Roll Call is a Rootsweb tradition. When someone calls "Roll Call," list members are invited to post all of the surnames they are researching. Then, readers may email those who share the same surnames. Capeesh? So, post your surnames, then add your e-address below you name, like this. Barb MizScarlettNY

Here are 296 cemeteries listed for Westchester County, NY. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=csr&CScn=&CScntry=4&CSst=36&CScnty=2037 Dairy farming, brick making & aqueduct construction by immigrant Irish & Italians, quarrying, railroad workers, country estates, Quakers, and early Dutch settlers thrived here on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. By 1848 the Hudson River Railroad stretched to Ossining. This later became the NY Central, Hudson line; today it's called Metro North Barb -----Original Message----- From: Donna Vaughn via dkvaughn@nycap.rr.com, St. Augustine's and Sparta are two additional cemeteries in Ossining. Ellen, I contacted Dale Cemetery via it's website a few years ago. They were very helpful and kind. They provided information on my family. When I came to visit, they took me to the site. This is a beautiful cemetery. http://www.dalecemetery.com Cynthia On Mon, Aug 17, 2015 at 11:17 AM, Ellen Brown via <nywestch@rootsweb.com> wrote: > I have 2 relatives born in Westchester lived in Manhattan and on their > death Certificates > said burial was in Sing Sing. > > I'm guessing Dale Cemetery but on find a grave they are not listed. > > Has anyone out there dealt with Dale Cemetery? > > I have both dates of death: 1863 Margaret Heleker (found yesterday !!) > and 1872 Charles Heleker > > Would any other cemetery be considered in Sing Sing ? > > Thank you for your time in advance > > *************************************** > Have you checked out the Westchester County GenWeb site yet? > http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/ > *************************************** > Browse or Search the Mailing List Archives of postings sent to this list > over the years. A hundred years ago, I viewed this Baptist from my office window. It is located within the Village of Ossining. The Town of Ossining is comprised of the Village of Ossining, part of the village of Briarcliff Manor, and a section that remains part of Mount Pleasant. By the end of the US Civil War the train line was completed from NYC to Ossining, which was most likely the receiving depot for non-Catholics buried up here. First Baptist Church in Ossining> http://www.historicfirstbaptist.org/about.html Photo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossining_%28town%29,_New_York#/media/File:First_Baptist_Church_of_Ossining,_NY.jpg Ellen, if you have the NYC death certificates, the burial should be noted on page 2 of the DC. Hope this helps, Barb
At one time Ossining was considered to be within the Town of Mt. Pleasant. Bordering towns are Yorktown, Amawalk, Briarcliff Manor, Chappaqua, and formerly North Tarrytown, now Sleepy Hollow. St. Augustine's Cemetery is sanctified ground for Roman Catholic burials; it was the earliest regional Catholic cemetery. This, from the list footer> http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/cemetery/index.htm Barb -----Original Message----- From: Donna Vaughn via <dkvaughn@nycap.rr.com St. Augustine's and Sparta are two additional cemeteries inOssining.
Sparta Cemetery is very much in existence, at the juncture of Rt 9 aka Highland Avenue and Revolutionary Road. Headstones were made of sandstone, and very few are legible today. Carl Oeschner led his students through this cemetery and taught them how to do gravestone rubbings there. Not all of those originally interred here were removed to Dale Avenue Cemetery. Technically the cemetery is not in Sing Sing, but is located in a section called Scarborough. I lived in Sparta and know this area very well. From: Deanna Smith <dsmith57701@roadrunner.com> Hello Listers, I’m a New York State Professional Researcher so I can’t grasp that New York controls who gets the records. What records is this a reference to? We do have a limitation on Vital Records at the State Level. Birth Certificates are available for a fee from 1880 through 1940. They must be 75 years old to be accessible. Marriage and Death Certificates, 50 years so available this year up to 1965. The keeping of vital records in New York States didn’t start until 1880. There was an effort in 1847 through 1849 and these can be found in many of the NY Counties. As for Library and Archives resources, the records abound in NY State. I feel that it is a “feasting” or records to search. The Dept. of History and Archives in Montgomery Co., New York, for example, has probably the third largest genealogical collection in New York State with over 200 church records; most indexed. At this time, I know of now NY State Library or Archives closing. I am aware of staff cuts everywhere. The one difficulty that the writer could be referring to are Surrogates records. Because I live in NY State I travel to the various Surrogates offices and have no problems procuring records. NY State did pass a law about 5 years ago to charge researchers $90 for the copy of a Will. Astronomical to say the least. They may relate to persons ordering Wills by mail. I’ll check that. How else can I help? Deanna Smith
