Totally off-topic - but that lowers my opinion of DeBlasio even more. Those carriage are a wonderful attraction for tourists, and according to a cousin "very romantic". They should be preserved. -----Original Message----- From: mizscarlettny via Sent: Thursday, January 21, 2016 3:48 PM To: NY-IRISH@rootsweb.com ; NYNEWYOR@rootsweb.com ; NYNASSAU@rootsweb.com ; nybrooklyn@rootsweb.com ; nywestch@rootsweb.com ; NYQUEENS@rootsweb.com ; nysuffol@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYWESTCH] ACT NOW: NYC IRISH & HORSE CARRIAGE INDUSTRY Upon his swearing in two years ago, Mayor Bill DeBlasio swore to kill the 150 year old NYC tradition of horse drawn carriages in Manhattan NYC. Were there many newspapers published in New York city between 1865 & 1895? My Gr. Grandfather, Lorenzo W. COTHRELL, was an actor/comedian & used the stage name George J. ANDERSON. His wife, my Gr. Grandmother, kept a scrap book of many newspaper articles about his acting career. He travelled across the country with a vaudeville group & evidently appeared in New York city as well. In one NY newspaper he is referred to as "The Bowery's Favorite Comedian". I saw the scrap book just briefly many years ago & I had planned to borrow it & make copies. The scrap book has gone missing & I don't have a subscription to online newspapers but wonder if it would be worth the expense to subscribe to one & try to find that one article. Find My Past and Mocavo will unite this year and memberships will go to the custodial survivor: FMP. This is timely to members. You can usually negotiate for a few free months added to your membership deadline. If you're new to family research, tighten your seat belts. These mergers of genealogy companies, search engines, programs, and software has become characteristic to genealogy on the internet...at least in the profit-making sector. By the time the general public learns of changes, it's usually too late to stop the rolling stone. Our frustration sets in when the purchaser doesn't understand the product as well as we do. Many Irish searchers were lured into at least a trail membership with Find My Past. It offers records from the United Kingdom, which includes Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. It's historical Irish newspapers help put flesh on the bones of our Irish born ancestors, yes, Catholics included. Find My Past has an ongoing business relationship with NYC based New York Genealogical & Biographical Society aka NYG&BS (http://newyorkfamilyhistory.org/). Now, Utah born D. Joshua Taylor, MLS, leaves Find My Past to become president of NYG&BS on February 1st, 2016. It appears Josh paved the thoroughfare between both genealogical entities. NYG&BS traversed multiple cosmetic surgeries in the past decade. Once upon a time "the society" with moonlight in their eyes, owned a four-story building at 122 East 58th Street, replete with members-only research facilities, a private library, and bloodlines of urban aristocrats. [For the curious, its former grandeur and political demise, is in the annals of Rootsweb's NYC-L.] The building? Sold. Books? Reside at NYPL. The last many years NYG&BS sells courses, trips, and historical periodicals. Sounds like retail to me. Following the NYG&BS saga has been a real trip. Perhaps a reinvention to "The Housewives of NYG&BS" will succeed? Or, perhaps Josh Taylor will create a persona for NYG&BS that's culturally inclusive? *NYG&BS http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=New_York_Genealogical_and_Biographical_Society Barb Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com

Dear Friends, The 3rd anniversary of St. Brigid's restoration will honor Irish people at a gathering on Sunday, 31 January, after the 1pm Mass. Ed Torres says the purpose pf the party is to honor the Irish people. http://irishecho.com/2016/01/st-brigids-to-mark-3rd-anniversary/ Many of us recall the "Save St. Brigid's Church" movement. Ed Torres chaired the committee to save this Lower East Side icon which was built by Irish shipwrights as a refuge to surviving Irish immigrants, circa 1848. This was some saga of man versus the machine! The Archdiocese of NY condemned, then closed it. The wrecking ball struck. Miraculously a court injunction halted ultimate destruction. Thanks for phoning Castle Garden about the site being down, Terry. Now, Castle Garden is up and running, Folks! http://castlegarden.org/ For those new to genealogy, this was the central port of immigration in NYC before Ellis Island opened in 1892. As with the Ellis Island people search link, at http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger, both search engines are based upon transcribed records. Use their results as clues before viewing the actual ship manifests online at Ancestry or in person at NYC NARA. I hope this brings you closer to your ancestors. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com -----Original Message----- From: Terry Bora via < I just called them. They were unaware of this issue until I told them. The lady thanked me and said they'll 'reset' the site and it should be up and running later today. Terry -----Original Message----- From: Pat Connors via Thanks all that replied. I now wonder how long it has been down? It is a great site and one that has helped solve a number of my mysteries. Maybe we should just all contribute and they will get it up again. I am just wondering if it is me or the website. I cannot get it to do a search. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com nymets22@gmail.com
