    1. [NYWESTCH] birth before 1900 (Maureen)
    2. Jean Ann Lupinetti
    3. Maureen, I know when I was looking for birth and death certificates (several years ago) I had to check with BOTH the Town of Ossining AND the Village of Ossining. I grew up on Croton Dam Road, Ossining. I went to Ossining schools and the address was Ossining but I actually lived in the Town of New Castle. However when I tried to get Dad's who was born in 1889 in Ossining, it could not be found. I wasn't charged but I was disappointed. I also want to point out that at the time of Dad's birth the family lived on Croton Dam Rd which to my knowledge was Town of Ossining although Dad always referred to where he grew up as Mt Pleasant. All comments appreciated. 2. Cliff Lamere
    3. School districts in the state were required to collect vital records starting in 1847. The law was not in effect very long. I know some districts collected the records until 1851, but for other districts the records that still exist stop in 1848 or 1849. Many city, village and town clerks do not know about these records. During the Great Depression in this country, the locations of old records in each county around New York State were recorded. Some counties still had the 1847 vital records. For the city of Albany, the City Clerk had them. Today, however, that office does not know where they are. In localities where those records still exist, I suspect that they have been turned over to a local historical society or archive. Or, they may be stored somplace where people seldom look. Some have been put on the internet. For Westchester County: http://www.westchestergov.com/wcarchives/vital_records.htm "Town clerk returns for births, marriages and deaths for 1847 have recently been discovered. They are currently being processed and will be available to the public in early 2005." 3. Shannon, It is very possible that the births were never recorded. Many more births were by midwife than by doctors at that time, and some doctors were poor at reporting. New York City births were not reported to Albany. They had their own system. The hospital births you mentioned might have been reported, but I have never heard of a direct link between hospitals and the state for the sake of reporting. Such reporting is doubtful. The percentage of births in hospitals at that time would have been very low. Your ancestors may not have been born in the place of baptism. A paid researcher in Albany could check the NYS Dept of Health Death Index on microfiche at the NYS Archives for you. It would tell where they were born, and when. The researcher could also order the birth certificates for you. If you wish to do that, I can put you in touch with someone. I sent requests to the Clerk's Office there and was told they only have information on people who were born at home not in hospitals. (I don't know whether or not these ancestors were born in a hospital). I even checked with the Town of Greenburgh, Village of Dobbs Ferry, but no luck. I have the baptismal records for these ancestors, but was hoping to gain some insight into their parents from the birth records. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could research further? Were births in New York also sent to Albany for recordation? Is it possible that these births were never recorded? Thank you for any help you can give me! I am collecting information about the Gardenier surname (of about 50 different spellings) from anywhere in New York State. So far, I have found about a dozen certificates of interest to me on the Italian site. The help is much appreciated. 3. June, Thank you so much for writing such detailed instructions. I am collecting information about the Gardenier surname (of about 50 different spellings) from anywhere in New York State. 3. Dear Connie, I just sent out a "How To", to Cliff, answering your question I think too. It's a form I got from on line, but you fill it out in paper form & mail out with a check to the FHC - in Utah. I received my certificates within 2 weeks, in a large envelope - with another form to use next time. Junie :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please share how you ordered the certificates from LDS. Was it an online form or a paper form? Thanks. Connie

    3. Dear Cliff, I think it was me who wrote in about ordering 8 marriage certificates and yes they are real (copies) of the marriage certificate. This is what I did, first have to get the certificate number. I found them on http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm and http://www.germangenealogygroup.com/otherdb.stm and http://www.stevemorse.org/ In their VITAL records section. You copy all the information you find (names, date, where it took place & certificate number). Then you go to the LDS site http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp This is the section I used as my family all were in NY http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localityhitlist&columns=*%2C0%2C0&PLACE=New+York&PARTOF=New+York&prePLACE=New+York&prePARTOF=New+York Go to the borough that you are interested in & look under vital records - NOT - indexes. Click on marriage certificates or death certificates & etc. Click on upper right hand corner - View Film Notes. Scroll & check for your date & where your certificate number you got from the sites above, fits in & then it's the FHL number on the far right that you have to use to send out to the FHC on that "Request for Photocopies" form. For $2.00 you can't miss - it's worth taking the chance to see if they are yours or not. Out of the 8 I sent for - 4 were my family - 1, I put in the wrong certificate number in - 3 I don't think are mine, but waiting to find more proof. I wish you good luck, Cliff. If I could help you more just ask (like I did to others, as I was scared not knowing "how" to do it - but with the list help, it turned out easy). June :-)
