As far as I know, Bedford,NY, was part of Stamford and New Canaan in the early days--part of what was called the "elbow"---even over to Katonah(Chief Katonah sold Ridgefield to the early settlers -a Norwalk company). New Canaan was a colony of Norwalk as was Ridgefield. What I am saying is that there was confusion for a long time! Friend-- Bedford NY is right on the CT/NY State border. Consider looking in Stamford CT or New Canaan CT. George

Maureen, and List, Can anyone tell me about the Brandreth factory that was in Ossining? I have seen mention of it in articles and have some related working there in the 1920's and 30's I believe. I see that Brandreth is also a family name in Ossining. Also, I ran into a web site for the Shattemucyc Yacht Club in Ossining that has a history tab and lists past members of the club. Lot of familiar names from the area. www.shattemucyc.org/ Charles

I am looking for information on Nathan Crissey. He is listed on the 1810 census in Bedford, Westchester, NY. It shows 2 males under 10, 1 male 26 to 45 and 1 female 26 to 45. It is my understanding the Crissey family came from Connecticut. I found a Nathaniel Crissey listed on the 1800 census in Stamford, Fairfield, CT. It shows 1 male under 10, 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45. I know I am way out on a limb with this but I have an Alexander Crissey born 1812. Now as I understand it there was a traditional naming pattern, first son named after mother's father and second son named after father's father. Alexander's first two sons were Alva and Nathaniel. Nathaniel seems to fit and Alexander married Elizabeth in Dutchess County. On checking Dutchess County there is only 1 Alva, Alva Trobridge. Which would also seem to fit with Alexander's oldest son. Please, I would appreciate someone proving I am right or grasping a straws. Please reply here or directly to mbacon3@cfl.rr.com Marty

Cliff thanks for the information on middle names. My PGF was known as Charles, but on on census is identified as John. According to Albany County records when he married his father is listed as P.P. Have never been able to find a P.P. with a son Charles. Have found a P.P. in Brooklyn 1880s with John for a son. will have to go back and look at that again.
The Palatine system of giving all boys Johan as a first name and using Maria or Elisabetha for girls was relatively easy to figure out. These switches are much harder. Another thing they did to toally confuse me is use Jr., Sr., etc. very differently from our system. Jr. was not necessarily the son or Sr.--could be a nephew or something. When Sr. died, Jr. would become Sr. Or as in my craziest middle name ancestor--Richard Crignon Chapel--he usually went by Richard C. or Richard Crignon. One of his sons from his first marriage was named Richard, but doesn't appear to have been called Jr. Richard Crignon adopted the use of Jr., however, after his father died. All this took a lot of time studying deed records to figure out. Fortunatley Richard Crignon bought and sold a lot of land and recorded his deeds so I could eventually get it. I still have no idea, as someone put it, "who or what is a Crignon?" Tom66F@aol.com wrote: Cliff thanks for the information on middle names. For those familiar with the Civil War officer Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain from Maine, I have read that his original name was Lawrence Joshua...but that through his own usage of "Joshua" as the given name, it was eventually changed to the form in which we now know it. I'm not sure it was ever changed "officially"...but he went by Joshua Lawrence as his own personal preference. My grandfather was given the name Charles Tracey Shelley -- but I do not know of a single person who ever used the name "Charles" in reference to him. And from what I have gleaned from family lore, even his own parents referred to him as "Tracey." Brian Shelley

Hi Cliff, Very interesting explanation. We recently had a long conversation on middle names on another list--I believe it was the H-Connecticut one. I started that thread by inquiring if anyone had any idea from wence came the "Crignon" in Richard Crignon Chapel, one of my 4G grandfathers. The discussion centered around the reason for middle names--such as the doctor who delivered the child, a famous personage, etc. Before that I had assumed that the middle name was a family name. Barbara Cliff Lamere <clifflamere@nycap.rr.com> wrote: I have transcribed a great number of census families for a book I'm writing. Gradually, I became more and more aware that the people in the census often did not use their given name, but rather were going by their middle name instead. Today, I found a child Minerva listed only as H.M. in an earlier census. It appears that she was using her middle name later. It is not unusual to find a child listed with one name, but on the next census the child has a different name. The ages and the order of the children can be used to assure youself that they are both the same child. I remember a man who was listed with given and middle name. His son had the two names reversed. After the son left the household, the son took the same name that his father had. And the father then either reversed the order of the two names or just used the earlier middle name (I don't recall which). Sometimes the men were listed with just a single name. The situation was complex, but I finally figured it out. These two men may actually have had identical given and middle names, but I will probably never know. A woman might be listed as Mary A., then later as Anne Marie or just Ann (or even Hannah). Sometimes the middle initial of a married woman is actually the first initial of her maiden name. One has to be aware of that. Therefore, a woman might be found as Adaline C. Smith one time, but Adaline A. Smith another time. Both may be correct if you knew the maiden name. Informants on a death certificate may not know all of the information for which they are asked. This is especially true of second spouses. For example, by the time of the second marriage the parents of their husband or wife may be deceased. They didn't meet them and in conversation may never have heard the mother's maiden name, or the places of birth. When it comes to a name, the name the informant had heard may have been the person's middle name. Or, we may have only found records of the the person using their middle name, whereas the informant gave their true given name for the certificate. Hi Cliff, My father always used his middle name rather than his first.... and when my brother...named after Dad....was of legal age he changed his middle name legally to his first name. Both given names were family names and both were unusual to some extent. When I sent for Dad's WWI draft card I saw that he had used his first and middle names correctly.....and when I gave info for his death certificate I did the same. I have no idea what my brother's (at the time) girlfriend put on his because she and our family were not close (and that's being charitable LOL). Middle names----ah, yes---the bane of the genealogist. It appears to have been the fashion some years ago to name, at least the males, a perfectly good name, such as my husband, James, and middle name him the name he was to be known as, in our case, Lawrence. He had brothers Clarence Glen, known as Glen; Charles Moreland, known as Moreland; and Earl Dean, known, for some odd reason as Earl. Guess the fashion died out. Then there was the endearing fashion of the Irish naming their daughter Bridget, while in Ireland, and then calling her Delia once she reached these shores. You also have to learn all the nicknames for common given names, such as Maggie for Margaret, Mamie for Mary, (also Polly, Molly, etc.) and Dolly for Dorothy, Patsy for Martha, And all the forms of Jane---Jennie, Jean, Joan. Siobhan, Janet ad infinitum. Don't ever forget all the forms of Elizabeth. Remember Jacque is not a French form of John, but of Jacob, which translates as James. They often also doggedly used one name over and over if the child given that name died until they got one who lived with that name. I think I would have gotten superstitious eventually. OR the Germans, at least in the Pfalz area during a certain time period, named every son the same first name, such as Johann and given a different second name such as Franz. This child was known as Franz from then on. They were usually, at this particular time, were given the name of the Saint upon whose day they were born. Me, I was born named Marilynn with 2 n "s" on the end, still giving me no end of trouble but as a child I was "Tootie" and didn't know the difference until I started school. Yes, names are what makes genealogy tracing fun, exasperating, and VERY educational!
