and devoted mother of John Hyland. Funeral from her residence, 161 E. 35th St., Flatbush, on Thursday, March 26, at 9:30 a.m.; thence to St. Catherine of Genoa R. C. Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Brooklyn Standard Union 24 March 1931 Margaret HYLAND, a life resident of Brooklyn died Sunday at her home, 161 East Thirty-fifth street, Flatbush. She was a member of St. Catherine of Genoa R. c. Church where a solemn mass of requiem will be celebrated Thursday by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor John B. GORMAN, at 10 A. M. She was the widow of James HYLAND and three grandchildren. Interment will be at holy Cross Cemetery under the direction of William DUNIGAN & Son, Rogers avenue and Montgomery street. ------------------------ Here is the same Margaret in the NY City death index: Hyland Margaret, 72 y, d. Mar 22 1931, cert # 7695, Kings County, Brooklyn AND these look like they may possibly be her husband and son in the same death index: Hyland James, 32 y, d. Jan 15 1890, cert # 2979, Flatbush, Kings County, Brooklyn Hyland John, 65 y, d. Jun 13 1944, cert # 12552, Kings County, Brooklyn My note: Given that you already know that Margaret was listed as a widow in the 1900 US census for Brooklyn, the above James Hyland in the death index is a good candidate for her husband and given that you already know that their son John V. Hyland was noted as deceased in the "Old Man's Draft Registration" WWII list, the above John Hyland is a good candidate for Margaret's son. Copies of the death certificates and/or the Holy Cross Cemetery interment record may confirm the above information. By the way... you should also note that the address of 161 E. 35th St, Flatbush in Margaret's death notice is the same address given for John V. Hyland in the WWII Draft Registration.
