Hi "Dtkone@aol.com," I sent the same article about Joan Clarke to our Dee in Phoenix. Dee responded to that article>>>> "Very political. Makes it sound as if there's going to be so much there. Right now the archives has all their AZ stuff. Pictures that were published showed 2 bookcases (small) for the genealogy things. They're pushing Heritage Quest, Ancestry, family search, etc as the greatest thing since sliced bread when we all know only a small percentage of things have been digitized. This is just bread crumbs.": Dee www.azwvgs.org - West Valley Genealogical Society When a person dies, a library closes. BOTTOM LINE> "If it walks like duck, quacks like a dunk... THE PEOPLE [aka votes] of ARIZONA WERE ROBBED! Let the polls show it. You can also go to the "Digitized Arizona Library" for online research. It looks good to me.

Barb -------------------- "Chairman of Arizona Library Advisory Board Resigns following Genealogy Library's Changes." Dick Eastman · August 9, 2015 · Legal Affairs · 9 Comments Without warning and without enough time for the public to file comments, Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan recently moved the state library’s genealogy collection to a much smaller facility with only two bookshelves, holding a fraction of the books previously available to all. The move brought howls of protests from the genealogy community. (See my earlier articles at http://goo.gl/HChkUO and at http://goo.gl/mdTkwf for details.) The Secretary of State also laid off four employees of the state library at the same time. Genealogists are not the only ones protesting the abrupt and unannounced changes. Author: DavidMyers260 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: Thanks for the input. I have been doing some research over the past several days based on your suggestions and I did find the following records South-Salem Church Membership, 1752 - 1823 http://the-red-thread.net/NY-south-salem-church-index.html This appears to be the Presbyterian church in South Salem that you mentioned. Do you have any idea where that might be located? I have a current map of Westchester County and this community isn't on there. Maybe that's the next thing I need to look for, a map from the 1770-1800 era. That might help my search more than trying to find names of specific churches first. I might have the cart before the horse. The LDS Church has more church records from Westchester County filmed than I had thought. I found the following that I thought might be relevant. Church records, 1741-1894 -- Cortlandtown Dutch Reformed Church (Montrose, New York). Church records, 1761-1873 -- First Presbyterian Church (Yorktown, New York). Church records, 1786-1832 -- Hanover Presbyterian Church (Yorktown, New York). I don't know how close a church would have to be to Bedford and North Castle for a family to use it. Travel was difficult in those days, but, on the other hand, Westchester is a fairly small county in size. Also, the Forman family might have attended a church in Connecticut since that borders the town of North Castle. I have a lot to think about! Carmino Ravosa,*** one of the most popular songwriters for children in the nation and its foremost musical composer on historical subjects over the past five decades, died on July 19th in White Plains, NY. He was 85 years of age. Carmino was born in Springfield, MA in 1930. After serving in the United States Army as a corporal in the U.S. Army Band, he graduated from the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT—where he met his wife of almost 60 years, Claire Colby—and received a master’s degree and an advanced degree from Columbia University. He was a music teacher at the Fox Meadow Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY from 1965 through 1978; he was a Faculty Fellow and the Composer-In-Residence at The Dalton School in New York City from 1978 through 1999; and he was the Composer-In-Residence for Edison Schools Inc. (the largest private manager of charter schools in the nation) in New York City from 1999 to 2003. At both The Dalton School and Edison Schools, Carmino was granted broad latitude and flexibility to creatively use the art and love of music to drive knowledge and learning amongst the students. He was remembered decades later by many of the students that he inspired, many of who went on to admirable musical or entertainment careers and stayed in touch with him over the years. Carmino was a substantial contributing composer and editor for Silver Burdett & Ginn’s popular music textbook series, “The Music Connection” and “World of Music”, and the composer of the theme musicals in the two series that were used extensively in children’s classrooms throughout the nation. He was a songwriter for CBS’s “Captain Kangaroo” and “Romper Room”, PBS’s “Shining Time Station” and PBS’s publication, “Sesame Street Magazine”. At the invitation of President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter, Carmino gave a solo command performance of his musical “Ghosts in the White House” in the East Room of the White House in 1978 for over 600 Halloween guests. He also performed selections from his musicals “Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution” and “From George to George” at the 1989 inauguration of President George H. W. Bush. Carmino again performed his musical “From George to George” at the Smithsonian National Museum during the 2001 inauguration of George W. Bush. He was honored as 2009 Alumnus of the Year by the Hartt School of Music, and was honored in 2013 at the Briarcliff Manor-Scarborough Historical Society. Carmino’s musical “Scarecrow” (based upon Nathanial Hawthorne’s work, “Feathertop”) won four major awards in 1975 at the International Light Opera Festival in Waterford, Ireland, and his musical “Seneca Falls” was performed in 1976 at Carnegie Hall in New York City for the Women’s Hall of Fame (where he served on the initiation board). He also performed at the Gala Reopening Celebration for the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in New York City in 2001 (with Hume Croyn, Art Bushwald and Leslie Uggams). Carmino was a beloved resident of Briarcliff Manor Village, NY, where he served for many years on the Board of Trustees of the Briarcliff Manor-Scarborough Historical Society. He loved the Village and wrote extensively about its rich and significant history. He also performed his musical works at numerous historic landmarks, including the Thomas Paine Museum in New Rochelle, NY (where he served on the board of directors for several years), Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, NY, Washington’s Farewell site at Fraunces Tavern in New York City, Elijah Miller House in White Plains, NY, Washington Irving’s “Sunnyside” home in Irvington, NY, John Adam’s Historic House in Quincy, MA (with Chairperson, David McCullough), the Paul Revere House in Boston, MA, Buchman Tavern in Lexington, MA, and Knapp’s Tavern in Greenwich, CT. He is survived by his loving wife Claire Ravosa, his daughter Carine Ravosa Feist and her husband Arnold, his daughter Gina Ravosa, his son Dean Ravosa and his wife Ann, his eight grandchildren Nathan, Elissa, Michael, Marielle, Erinn, Colby, Parker and Skylar; and his sister Corena Ravosa. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, July 23rd from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home, 418 Bedford Road, Pleasantville, NY. ***A Memorial Service honoring Carmino’s life will be held on Saturday, August 8th at 11am at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 197 Manville Road, Pleasantville, NY.

[1]ancestry This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DavidMyers260 Surnames: FORMAN, UNDERHILL Classification: queries Message Board: [2]Click here Message Board Post: My ancestor, Jacob Forman, lived in the Town of Bedford, Westchester Co., NY when the 1790 census was taken. He apparently had lived in Westchester Co., NY since 1771 because his daughter, Allche (Forman) Underhill, is listed in the 1855 New York State census as being born in Westchester Co., NY. In 1790, Samuel and Allche (Forman) Underhill lived in the Town of North Castle, Westchester Co., NY, which is adjacent to Bedford. This information indicates to me that the Forman family probably lived in Westchester Co., NY for 20-30 years. I am interested in finding baptism records for Jacob's children in the local churches. I suspect that the family was Presbyterian or German Reformed. Forman may originally have been Fuhrman, etc. and Allche is a Dutch forename. Does anyone have any good information about what churches existed in the Towns of Bedford and North Castle, Westchester Co., NY in the 1770-1800 time period? Are any of the records available to the public? Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Dear Friends, This is today's news pertaining to closing Roman Catholic Churches within the Archdiocese of New York. The Archdiocese of NY includes the following counties: New York, Richmond/Staten Island, Bronx, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan. I've deducted there are two types of closures from CBS News: TYPE 1 Parish closures, or "fade outs": Right column churches will only be used on special occasions, and will MERGE with the left column churches that become the main parishes, marked by an asterisk* https://cbsnewyork.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/parish_list_2_final_-_one_church_103114_2.pdf TYPE 2 Parish closures: Borth right and left column churches will continue to have masses and sacraments, but MERGE with left column churches that become the main parishes, marked by an asterisk* https://cbsnewyork.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/parish_list_1_final_-_both_churches_103114_2.pdf In the past, Archdiocesan records were moved from one closed church to its sister/surviving parish. But, I've not read anything about transferring records...yet. Genealogists may want to postpone requesting sacramental records until the dust settles. If anyone has more information, please post on list. Barb
Dear Lillian, I wrote you many years ago about this facility that was technically in Peekskill, NY, within the Town of Cortlandt, about 40 mile N of NYC.. Look in the Rootsweb archives for either this county or NY-Orphanages. My question is I have a distant relative that died in 1969 in Sing Sing Prison. If I am looking for the record of admission or any records at all. What year do I look for 1969 or before that. I do not know anything about his encarsaration at all. His names that were used were: *Jerome Body *Jarred Body *Maurice Hill (Which he changed his name to He was born in texas March of 1903. According to family story he killed a man in Texas on a horse and then changed his name. The family had hid him. 1942 his wife died. kids are raised by his sister. Between 1942 to 1969 the year of his death cannot find anything on him. Is it possible for him to be sent to prison in New York if he commited a crime in Texas or did he have to commit a crime in New York in order to be encarsarated at the Sing Sing Prison? Also If I wanted to look at court records of the courthouse for trial. Since he was at sing sing prison. Do I look at the Westchester Courthouse for those records? Dear Friends, Are you a NYS resident? Then, you entitled to a NYPL library card! Since I no longer commute to the city, I'm really happy to learn this. Visiting researchers may obtain temporary cards. This is excerpted from the New York Public Library's homepage> "Any person who lives, works, attends school or pays property taxes in New York State is eligible to receive a New York Public Library card free of charge...Adult and teen users may either apply online or in person at any New York Public Library location or Library-sponsored event." You can apply online or in person Forms of valid I.D. are here> http://www.nypl.org/help/library-card/terms-conditions#Eligibility I hope this helps you with your research, Barb
Thanks Barb very helpful on the NYS library card and in a few years I hope to be back in my grandma's land of birth still kicking and of course desiring that when they do get around to lowering me into the family burial plot at Rye (Lewis Family Plot) at Greenwood Union that there will be a Louis Armstrong Louisiana style band playing The Muskrat Ramble and everyone remarking on that book VINE RIPENED TOMATOES A TURTLE ON THE SNARE DRUM AND TALL TALES TOLD AT THE BACK FENCE.
