    1. [NYWESTCH] Bartow UNDERHILL
    2. Marg Smith
    3. Supplimenting my UNDERHILL family email: I found that Bartow seemed to have the least amount of information on my suggested ancestral line, and he is possibly also confused with his son Bartow as well. The information I have found online includes: Bartow Sr 1) (son of Nathaniel UNDERHILL and Mary HUNT) was born 23 October 1725 in Westchester County NY Is this information from the Underhill Genealogy volumes, or another source? Some sources have Nathaniel married Mary HONEYWELL, however I think they have confused Nathaniel and his son Nathaniel. Mary UNDERHILL is mentioned in the will of Grace HUNT (nee FOWLER) widow of John HUNT. Source: "Wills of Early Residents of Westchester County., N.Y., 1664-1784" by William S. Pelletreau A.M 2) Bartow died before 26 March 1786 in Cortland Manor, Westchester County, NY, Would anyone have any suggestions or sources for this date please? His place of death seems to have some confusion as well. Another record has: "Bartow was born October 23 Anno 1725; went to Pictou, Prince Edward's Island. He died before Jan. 5, 1787." This is a part of the record " ...taken from the original record in the family Bible of Nathaniel Underhill, the page being presented to the Underhill Society...." Did this record include the Pictou, PEI in the Underhill Genealogy volumes?? Or was it added later? Or did the researcher confuse Bartow with his son Bartow (who went to Canada??) 3) No records seem to be available for Bartow's marruage to Sarah (Unknown)?? 4) A source says Bartow was a farmer of Cortlandt Manor, Westchester, NY in the area known as Yorktown. I have contacted the various sources via their webpages, but "they got their info from another..." or "its the only info I have.." or no replies, but the information (such as the above) must have originated from somewhere?? 5) During the French-Indian Wars, Bartow was an Ensign in a Militia Company in the North Battalion of Westchester and on the eve of the Revolution was a Captain of the same unit. Now there must be sources available for this information?? Would anyone have any suggestions for sources which would include (and expand on) the above information please? Would there be any NARA records for the above for Bartow? Reference Numbers for NARA records? and my last bit of information I have found online: 6) In April 1775, Bartow was among the Westchester Tories who met at White Plains to protest and pledged their loyalty to the King And again..... what could be the source of this information please? Would anyone have any suggestions for sources which would include (and expand on) the above information please? Would there be any NARA records for the above for Bartow? Reference Numbers for NARA records? Any little bit will be greatly appreciated! Many thanks Marg Smith Mardi, NSW Australia

    2. Dear Debbie, Yes I am familiar. Will look further. But I am still working on the ones that remained in Weastchester. I lost my third grt grandfather at the battle of White Plains and have nine members in the DAR. Where there Loyalty lies is still a question. I think they were on both sides. Garrison I believe was Patriot but wifes family not, Fowler same. Many denied ither. I guess afraid. I believe Underhill comes in is from Brown and Fowler. But they had land IN PHILLIPBURG,an adventure for us Want to say thank you again Pat

    3. Hullo everyone This is my first posting to the list. A few years back I was researching the SYPHERS/ SYFFERS/ CYPHERS family, mainly in Orange County, but never got around to looking at the female lines of my SYPHERs connections: GGGGGG Grandparents: Lea BUYS married Johannis SYFFER GGGGG Grandparents: Agie (Effie) MABIE m. Petrus SYFFER GGGG Grandparents: Tamar UNDERHILL m. Peter SYPHERS I started looking and WOW! What a feast of information is out there. I have put together what I assume is my UNDERHILL line, and would love any corrections, and any advice on finding primary sources to support my findings. Hugh UNDERHILL m. ?? Thomas UNDERHILL m. Magdalen AMYAS John UNDERHILL m. Honor PAWLEY John UNDERHILL m. Elizabeth FEAKE Nathaniel UNDERHILL m. Mary FERRIS Nathaniel UNDERHILL m. Mary HUNT Bartow UNDERHILL m. Sarah (Unknown??) Tamar UNDERHILL m Peter SYPHERS Henry Lamberston SYPHERS m. Eliza HUNT John Woodruff SYPHERS m. Mary Ann REAL John Woodruff SYPHERS sailed from New York as a crew member, and after England and India, arrived and jumped ship in Sydney, Australia in 1848 - explaing how this message is coming from Australia!! I have emailed three different contacts listed on the Underhill Society webpage, and completed the online lineage chart, however I have had no replies to my enquiries. Is this an active society? I have the Death Certificate of John Woodruff SYPHERS, stating his parents were Henry Lamberston SYPHERS and Eliza HUNT. I visited the record keeper for the Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem, Orange County, NYS, and photographed Henry and Eliza's marriage record dated 9 January 1823. (Henry is indexed as TYFFERT, however looking at the writing of the other entries it is SIFFERTH) Eliza died 2 June 1835 and is buried in the Vails Gate Cemetery (adjoins the Methodist Church at New Winsor). with her baby son William Henry SYPHERS who died 26 September 1835. Henry's second wife was Abigail DAVIS. I have found the demise of Henry through Abigail's pension papers, and have connected Henry to his parents Tamar UNDERHILL and Peter SYPHERS through "THE FAMILY OF JOHANNIS SYFFER OF PHILIPSE MANOR" by Francis Jacques SYPHER Jr ( Reprinted from: The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol 103, January 1972) but from there, my information is from online sources. I will do a separate enquiry for Bartow UNDERHILL, otherwise we will have a long email. Can anyone access the Underhill Genealogy volumes to check my lineage above please?? And any thoughts, suggestions, assistance, connections or sources would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Marg Smith Mardi, NSW Australia

    3. Pat, I'm assuming that you are aware that the UNDERHILLS, FOWLERS, ODELLS were in some cases NY Loyalists and are all familiar names in New Brunswick, Canada? Info can be found on-line at NB Archives. As I recall, there is the ODELL home restored at Kings Landing NB, a Loyalist historical village. I once had some drawings re ODELL family and gave them to someone in the US with a family connection. 2. Cliff Lamere
    3. The New Brunswick Provincial Archives looks like a great site. Just a note of caution. I made only one search. I used the Vital Statistics Search Engine. I searched for births, marriages and deaths all at once, and I used the Soundex option. I was struck by the fact that there were exactly 200 hits in each category. Each category was arranged alphabetically. After looking at all three carefully, I believe that the search engine finds all hits (could be 300 or more), alphabetizes them, then displays the first 200 in ten groups of 20 each. When the hits are over the maximum, the resulting webpages do have a note that says, "Your search has returned the maximum number of records allowed, more records may be available, you may wish to refine your search criteria and try again." I only report this because someone might see a list of births that ended too soon and think that it was the real end of the hits (if they didn't read the note above). If the surname you seek is alphabetically beyond the the 200th hit, you won't be able to find it using the Soundex search. In that case, try several exact spellings. Cliff C. 3. There were many OUTHOUSE Loyalists, Debby. In fact quite a few of the Outhouses in the US .....mostly West and Midwest from what I've observed.....go to OUTHOUSE familly reunions at Tiverton, NS. That is not my branch so of course I don't attend. My Outhouses stayed in the US after the Rev War although I have no idea as yet whether any of them fought in it. I DO know however that they lived in Westchester and some of them are my ancestors. I have documented that my maternal grnadmother was born n Quebec. All this has nothing to do with the Rev War or Loyalists grants.
