That being said, these are my ideas. Go to or phone the Town of Somers Clerk and ask about Land Records and maps of early property owners. Back in the day when Westchester was rural, local civil maps indicated land tracts with owners names on them. 2nd I know that property had to be registered on the county level. If you find out that the county archives has anything, get back to me and I'll retrieve it for you. She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on December 21st 1872, and lived in Kristiania (Oslo), Norway until 1920. She went to the US and back several times, I have found immigration records February 20 1915, she was now married to my great grandfather. Next immigration March 13. 1920, she is divorced and is staying at 257 Mayflower av. in New Rochelle NY. She is here estimated born in 1880. In the 1920 census she is registered at this same address as a servant. Last immigration record is from September 21, 1923 where she is registered as a nurse and staying with friend Johanne Johnsen of 20 Garden st. New Rochelle, NY. I can not find her in the New York 1925 census. Where did she end up? Maybe she married again and took another surname? I am on Geni and have not found anything. Would be great if someone cound help me further. I do not know US records that well, and am struggling to search for old address books, more censuses, marriage records, cemetary records. Thankful for all help. Best regards, Jorgen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. ...we're now on the cusp of finding out if this will be a storm that'll break records, or if Long Island and Connecticut get the brunt of it, as the latest report forewarn. Meanwhile....many Broadway and Off-Broadway shows that run on Mondays were canceled, as were the NY Knicks and Nets basketball games. Wall Street was running slow, but in the black (phew) as companies scurried to release their suburban employees. Metro North, aka the ole New York Central Railroad, added extra cars to the trains for an early rush hour exodus. Metro airports canceled flights early...that's the big three: LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark. Mayor de Blasio set a curfew for non-urgent vehicles to be off Manhattan streets by 11pm. Major driving routes scooted folks off to keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles. Most schools finished up the day with cancelations for tomorrow, and some for Wednesday, too. NYS Regents exams have been rescheduled for the high school kids. Yup, NY still has those harrowing state exams; we're the Empire State remember. Right now it's pretty and misty white. The winds rumble in the background but don't feel overwhelming yet.... Still homesick? Some of those survivors were mere children...here's more about them today.> http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2926645/Survivors-visit-Auschwitz-day-ahead-70th-anniversary.html Today, as our news sources decline in numbers and quality, and trained, unbiased journalists are replaced by shoddy, sensationalists spewing forth news bleeps that seek poll voters, may we remember to tell the truth to younger generations. 1. [NYWESTCH] Naturalization & Town of West Chester
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. OK boys, play nice. So far it's Brian 4 /others zilcho 1) Naturalizations are federal records. During the large swarms of immigrants arriving, they were processed by courts not usually used for granting citizenship. NARA is the repository for all U.S. Naturalizations., aka National Archives and Records Administration. (Read the fine print in source notes on Ancestry, below and clickable to records.] 2) Naturalization records *do not* include many helpful familial facts the earlier back you go, especially when compared to later Natz records, where such details as who you would live with and their address. To use 1906 as a tabbed year sounds more than reasonable, but I'd pre1885. 3) Naturalization records may be accessible online and copies may repose in county archives, but were never processed is small municipalities. Just didn't happen. 4) Once upon a time, in Westchester County, there existed Towns of [note spellings] West Chester and East Chester...that's how they appeared on old map circa 1858> http://www.old-maps.com/NY/ny_CoWestchester_1858WallMap.htm Today, Eastchester exists bordering Yonkers. "The present Bronx County was contained in the Town of Westchester and parts of the towns of Yonkers, Eastchester, and Pelham. In 1846, a new town, West Farms, was created by division of Westchester; in turn, in 1855, the town of Morrisania was created from West Farms. In 1873, the town of Kingsbridge (roughly corresponding to the modern Bronx neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Riverdale, and Woodlawn) was established within the former borders of Yonkers" (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bronx) Next? In 1868 many fraudulent Naturalization Certificates were issued because the political bosses needed voters. So, a great many "citizens" were never really citizens. They may or may not have known about it. You won't find any of those "Naturalization Records". ;) Brian

    3. > 3) Naturalization records may be accessible online and copies may repose > in county archives, but were never processed is small municipalities. Just > didn't happen. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with that statement as well. This taken the NA's own home page on Naturalization, emphasis mine: "From the first naturalization law passed by Congress in 1790 through much of the 20th century, an alien could become naturalized in ***any court of record***. Thus, most people went to the ***court most convenient to them***, usually a county court. The names and types of courts vary from State to State. ***** The names and types of courts have also varied during different periods of history--but may include the county supreme, circuit, district, equity, chancery, probate, or common pleas court. ***** Most researchers will find that their ancestors became naturalized in one of these courts. A few State supreme courts also naturalized aliens, such as the supreme courts of Indiana, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, New Jersey, and South Dakota. Aliens who lived in large cities sometimes became naturalized in a Federal court, such as a U.S. district court or U.S. circuit court. " Really, they could have happened anywhere. Any "court of record". Def: Court of Record - In common law jurisdictions, a court of record is a trial court in which a court clerk or a court reporter takes down a record of proceedings. Our very small town (different kind of town) court is a court of record, because there is a court clerk. Probably so for the town courts of the Town of Eastchester and Town of Westchester as well. It should be noted that Towns in NY, in case one is unfamiliar are not necessarily what we think of as a "town". The Town of Westchester had several cities inside of it. Towns in NY (or Borough Towns) are what many other locales call a Township. Here's a nice history of the town done over 100 years ago. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/towns/wsthst01.htm Also, for those needing to do research in that extinct town, please read this for research ideas, as the records have been split up between Westchester County and the Bronx (I alluded to this in my original request): http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/towns/westches.htm Also, keep in mind the Eastchester Historical Society. Well, that's enough tilting at Windmills for today. Have a pleasant evening all, and do some genealogy or light history reading! Regards, Brian

Well, be that as it may. It is a necessary step to check several things. While the useful information may be less than what I would like, the point was to get what was available, to make a determination of whether or not this was a related individual or not. > > naturalizations prior to 1906 are kept at county or state level, not at > city or town level. I have yet to find even one at city or town level. Which is why I asked for someone going to the County Archives to look for me, and gave the references needed to find them at the County Archives. But, I guess you missed that part of my request. Thankfully, someone who didn't miss that has taken care of this request. > > That's it. > > There is no Town of Westchester. Here's one from 1881, clearly showing the "Town of Westchester". http://collections.westchestergov.com/cdm/singleitem/collection/1881atlas/id/1 More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bronx As it will tell most if not all of the Town of Westchester is now part of Bronx County. There are numerous sources for this, where you are getting your ideas from is complete mystery to me. > > FYI, these records are on microfilm available through Family History > Centers. 3. There's a problem with your assumptions like many others. Declarations and petitions prior to Oct 1906 does not give more than date of declaration and naturalization, country of birth and will not show anyone else in the family if any. naturalizations prior to 1906 are kept at county or state level, not at city or town level. I have yet to find even one at city or town level. That's it. There is no Town of Westchester. It's City of Westchester from the beginning - and is in Westchester County to this day. 1. [NYWESTCH] IRISH in Westchester
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Dear Friends, In 2014, I completed eight years co-researching a famine era, adult-male, Irish immigrant to Ossining, NY, with the immigrant's descendant. The descendant compiled a book from our findings. My best suggestions from this experience are: l) Keep your minds open to surname spelling alternatives. We found one in 1860 Ossining w/o any vowels. 2) Dig deep: Run every surname from the same era through Ancestry and view other towns nearby where you first located your ancestor. 3) Search for siblings nearby. Seek those with birthdates slightly older and younger. 4) Be willing to thumb through and read every page of a ward in a census to find your Irishman. 5) View every online index for all of your surnames at the Westchester Archives site. May all of your leads be good ones! Barb
