Hello, I am researching Caleb Pell 1708-1769 Pelham Manor, Westchester Co NY. He also had a son named Caleb Pell. I have a relative named Sarah born 1770 NY, who married William Brower (Brouwer) born March 14, 1766 Wappinger's Falls, Dutchess Co NY. No marriage record found, however, they named a son Caleb Pell Brower born 1798 NY. In the will of William Brower, he states his sons are to follow up on an inheritance of some type in Westchester Co NY. William's father provided for him, and was not connected to Westchester Co NY, so this must mean Sarah, his wife was connected to Westchester Co NY. Is anyone researching the Pell family? Is there a Sarah Pell, who would be a grand daughter of Caleb Pell? Best regards, Lilly Martin

I have just updated the New Rochelle and the Yonkers Surname Registries on my website: http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/NewRochelle/surnames.htm http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/yonkers/ If you submitted a name, please check your entry for accuracy. If I have made a mistake or your data has changed, please email me using directions at the bottom of the surname registry page and I will make the corrections with my next update of the site. Please note the email address in the directions (nymets11@pacbell.net) is the one I use for the many surname registries I have on my website. If you send them to this gmail address, they will not be used since I use this one just for Rootsweb Mailing Lists. Also, if you have changed your email address, remember to let me know so I can change it when I do my next update (2-4 times a year). I cannot tell you enough times about how I get emails from possible connections looking for a new email address for one that no longer works. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com nymets22@gmail.com

Here's a print of the original St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Ossining, New York. http://images.tuckdb.org/postcards/images/000/002/856/mid/2010_08_05_13_31_15.jpg It stood adjacent to the present day Cablevision building on North Highland Avenue. The newer church borders Ossining and Croton to the north. St. Augustine's parish had the second largest Irish-Catholic community in Northern Westchester County, to the now defunct St. Patrick's Church in Verplanck, NY. Verplanck, just south of the City of Peekskill, attracted Irish immigrants to work its riverfront brickyards, as did Buchanan, Montrose, and Crugers. Croton NY attracted predominantly Italians and Irish who built the Croton Dam and infrastructure of NYC's water supply, including the Croton Aqueduct. As the New York Central Railroad crept northward from Ossining, immigrant labor was essential here too circa 1860. Barb MizScarlettNy@aol.com

Voter registration is very much a genealogical issue. When today's eligible voters have *not* voted recently: l) Some counties are removing their names from their "active" rosters, so these citizens will be unable to vote in upcoming NY elections, including federal primaries next week and the presidential election of November 2016. (2) This valuable resource will diminish in importance as voter registration is on the decline. Lots of complaints in metro NYC that New York's deadline for voter registration is too early; it was last October. Think about it: Why should the cut-off date be different state to state? Isn't six months overtly cautious in this computer age? Interestingly, today's news reports that two of Trump's voting-age children aren't registered Republicans, so...can't vote for Pops next week. If the families of politicos are out of the loop, just imagine everyday NYers. They provide more than a party affiliation, or street address, via Ancestry. What Acnestry offers is merely an index to a pithy goldmine. If you've not researched at your county board of election archives, don't knock it until you've tried it. HOW TO SEARCH In NYS, records are on file at the county level. Just as with the 1890 NYC Police Census, you begin with a street address, not a name. The larger the city, the more important it is to know the Assembly District (AD) and Election District (ED). These are some of the fancy numbers atop census pages. Most searchers pay more attention to the other ED, the Enumeration District. The MANHATTAN BOARD OF ELECTIONS is still located at 200 Varick Street. Once upon a time NYC NARA was located at 201 Varick, so a trip to one, meant a trip to the other. My APG branch met at their warehouse at 448 W 16th St. and I had to the chance to search its huge, handwritten ledgers 1916-1920 (gaps) and 1923-1956 for numerous ancestors. Remember: These records may supplement naturalization searches, since only citizens could vote. Information includes each voter's name, street address, date they last voted, names of all adults registered at the same address, DOB, party of preference, previous voting address, and voting status. So, when you vote, you'll be leaving a trail, just like Handel and Gretel leaving bread bits, for future generations. Seeking more information on the following relationship, Fountain Sherwood, born ca 1835 Peekskill, son of James & Sarah (Owens) Sherwood. Fountain married ca 1860, Lucinda Raynor, born ca 1839, possibly Peekskill. They had 2 children, Emeline and Odell (male) both born early 1860's. Trying to get more details on Lucinda.
Many Ancestry.com index pages have a feature over to the right that says "View Printer Friendly." When you click on it, the essential information is formatted into a neat list. It's a handy communication tool. You can copy and paste the results into a post on list, when asking for help, and you can print it as a reminder to yourself of where you stopped researching. And I thought Primary voting was April 19 ----- a Tuesday. Never knew a primary date to be on a Sunday...
New Yorkers statewide are complaining about the state's archaic, deadlines for voter registration. They say that the Empire State has registration cut off dates much earlier than other states. Some NYC voters are finding that their names are missing from registered voters lists and contacting their county boards. Since the upcoming Presidential primary is April 17th, this is the time to check your voter status. Here is a list of all NY State Boards of Elections, by county. http://www.elections.ny.gov/CountyBoards.html Recently I found an interactive city-wide map of voting results from the last presidential primary. I was shocked to see that the Upper East Side of Manhattan had the largest number of voters = 24%. The majority of sections has single digit figures. FYI Only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote on these primaries. Barb MizScarlettNY@aol.com

Thanks Barb, I appreciate the kind words, I spent Tuesday at a new gathering of writers hoping to get published some day. One of my most precious memories is my 1967 - 1969 assignment to Vietnam. The book that I am writing deals with how I became the man that I am as a Boomer of boomer parents. I was in country when my lover another gay soldier and I were reminiscing on July 4 of that year Stonewall and the queer riots of 28 June. We wondered what our country would be like when we got back. The book is titled "Vine Ripened Tomatoes Turtle on a snare drum. Written in first person conversations that attempts to paint an honest picture of life as we knew it. Daniel PS when and if you have a chance I need to figure out how to identify my grandma's best friend who lived on Manhattan Island in NYC in 1976 - 1977 the year was when the city was planning to close Radio City. If I can get my mom to turn over grandnana's address book I might find it there but I am being shunned till I agree to go back in the closet. I never knew what a closet was but mom sure knows and thinks that as loud as she screams "YOU DAMNED SINNER" protects her about as well as Kim Davis in Kentucky is doing these days. She is Roman you know. I have photos that I took for a day we spent together and she told me things that I never suspected of my maternal grandnana's family. So in a nutshell, Ancestry did indeed have a hardware failure, and this wasn't some nefarious plot on Ancestry's part to do in the Rootsweb community. And the lesson here is that fearmongering, assuming the worst intentions of Ancestry based on nothing, and hating on Ancestry just because it is Ancestry all turned out to be egg on the faces of those people spreading the FUD. There are certainly reasons to be pissed at Ancestry, from time to time, and for things they've done in the past. This wasn't one of them, and I am personally glad I didn't jump on some bandwagon vilifying Ancestry.
Today, From Dick Eastman>>>>> Ancestry Concedes Defeat as It is Unable to Restore All of the RootsWeb Site Ancestry has been trying for weeks to fix a data loss in its RootsWeb/USGenWeb/WorldConnect web pages. The company has been able to repair many of the lost pages but not all. In fact, the company is asking customers to upload any pages they may have available. The company also promised, “Going forward, we are adding additional technical resources to support the site and ensure such an issue does not occur again.” Ancestry sent the following announcement to many of its customers today: As you may know, the RootsWeb site was recently unavailable as the result of a hardware failure in our datacenter. Our development and web operations teams worked diligently and carefully to address the issues, and as a result, the site is now available again. Regretfully, despite their best efforts, our teams were not able to retrieve all of the data associated with the site. Specifically, we were unable to retrieve content from FreePages added after the summer of 2015. We understand these pages are important to you and are very sorry that we are not able to recover the data that was lost as a result of the hardware failure. Going forward, we are adding additional technical resources to support the site and ensure such an issue does not occur again. If you have a backup of your own please upload it to the site so that you have the most current version of your pages. If you have any concerns, please contact our Member Services through our support form. The RootsWeb Team Comments?
