Ellen., Do you have an "Ackerly Seekers" page or something similar?? This "Ackerly thing" (for want of a better term) in my family is a l-o-n-g story and I'm only guessing. However I intend to track down my theory, and your post brought it back to mind. I can email you privately if you want the whole story because it would be off topic for this list. Thanks, Deb. It looks very interesting and informative. I put an icon on my desktop and will explore it more thoroughly later. I'm writing a paper on Colonial History so every new source holds potential. Lynn, May I use the notes on this family from this and your previous message on our web site and would you like me to add your name and E-mail address (I can put it in as "Lrcrowder at aol . com" if you like) as a Fowler Seeker? Cliff, I believe it all shakes out in the wash--we make more money here by NYC, but we have to when houses start at half a million dollars, and the cost of everythinbg else is higher too, including archival fees. Generally speaking we all end up with about the same buying power. I also want to thank you for the wonderful work you have done on the Columbia County cemeteries. Thanks to you, I found out that a 3G grandfather others had assumed was dead had in fact moved across the border from Mass to Kinderhook, remarried, and had 2 more children. The remarriage preceded the divorce by a couple of years. I first found the gravestone for the 2nd wife from your lists. Subsequently I found the resting places of 3Gs mother and sister. My current query: 3G ended up in the "county farm." Do you know where I could find the poorhouse records regarding admissions, deaths, and burials? He was still at the farm in the 1860 census. As an aside, his oldest son had done very well in life. 3Gs mother resided with him in the lap of luxery, and is buried in a lovely family plot in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. 3G and 2nd wife were no longer together at the time of the 1850 census--the returns show just the wife and 2 children. Mathew has yet to be located for that year. For those intersted in colonial history, I would like to recommend a listserv run by the CT. State historian, Walter Woodward..called Colonial Ct..(which includes Southold, LI and Westchester, etc). It's a forum intended to bring together freelance and academic historians and genealogists and has been very active over the last few weeks. A variety of topics have been discussed...historical questions have been asked.....events have been announced.(sorry for the passive voice use) Such topics as funding for small libraries, schoolhouses in colonial days, migration paths, new websites for research use, the validity of websites for research use....and many more.....are explored.....the list is run through the Univ. of Michigan. Just type in Univ. of.Mich listserv in google and up it comes....select the list you want to see..... Deb Hanna --------------------------------- Any questions? Get answers on any topic at Yahoo! Thank you, Lynn for getting back to me. The name is on a 1784 survey of property for grantees at Remsheg (Wallace), NS. It will be interesting to see if there are any others who can shed some light on this. I've found reference to the marriage of Solomon Flowler and Sarah Hunt and a list of children, some who seem to have died in American after the Revolution. I wonder if Sarah and the children went back. Ellen Lrcrowder@aol.com wrote: Hi, I am afraid that Solomon Fowler was killed in Horseneck in 1780 and his wife Sarah Hunt and her family went to petition the British for compensation and never received anything that I could find. Hi Joan, I wonder if you would be so kind as to look in your Genealogical and Family History of Southern New York for the parents of Margaret TELLER, born 1765 in Teller's Point (now Croton) and died 1836. She was married to John Forster b.1764, d.1848. They had three children, Mary, Isaac and Eliza. Margaret and her husband John are both buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Pleasantville, N.Y. I believe Margaret is a direct descendant of Anneka Jans, but I need to know who her parents were to document this. Thank you so much! Jean
Gabriel, I work in a research institution (not in NY) and want to suggest that most of your $30 was probably a standard fee for one hour or less of pulling books and making copies. I know my institution charges $15 or $20 for in-state people (tax payers) and more for out of state. It is just a base fee no matter if it takes ten minutes or 60 for finding the book, pulling it, going to the photocopy machine, copying, reshelving the book, taking the pages to the mailing area, etc. For most people they are doing more than you requested, but the first hr fee is just set. I assume you mean the New York State Library in Albany. Remember that NY is a very populated state with more people migrating through than average. They get thousands of requests every year. I assume you read their web pages and they were not clear about the fee. That is unfortunate, but really you are not getting cheated. Maybe it's best to email about the fee before sending in a request. Elizabeth Knowlton >I just received some papers from the New York Library . I am still hyperventilating ! They charged me $30.00 for some copies . When they said they would bill me I had no idea they would charge so much for just copying out of specified books & --> NOT doing research work . I am guessing maybe 20 paper copies of cemetery records that I wanted . I usually ask what the charge is for everything BEFORE I buy anything but I thought they would be like most other libraries . Which is usually .10 cents a page for specified pages . I have had some state archives e-mail me copys of things if I site a specific book & page number or they type it out . Are you all rich in New York ? lol gabriel in Missouri :)<
Thomas born abt 1718 & Jemima WARD children ; Elizabeth Moses Dont know anything about these - Just tht they lived in Westchester County Elizabeth married GILBERT TOMPKINS thanks Joan
