    1. [NYWESTCH] Naturalization record request
    2. Brian J Densmore via
    3. I'm hoping someone is planning a trip to the County archives and can look up the naturalization for the person I think is my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Patrick Duffy. A naturalization in 1866 for Patrick Duffy might be my ancestor. Either my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, or his son (Patrick Edward). Last First Year Type Archive Number Page No. DUFFY PATRICK 1866 Declaration A-0006(1)S(DD10) 85 DUFFY PATRICK 1866 Petition A-0082(1)S(C2) I'm asking for enough information from those two records to determine if he is indeed one of the above named relatives. Patrick senior came over with at least three children (Ann, John, and Patrick E), according to my current theory. My problems with this that John appears to have been naturalized by 1861, and Patrick E says he was naturalized in 1869. John says he came over in 1852 at the age of 10, and Patrick E says 1870! So Patrick E says he was naturalized before he arrived! Now that's funny! I've never found a naturalization for John in either Westchester or New York. I may have missed something, that was more than a decade ago I made that search. It was also before I knew his father's name. Patrick E stated that he was naturalized in Westchester, NY in 1869. I take that to mean either the town of Westchester or the county. Meaning the record could be in Westchester County, or been handed over to New York City when it swallowed up parts of Westchester Township. I simply don't know, and it's possible Patrick E got it wrong. This statement, by Patrick E was made in 1879 in California. Thanks, Brian

    1. [NYWESTCH] Question about probates
    2. Brian J Densmore via
    3. I have two requests to make. I'll post them in different threads, although both related to the same person. Brief Backstory: ====================================================== After his wife died, my gr-gr-granduncle Patrick Edward "P.E." Duffy, moved to California in 1876 from Mount Vernon/Eastchester, leaving his two surviving daughters with family (at least one daughter with his sister - haven't located who raised the other). He remarried two years later to Julia Sullivan, another Irish immigrant, and had seven children. He died on 30 Mar 1905, leaving a widow and six of those seven children. He left a will and a substantial estate. I'm working on obtaining the will. On, or about, 20 April 1905 letters were issued to the widow. The probate concluded about 22 Feb 1906. There was a fair amount of court activity in the months before that. About a month after the probate, the two daughters gave deeds and blacksmithing tools to the widow's home and the family business in exchange for $600. ====================================================== The question: I've searched the local papers and the papers in NY. I've not found any notices indicating a search for debtors, creditors, and potential heirs. The two daughters in NY, are apparently mentioned in the will. They were involved in the probate, which I'm also seeking the records of. Could be entertaining. I thought it was required to post those notices, but so far nothing. Am I wrong about this, do not all probate cases result in newspaper postings seeking to quiet claims? (Note, I'm not worried about finding out all about the probate. The records are filmed by FHL and the California Archives are cheap to get copies from. In fact it'd be cheaper to get the records from the Archives than to rent even one film.) Brian

    3. Dear Friends, The Westchester County Archives is open just Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Wind-chill & roads permitting, I'm aiming to go there this week. Then, I will complete index cards for the folks who contacted me offlist, and glean names of other potential researcher's of the same surnames. This is an inconspicuous card file, alpha by surname, at the Archives that includes family names and researchers' contact info. [Please view my original post ca 30 Dec 2014.] NOTE: Ancestors who later resided in Bronx & New York Counties, maybe be found earlier here. [Check Wikipedia for Bronx history and boundaries.] WESTCHESTER COUNTY ARCHIVES HOLDINGS http://archives.westchestergov.com/online-indexes-gene Categories on top left of screen> Naturalization, Surrogates (Wills, Estate Inventories), and Marriages. DIRECTORIES are self-searchable by name of town. Not every year,or every town. MAP COLLECTION is extensive. Some may be copied. May all your leads be good ones, Barb

    3. The reason your David Haight e-mail caught my eye is because there are no David’s on the Gedney side of the family - so perhaps Jane and Jonathan named their first child and only son David is because she had a father, brother, or grandfather named David. Miners Accept Scale and Will Return to Work. Steel Wire Plants Resume Operation. ------- CROTON LANDING, N. Y., April 18.—In accordance with the promise made last night by General Roe, in command of the troops, work has been resumed at the Cornell dam. The strikers made no opposition. About 200 men reported for duty and of this number about 50 were stone masons, while the others were laborers and men who work on the quarry trains. None of the men who reported for duty were strikers and there still remain out between 400 and 500 mostly Italians. Of the 50 stone masons who returned to work 16 were Italians. As the men were assembling at the works separate Companies A and B made a demonstration on the hill. This was done to assure the strikers that the soldiers were ready for any emergency. Corporal James O’Brien of Troy, who was on guard at the Cable anchorage, challenged three men at daylight this morning. They ran away and O’Brien fired at them, but did not find a target. The fire was not returned. Whether the men were strikers is not known. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=132099
