Dear Friends, If your family is anything like mine, some of your Irish removed to Scotland, probably for work. Who ever thought that coal mining was an opportunity? My McKENNAs! It's my understanding that Jewish ethnicity comes from the mother. The "Maher" name is probably the Irish side. Thanks for asking about Hart Island, Patricia. Hart Island (in Bronx County NYC) has been an active burial site for those who died impoverished, or without family contacts, since May 1881. It was the 10th known potter's field in NYC. Other such locations were at today's Washington Square, Madison Square, Bellevue Hospital, NYPL, and Ward's and Randall's Islands. Hart Island's public burial ground is referred to as a "Potter's Field." Here, the deceased are buried in graves with non-relatives, and without individual headstones or markers. Please note, Catholic cemeteries in metro NYC did provided similar free burials for such persons, when the loved one's religion was known. Within the Catholic auspices these burials are called "charity burials." If your ancestor died in a Catholic hospital, and you can't confirm a burial cemetery, check a Catholic cemetery. I am positive that Calvary [opened 1850s] and St John's [opened circa 1881] in Queens NYC had charity burials. I've discovered Hart Island burials in five online search engines, and all do not cross reference with each other. 1) NYC MUNICIPAL BURIALS https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2240477 Clue: Enter a surname, then you have to click into each hit. Some are indicated by a Bronx death. 2) IGG...Death search. http://italiangen.org/ Clue: Enter "Death Search." The NYC Municipal Archives has NYC Civil Employees' films, approx 1890 - 1920. Before 1898, city employees are listed in alphabetical order by surname [New York County]. Results of these searches are just one line entries showing: name, job title, and annual salary. In 1898, when five counties joined to form Greater New York City, these Civil Service films became more complicated to search. Searchers *must* know the specific county and department where your ancestor worked. When searching for teachers, police or fire employees, it helps to know their more specific school or district. Films are organized by calendar year, then separated by county within the same film. Results for Greater New York City are very genealogically interesting. From a one name search you will glean: name and home address, job title and location, annual salary, start date and date of retirement. Each film begins with the Department of Education, divided by school name. In the 1898 + section, thousands of city employees are listed at: NYC Board of Education including Evening Schools, City Hospital at Blackwell's, Randall Island, City Home at Blackwell's, Kings County Hospital, Cumberland Street Hospital, court employees, fire by engine and hook and ladder company names, Bellevue and Harlem Hospitals, to name a few. A job title such as "stoker," one who keeps facilities heated, could be difficult to search as every building would have several such employees. Knowing the county and department where your ancestor worked will make your search time manageable. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com
Today I was researching at the NYC Municipal Archives where new cabinets holding filmed indexes to historical records are available that are not on their website. Now, they are now front and center and I'm unsure where they've been hiding. There are two new drawers of microfilms pertinent to Westchester County but, I did not have time to explore them...yet. Each drawer is labeled "Westchester," but I am not sure yet if they refer to the county of Westchester, or the Town of West Chester. [Please note the spelling difference.] In NY State history, Westchester [one word] was a county; later, southern parts of it became parts of Bronx County in NYC. Within this county existed a town called "West Chester" [note two words], as well as a town called East Chester [today this same property is called Eastchester and is in Westchester County, bordering Yonkers.] Files are labeled something like "Westchester Town," and the other "Towns of Westchester." In both cases the "W" names are cojoined. This is intended as a Heads Up. We just may have some other resources in the city, than the county has to offer. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com

The key to tracing your clan back to Poland is to determine their original Polish names, first and last-including maiden names for women. Follow these steps to establish their names! Look for Changes in Spelling The name you know your ancestor by from North American records may or may not be the same one he or she used back home. Like other immigrants, Poles sometimes "translated" their given names to the English equivalents (Jan becomes John; Katarzyna becomes Katherine). Check for Misinterpretations Because Polish orthography is so different from English, immigrants often altered the spelling or pronunciation of surnames to make them look and sound less foreign. The Polish alphabet has 32 letters - 9 vowels and 23 consonants (note that q, v, and x are not normally used). The additional letters with diacriticals (accent marks) were often misinterpreted: It's not uncommon to discover the given name Wadysaw transcribed as Wtadystaw. The surname Zdziebko is might be listed as Fdziebko because the Z was written in the European manner, with a crossbar through the middle. Establish When the Change Occurred These name changes generally occurred after arrival in the United States or Canada, so expect your ancestors to appear in earlier records, including passenger arrival lists, with their Polish names. This is where it helps to understand Polish naming practices. Roman Catholics, for example, would often name a child after a saint whose feast day was celebrated on or near the baby's date of birth or baptism. Books that can help you determine given names in Latin, Polish and German, and find surname spellings, include Polish Surnames: Origins and Meanings by William "Fred" Hoffman and First Names of the Polish Commonwealth: Origins and Meanings by William F. Hoffman and George W. Helon (both from the Polish Genealogical Society of America). Create a List Use this information to create a list of the surnames and first names you're searching, as well as potential alternate spellings and variations to look for in online databases and print indexes. I hope this brings you closer to yourancestors, Barb
