    1. Re: [NYWESTCH] Divorce papers 1892 - 1900
    2. Cliff Lamere
    3. Nancy, Call a county clerk's office and you will probably be told that divorce papers are sealed forever in New York State. However, I have always thought that there must be some early period when they would now be open to the public. I just phoned Rensselaer Co. in upstate NY. Their divorce documents begin about 1930. The lady didn't know where earlier ones would be filed. I then phoned the Westchester county clerk's office twice. I learned that their divorce records go back to 1906. Earlier ones would be archived, but not at their office, and wherever they are they would be open to genealogists. I would try the Westchester County Archives first. 3. Yes, In Part 2 of the book I will be covering my personal ancestors because that part will be Genealogy. Part 1 will be mostly History with just a few names of people as they pertain to the Rev War.....for instance the 3 local farmhands who helped capture Major Andre...... and probably some coverage of Major Aaron Ward, my 4th greaat uncle, because he is so famous.....that kind of personal coverage. 3. Hi Elizabeth, You probably have my old email addy. I switched to broadband and my new addy is now quillpen1@optonline.net My father was born and raised in the Mt Pleasant section of Ossining .....called Sing Sing when he was born. The first settlement was called Sparta......as you probably know....and yes, I'm addressing that in the book. To answer your question about an inn: I have not come across that particular inn that you speak of.....not yet, anyway. Thanks, Maureen. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Knowlton" <knowltonew@earthlink.net> To: <nywestch@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2007 10:13 PM Subject: [NYWESTCH] Ossining, Mt Pleasant, etc > Maureen, > > I tried to contact you off list and was unsuccessful. > > Perhaps you have answered these questions: it appears that Ossining (Sing > Sing) was previously Mt. 1. [NYWESTCH] Divorce papers 1892 - 1900
    2. Nancy Davis
    3. Hello all. Has anyone pursued "divorce papers" from somewhere around 1892 - 1900. This could be a date of filing to the whole file; I really don't care other than to confirm or deny there was a divorce or petition for a divorce. I'm guessing - if true - the filing would have been in Westchester Cty, Bronx Cty, NYC or Brooklyn. If you know where (or if) these records are retained and how to access them, I will be most appreciative. Thanks much, Nancy

    2. Elizabeth Knowlton
    3. Maureen, I tried to contact you off list and was unsuccessful. Perhaps you have answered these questions: it appears that Ossining (Sing Sing) was previously Mt. Pleasant. So when people state in a 1900 family history that ancestors were born in Ossining, can one assume they may have been from Mt. Pleasant (ca 1800). I ask because I have spent a difficult time tracing a Nathaniel Holmes who was NOT born of the Holmeses of Bedford and not the Nathaniel living there and sometimes called Sr. Mine came from Massachusetts during the war and married Ann/Anna Brady of the Westchester/Dutchess/NYC Bradys. Then the two reared their family in Mt. Pleasant for several decades before relocating the what we now call NYC. I believe I have located the family on Mt Pleasant censuses. Just the other day I read in an 1803 SPECTATOR that such and such a meeting would be held in the home of Nathaniel Holmes, innkeeper, Mt Pleasant, Westchester Co., and am sure it is my NH. I wondered if you had come across any references to an inn in that locality. Answer only if you have the time and inclination. I have not been successful in getting any information from the Ossining Historical Society. I know it is chintzy to make this request after asking for help, but can we ALL remember when we reply to the list to delete most of the old messages that repeat in our new message? When you have digest mode, you have to wade through acres of <<<<<<<<<<<<<<to get to new messages. Thanks, Elizabeth W. Knowlton

    3. George I found a Nathan in 1810 Bedford NY and in 1800 a Nathaniel in Stamford CT. There are two problems. In 1800 He and his wife are 45+ and in 1810 they are 26 to 45. In 1800 one son under 10 and 1810 two sons under 10 but not one over 10. The parents age could have simply been a column error. In the case of the sons either the one from 1800 died and they had 2 more or the one from 1800 was an infant or new born and was still under 10 in 1810. What I am really after is connecting Alexander born 1812 and then Nathaniel to his father in 1790 and/or 1800. 1. Re: [NYWESTCH] Sing Sing
    2. There will be some specific names as they relate to the topic. I'm not sure yet exactly which ancestors' names will be mentioned. Maureen, Please keep the list in mind when you get done, a list of surnames would be VERY helpful to those of us who collect books on Westchester Co, NY , I for one will order a copy of it covers any of my ancestors. Thanks for all of the hard work. (Side note my Grandfather's (Fred Hirsch, NCPD) murderer "Two Gun Crowley" was electrocuted at Sing Sing in 1932.) Thanks, Carol L. Heap FL
