Does anyone have any information about the ancestry of Rachel UNDERHILL who married John OUTHOUSE? Thanks. Juanita
Marg, FYI some of the NY UNDERHILLs were Loyalist and arrived in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1780s. Several received land grants, some of their Christian names include: Thomas; Nathaniel; Barto; James; Hannah; John, etc. I have found oddles of UNDERHILL info by doing a quick n dirty search of the New Brunswick Archives. http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/Default.aspx?L=EN This is the BEST on-line resource in North America!!!!! These for the most part are government records. You will find registered vital statistics (birth, marriage & death); pensions for Revolutionary soldiers/widows; land grants/petitions; 1800 newspaper vital stats info; and marriage bonds. Info contains dates/registration #s; etc. I am also sending you under separate cover a much longer message containing some of the info that I found on UNDERHILLS. Hello, Can any one help with this? I am transcribing burial records and then locating them on some very old cemetery maps for a catholic cemetery in Rye Brook ,NY as it turns out, this one is on the map, but I can not find the actual burial record in the registers. My questions are Is this a polish name? and is their an English translation? I have found with other burial records that the burial register , is in English but he headstone inscription is in the another language. There is also a date which is very faint, it looks like 17, Lulleoo? 1921 Polonia many thanks for your help. Eileen --------------------------------- Bored stiff? Loosen up... The Old Dutch Church burying ground, and Sleepy Hollow Cemetary
You might try calling the Tarrytown Historical Society.
The book "A History of the Town of Lewisboro", 2nd Edition, copyright 1994, by South Salem Library Association, South Salem, New York, lists 15 cemetaries within the town with about 14 pages of names and locations of persons buried in those cemetaries.

Would have to search back books to fine it. ASK.com has more than below. http://www.upenn.edu/gazette/0506/obits.html 1929 | Gladys I. Tantaquidgeon CCT'29, Uncasville, Conn., a medicine woman of the Mohegan tribe and its oldest living member; Nov. 1. Gladys Tantaquidgeon wrote four books, including Folk Medicine of the Delaware and Related Algonkian Indians (1942, last reprinted in 1995). SEE ALSO http://indians.org/ >
Perhaps someone researching in Westchester County, NY can provide some help to get my research back on track. Background: I am researching Jotham WRIGHT, a Lieutenant in the Continental Army. He was supposedly born in Rye, NY, ca. 1751. His home was "about 12 miles from Peekskill, near WestPoint." After the war he lived in New York City, where he and his wife, Elizabeth Dusenbury, had their six children baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of New York City. He is found in NYC in the 1800 census. A mortuary notice in The Observer, of 10 February 1811, indicates he was buried between 26 Jan and 2 Feb 1811, age 59. A genealogy of the Wright family of Oyster Bay, L.I., by Perrine, states: "[He is] said to have died at Tarrytown, N.Y." My Question: Is there a conveniently available list of cemeteries around the Tarrytown area, that existed as far back as 1811, and whose records are available somewhere, in some form, accessible to researchers? Of course this assumes he was buried near where he died and not hauled back to NYC or some other place. Any help appreciated. Dick Randt Ellicott City, MD
Friends, Does anyone have any ideas about a tribe of Indians in Westchester County called "Cognewaugh Indians?" Family lore has it that somewhere back there, we had some Cognewaugh Indian blood in our Hoyt backgrouind. I've been unable to find any positive information about this. So----any ideas, clues, or information would be helpful. George Hoyt
George, Wikipedia has this on the early history of White Plains: [edit] Early history At the time of the Dutch settlement of Manhattan in the early 17th Century, the region had been used as farmland by the Weckquaeskeck tribe, members of the Mohican nation and was called "Quarropas".,[1] To early traders it was known as "the White Plains", either from the groves of white balsam which are said to have covered it,[1] or from the heavy mist that local tradition suggests hovered over the swamplands near the Bronx River.[2] The first non-native settlement came in November, 1683, when a party of Connecticut Puritans moved westward from an earlier settlement in Rye and bought about 4,400 acres, presumably from the Weckquaeskeck. However, one John Richbell of Mamaroneck NY claimed to have earlier title to much of the territory, he also having purchased a far larger plot extending 20 miles inland, perhaps from a different tribe. The matter wasn't settled until 1721, when a Royal Patent for White Plains was granted by King George II. And the Westchester.gov page says; The Indians of Westchester were members of the Algonkian tribes. They were generally more peace loving than the fierce Iroquois, who lived in northern New York. They lived on the bounty of their land. They hunted and fished, and grew crops of corn, beans, and pumpkins. Following the seasons, they spent the summers on the shores of the Long Island Sound and Hudson River, and moved to inland homesites during the colder months. They gathered oysters and other shellfish in summer to be smoked and dried to add to their winter food supply. I'm sure that each of the major tribes in the area had smaller branches with different names, and I did find mention of a Conewaugh Press, but nothing further. I also have some lineage from the Algonkian, but haven't been able to track it down. Sorry. Pat
Hi You mention in your Email that a R.Cowles recorded the inscriptions in the Reynolds Cemetery. Are they published anywhere ? Do you realize that if Polly was born in 1780 and married in 1790 she was only 10 years old???? Thanks, Carol L. Heap FL
Thank you, Carol. Since the brith date of 1780 is calculated from cemetery records, I will not change that. I don't know how I came up with 1790 for the marriage date. Based on the birth dates of the eldest 2 sons (based on census records 1810-1860), the marriage of Elijah and Polly (Lyon) Pinckney should say bef. 1800. This would make a lot more sense. Thanks again Sandy ----- Original Message ----- From: <cheap@simon.com> To: <nywestch@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 12, 2007 7:54 AM Subject: Re: [NYWESTCH] Elijah PINCKNEY Descendants > Do you realize that if Polly was born in 1780 and married in 1790 she was > only 10 years old???? > > Thanks, > Carol L. Sorry no James or Judith Reynolds in the list. Of course this doesn't mean they aren't there. It just that there may not have been a tombstone to read. Sandee

I also want to say thank you for posting the Patent google search! I found a cousin of my ggg-grandfather, with patents for a Perpetual Calendar, Music Stand, Chimney Protector, Dyers Fork, Canvas Stretcher, Blackboard Rubber (looked like a simple eraser to me!), and a Pencil Holder. I was so surprised to find anything, and I love the new picture it adds to my impressions of them. I also was not able to print them from the google page, so I right clicked and did Image Copy on each page of the patent, and pasted them into a Word document, so I could save all the pages in one document.
