Marianne, Which Millers?? I have Westchester Millers in my direct line. Also too, I see you live in Wingdale. Are you related to Pat Boughton, married Walter Frazier?? Both are graduates of Arlington High. He was Class of 1952 and she was 1954 . HI! When we first moved out to the 'boonies' of Hunterdon County from Atlantic City, NJ, we weren't here one month when we had a whopper of a snowstorm (1965), and our gas stove 'saved us'. We lit the top burners with a match, cooked and got heat from them for 2 days. Played Monopoly and other board games. Kept our sanity by reading in the daylight and playing games at night.( with the help of candles!) We'd rented an old farmhouse with a huge kitchen so we essentially lived in that kitchen The kids had made friends with the girls down the road so they had company. No problem, Jean. Actually I prefer NYS to Florida and elsewhere......ice ,snow and all. At least we don't get hurricanes, tornados or earthquakes......nor the really bad snowstorms and 40 below weather of the Midwest, nor that horribly damp foggy and smoggy weather either like some states, nor the stifling hot weather of states like Arizona. ....and we get 4 seasons too. Hi to all Westchester friends. We are looking for a lady named Mary Emma Smith Townsend Collins. She was b. May 1818 in Westchester Co and d. at 105 in Hamburg, Eirie Co NY. The story of her life goes something like this: When she was 3 months old her father was killed in an accident we think. at least he died. Her mother died shorttly after that, we don't know if that means 2 months or 2 years, and she was adopted by the Townsend family. Which one we don't know. As of reflection of her early life she was interviewed at stated that she rode the first steam passenger train for a distance of 7 miles from the metropolis of NY. (Does that mean NYC) She related that the train often stopped and they got out and picked berries. ( I am a assuming that she was about 18 and unmarried) By 1844 she had s son, John, in Utica, NY and by 1846 she was married to Paticrick Collins and living in Wyoming County, NY near Java Center. They were catholic and the baptisms in St. Patrick's church shows that she was referred to as Mary Smythe as the mother and Patrick Collins as the father for the children who were baptised. We cannot find this family in 1850 on the Wyoming Co census, but on the 1860 census the family is listed as John, Thomas, Francis, Michael. Other children later were Elizabeth, Ellen, Andrew. It is said she had 13 children but no proof of that, and Patrick Collins was born in Ireland about 1808 and was a stone mason, but after 1860 he bought farm land and later moved to Wethersfield where they farmed. HIs son, Thomas, spent most all of his life in Bliss, married twice and is buried with the first wife. Does anyone have a clue as to what records would be available to show the school records of the children and where to find them, or other articles that might refer to a family in this area? Are thre Civil War records for Wyoming County that would list the names of the soldiers from Wethersfield? We need to desparately determine if the name used on the baptism record is the maiden name of Mary Emma Townsend or an earlier married name. If her name were Smith and she were born in Westchesster Co in 1818, what records might refer to the death of her father or the settlement of his estate? Would there be adoption or orphan records in the court for a townsend family who adopted Mary and would there be court records accounting for her welfare on an annual basis until she reached age 18? We really need to find out what her maiden name was. If anyone knows, please contact us with this email. Her children married into the following families. Elizabeth m.l Judson Rodgers, Ellen m. Streamer, Thomas, m. a Kelly, Andrew m. Lana Streamer, Francis m. Kelly. We hope you can help. Valerie in California. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Hi Maureen, If you don't mind answering, where in Dutchess did you live, what was your maiden name, and did you ever show at the Rhinebeck fair? I grew up on a farm in Columbia County and found the 5 days without electric amusing, as did you too , obviously. It was a way of life. The best was when my father decided to get a gas stove so at least we could eat when the electric was out--only to discover it had an electric starter. My grandparents and then my uncle had a large Guernsey farm in Salt Point. My uncle, Louis Fish, Jr., was very involved with the fair. We had Jerseys but always showed in Dutchess rather than Columbia as Dutchess had better facilities for 4-H kids (my grandmother Ivy Fish ran the dorms), my cousins were there, and my mother had grown up showing there. Chatham Fair was rinky-dink. Barbara Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Still looking (after 20 years of work) for wives of several Knowlton men in Bedford,Westchester county, in the 18th century. I collected all the census records long ago off microfilm. I have checked all the Bedford records that remain after the town was burned during the Revolution. Basically, what I need is for people to keep alert in their 18th (not 19th) century genealogies for women who married Knowltons (also spelled Nolton and variations). I do not need ancestry searches, which I have done. There is Ephraim (ca 1676-ca 1735) who married Katherine Griffin in Westchester town before they moved up to Bedford. He may have a second wife. There is his son, Robert (ca 1710-1897) whose wife (wives?) is unknown. There is a John, perhaps a brother, wife unknown. There is a Thomas (1720-ca. 1800) who may be Robert's brother or John's son, first wife unknown; second wife Ann Clugston. Then there is Robert's son Ephraim (ca 1745-1784) whose wife when he died was named Charity (surname unknown), but he also may have had a first wife who died between 1769 and 1775. My data is on rootsweb's worldconnect, which I highly recommend. Elizabeth in sunny high 60s Atlanta with the first tulip opening today

I grew up on a dairy farm way out in the boonies of Dutchess County. Things like that happened all the time.....of course that was after we got electric power and running water in the first place. LOL. Dad had 92 head and had to milk them all by hand when we had power outages. He was used to it from the days when there was no electric power in the barns but it was no fun, believe me!! Dick, I saw your message and tried your blog address, but couldn't get it -- "This page not found". I'm really interested in any old books about Westchester Co. Perhaps I should try later!
